#24 - "Ancient Relics!" Part 2

[cover]
Cover: Lee Sullivan

Cover Date: 15/08/87

Script: Simon Furman
Pencils: Geoff Senior
Inks: Dave Harwood
Letters: Annie Halfacree
Colours: Steve White

Later Reprinted In: Action Force Monthly #3 [UK].

Synopsis: Action Force run back up to the surface, where they bump into Grimlock and Centurion. Megatron then appears, and he and Grimlock battle. Meanwhile, Flint sends in the Dragonflies, but Megatron shoots Wild Bill down.

Notes: Megatron explicitly mentions the Spacebridge from #108.

Errors: Centurion will behave oddly throughout the crossover - there's no mention of Professor Morris at any point, and he just generally acts like a sentient robot, someone reinforced by the conventional face. Wow, Wheeljack's repair jobs must be good... What exactly happened to the other archaeologists isn't explained.

Transformers featured [in rough order of appearance]: Megatron [clone], Blades [flashback], Grimlock.

Notable Others: Action Force members Flint, Scarlett, Bazooka, Airtight, Barbecue and Wild Bill, plus Centurion.

Review: A fine continuation. More of Geoff Senior's great dynamic art - the size of the Transformers is really emphasised here. The short length means that economy is used in the narrative, and as a result the story is snappy. Again, despite upholding his antihuman attitude, Grimlock remains much more likeable than in the US stories - although he is still arrogant enough to take on Megatron by himself...

#25 - "Ancient Relics!" Part 3

[cover]
Cover: Jeff Anderson
Cover Date: 22/08/87

Script: Simon Furman
Pencils: Geoff Senior
Inks: Dave Harwood
Letters: Annie Halfacree
Colours: Steve White

Later Reprinted In: Action Force Monthly #4 [UK].

Synopsis: Blades gets back to the surface, just in time to save Wild Bill. Flint doesn't realise his friend escaped, though, and in his anger orders Mauler tanks to attack Megatron, little realising they can't do any damage to the Decepticon.

Transformers featured [in rough order of appearance]: Blades, Megatron [clone], Grimlock.

Notable Others: Action Force members Flint, Scarlett, Bazooka [flashback], Airtight [flashback], Barbecue [flashback], Wild Bill and Heavy Metal, plus Centurion.

Review: Another nice, snappy story. Blades' opening narration is terrific, and this story gives him much more character than he gets in any other canon TF story I know of... More fantastic Senior art, including the much-loved semi-profile frames.

#26 - "Ancient Relics!" Part 4

[cover]
Cover: Jeff Anderson
Cover Date: 29/08/87

Script: Simon Furman
Pencils: Geoff Senior
Inks: Dave Harwood
Letters: Annie Halfacree
Colours: Steve White

Later Reprinted In: Action Force Monthly #5 [UK].

Synopsis: Megatron has defeated Grimlock, and now tears the Action Force armour apart. Grimlock rallies for another charge, taking Megatron into a gas dump. Flint realises this, and calls an air-strike in on his position.

Transformers featured [in rough order of appearance]: Megatron [clone], Grimlock, Blades.

Notable Others: Action Force members Flint, Scarlett, Wild Bill and Dusty, plus Centurion.

Review: The format of this issue is glorious, with Megatron, Flint, Centurion, Grimlock and Wild Bill all getting a page with their own perspective on events. Flint is a very dynamic character at this point, and it's a shame he took a back seat to flashier new members in later issues of Action Force/GIJoe. He makes a tough decision on the last page, which sets up the conclusion nicely.

#27 - "Ancient Relics!" Part 5

[cover]
Cover: Jeff Anderson
Cover Date: 05/09/87

Script: Simon Furman
Pencils: Geoff Senior
Inks: Dave Harwood
Letters: Annie Halfacree
Colours: Steve White

Later Reprinted In: Action Force Monthly #6 [UK].

Synopsis: Centurion intervenes, allowing Blades to get Grimlock clear. The air-strike then takes out Megatron and Centurion, who fall into the Thames. Blades and Flint salute Centurion's actions.

Transformers featured [in rough order of appearance]: Megatron [clone], Grimlock, Blades.

Notable Others: Action Force members Flint, Scarlett and Wild Bill, plus Centurion.

Review: An excellent conclusion to an enjoyable crossover. This is infinitely better than the US GIJoe versus The Transformers series, Image's disappointment in six parts, and isn't far off Dreamwave's superb series. The cast is small, which allows for great character development [only Scarlett is really neglected], and Senior's art is splendid to the end. It's a shame [if an unavoidable one] that subsequent US stories show Grimlock reverting to squishie-hating. As a whole, the story presents a remarkable balance, and the realistic use of Action Force and their abilities deserves considerable praise.
