Warcry

It started with a dream. A dream of peace and unity, of a community that both Autobots and Decepticons could call home. Protihex had been a beacon of hope on a shattered world, occupied by those who, after retaking their home from the Quintesson invaders, no longer wanted to fight. They laid down their weapons, lived amongst their former enemies, and built a new society. But an unprovoked attack by Quintesson terrorists changed all that.

Now it is a shattered dream, strewn with dead bodies and occupied, however politely by Autobot soldiers. Autobot and Decepticon, once friends and neighbours, are dividing along racial lines. Tensions are on the rise between Fortress Maximus' Autobots, Perceptor's Autobot-centric civilian government and Shockwave's group of former Decepticons. With no relief in sight and both capitals busy with their own affairs, the residents of Protihex need to solve their problems on their own...or be consumed by them.

Fortress Maximus moved through the city, slowly walking down the street and taking in the external condition of each and every building. None of them were particularly pristine, but at least a handful seemed to be in good enough shape that they could be converted into a more permanent hospital for Ratchet and the other medics.

As he walked, his subconscious kept a watch on the datastream coming from Cog, who he had left behind to interface with the medic.

“Admittedly, I'm a sorry excuse of an envoy, but I’ll do my best to offer my own appraisal of this situation,” Groove kindly replied as he continued to walk along side Shockwave. “So, do pardon my audacity, but do you truly intend to relocate all former Decepticons to a different sector?”

Groove mindfully considered Shockwave’s plans within the appropriate context. "Well, I suppose I understand the need to expand within this region. If Protihex is to thrive, it can not do so through a singular mind or intention. That would defeat its noble purpose, reducing it to a state not much different from the rest of Cybertron. Protihex is, or should be, a unity of diverging ideas. But still I wonder, Shockwave, why segregation?”

After Wheelie described Tap Out’s condition, Ratchet retrieved a single cartridge of CNM’s (nanomachines) from its small container, sliding it into its corresponding syringe-gun.

He placed the plunger nozzle to Tap Out’s upper arm, squeezed its trigger, injecting the microscopic machines into his patient’s systems.

“That should help a little,” Ratchet said reassuringly. "Tell me more," he looked to Wheelie. "Do you know if he was exposed to anything?

----

As Ratchet looked over Tap Out, Aero Blade had returned from fabricating more parts for Ratchet.

“Thank you Aero Blade. Over there will be fine,” Ratchet nudged his head over to his work station.

----

Cog soon arrived in place of Fortress Maximus, presumably to go over the plans of a new medical facility with Ratchet, as well as offer a hand.

“Well, I didn’t know one of Maximus’ components was handy with the laser scalpel,” Ratchet smiled in return. “So, about this proposal to design a new facility here. What do you have in mind?”

He then held up his hand to pause the conversation, looking behind him at Aero Blade. “Aero Blade? You mind offering some input?” he said, then turned back to face Cog. “You don't mind if he be part of this conference, do you? His skills might come in handy.”

"I don't mind at all," Cog told Ratchet, half his attention on the doctor and the rest of it focused on sorting out the data that was streaming into him from Fortress Maximus. "I believe my larger counterpart is hoping to establish a medical facility that is on par with the IMR headquarters in Iacon, albeit on a much smaller scale. As well as you've done here, you're working with little more than an emergency field setup and a few willing helping hands. Most of the patients you've seen so far wouldn't have even required your attention, if you'd had a few CR chambers and repair drones on-hand. Most of what we'd need could be pulled out of the Steelhaven's long-term stasis ward."

Cog paused for a few seconds, a faraway look on his face as he pondered more data flowing in from Fort Max. "Ah, of course," he said to himself. "Maximus also suggests that a more secure medical facility would be beneficial in the long run. A well-constructed and properly-secured medical facility will offer the city's wounded far more protection than the hotel, which is also the seat for at least part of the government. It is, to say the least, a fairly obvious target for anyone who might want to finish what the Quintessons started."

Shockwave examined Groove's words and found them suitably diplomatic. A diplomatic reply was, therefore, required.

"It is my intention to call upon all ex-Decepticons to consider the several options for peaceful co-existence here in Protihex," he said. "It is, however, more logical to separate old enemies in order to broker an amicable council set-up. I am sure you understand, with reference to prior experience, that the two factions can work together, but there will be certain... tensions." He paused in mid-step, turned his monocular to look down to the other unit. "Of course, it is highly probable that some individuals may simply choose to leave."

They were near the old cocktail bar now, where a waitress was doling out an energon cube to Mirage with sour disapproval at, apparently, being unable to add something from the large collection of stirrers and metallic salts by her elbow.

Meanwhile, Wheelie waited for a moment to answer Ratchet's question. He could see the medic was terribly busy and felt he was unable to just break into the on-going conversation. Instead, he took a moment to watch the Tri-dee screen Quick Mix was still fiddling with as a newsbot was reviewing some events from the Iacon underground transit.

Aero Blade came over to join the conversation when Ratchet beconed, for the moment listening in while Cog explained the situation. From the moment the meantion was made of it being a medical center, Aero almost recoiled due to his phobias, but it faded away has he forced himself to think of it from a construction standpoint instead of the ultimate purpose it would serve. The tech nodded every so often at a key points when Cog spoke, but it seemed that he was off in his own world for the moment, likely already processing some potential designs for the facility.

Perceptor remained silent, pondering bluestreaks' question, although he already knew the answer. He had always been a terrible liar and had found that the best means of keeping a secret was to keep his mouth shut. At last, as he fired up the repulsors on the cargo sled and turned out of the garage into the dank, starlit streets of Cyclohex, he broke the silence as he turned to bluestreak, sitting beside him in the open cab of the sled.

The hatch of sublevel access tunnel 7-b swung open noiselessly and two hulking forms stepped from the darkness of the subterranian levels into the cold light of silver and blue. Both paused momentarily, as if summing up courage for the task ahead. Perhaps an echo of what the two sharkticons had once been, before their lobotomy in the lonely recesses of Kalis. Perhaps a silent goodbye of resolve that only the suicidal could comprehend. Climax. All that is left is to face death as a warrior. With a twin roar of defiance they charged.

Finding a place at the bar, Groove signaled the waiter over to him. He was about to turn to Shockwave to ask what he'd be having, but before he was able to utter a single word, two Sharktcon's stomped through the lobby, chairs and tables thrown about along their path.

Ratchet nodded to Cog's proposal. "Something permanent? Well, I know I can pull some strings back at the institute (The IMR) to help get such a project up and moving. But we still might need outside assistance to help fund-"

Ratchet gasped midway when two Sharktcons, one wrapped in explosives, came charging into the make-shift sickbay. When one of them shouted, the Quintessa's intentions became all too clear to the war medic.

"Primus no! The patients!" he cried.

In a normal situation, Cog would have been frozen in place for a few moments, waiting for instructions from Fortress Maximus. This was, however, no normal situation. In fact, it was as far from normal as one could get. Seeing the two Sharkticons bearing down on them, the drone acted on his basic programming, interposing himself between the attackers and Ratchet's patients. The drone's self-preservation subroutines told him to open fire with his shoulder-mounted cannons, but the offensive maneuver was overridden when he realized just how many other mechs he might hit in the process.

As the Sharkticon shouted and reached for the detonator, Cog uploaded what he expected would be his last sitrep to Fortress Maximus. Then he prepared to die.

Without hesitation, Wheelie hurled himself at Tap Out and pushed the ill mech to the ground. It was a dramatic gesture, but little else - Wheelie had no weapons.

Across the huge lobby, Mirage started quickly forwards, activating his invisibility shield. If he could get closer to the charging Sharkticon, he might be able to get to the explosives...

Shockwave, towering over Groove, stared at the Sharkticon. Automatically, his logic circuits appraised the situation and provided nine alternative courses of action, each with a varying degree of probable success. Under what was normal circumstances for him, he would have taken the response from the top of the list and executed it instantly; as it was, he was frozen with horror that to do so would condemn many in the lobby to death.

He remembered the look of agony as the shock wracked her body. He remembered the Guard the big Taupe Seeker and the pliers the viscious rust stained pliers with which he was gong to crush Glyphs digits the digits she used for her delicate work.

Bluestreak pondered Perceptor's words, not quite sure what to make of them.

"I can't say I disagree entirely," he said eventually. "But you know...even if the 'Cons became totally peaceful, if everything that came out of their mouths was all sweetness and light, I'd still see the purple badge on their chest and want to burn holes in them. They destroyed my home and killed everyone I cared about, and I'm not going to forgive them just because they're not trying to shoot me anymore. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way. So if they don't want to fight, if they're serious about making this a place of peace, then the best thing we can do is stay away from each other."

He sighed. "The thing of it is, though, that the 'Cons might not be trying to deny their nature. If they're up to something, then we need to stick close and watch 'em. And I know they're up to no good. I mean, hell, Shockwave's got his own private combiner team following him around now. And I'm just talking for myself here, but I can't see Bruticus spending his time rescuing petrorabbits and helping old femmes cross the street, can you?"

Having been in the middle of working out the calculations for the plans, the commotion casued by the Sharkticons busting startled Aero Blade, leaving the tech in a confused and shocked state, trying to figure out just what was going on. It was when he caught sight of the detonator that everything fell into place...

Aero Blade's first thoughts went to the idea of defusing the bombs carried by one of the insane mechanisms, but to his dismay he realized he'd never be able to get close enough to do it... then Mirage made his own move, grappling the Sharkticon and going for his weapon. In the same moment Aero made his own decision to act, rushing to the opposite side kamekazi sharkticon as Mirage, attempting to neutralize the explosives.

Unprepared for the commotion that had descended on the medical area, Cog found himself knocked to the ground by Aero Blade as the technician charged past him, toward the second Sharkticon attacker. The drone's reflexes weren't quite up to the same par as a real Transformer, though, so it took him a few seconds to decide to split up into Gasket and Grommet, then charge the enemy behind Aero.

Onslaught stood alongside Shockwave, not quite sure what to do. Like his fellow Decepticon, his initial instinct was to convert to his alternate mode and blast the two Sharkticons to scrap, but likewise like Shockwave he dismissed that plan instantly because of the collateral damage it might cause. Instead, he drew his stun rifle and took a few steps forward, putting himself between the larger Decepticon and the potential assassins.

"Stay back," he advised any other Decepticons in the area. "The Autobots seem to be taking the brunt of the attack for now. Drawing undue attention to ourselves would be unwise."

Outside

After having his wounds tended to, Swindle had quietly wandered away from the rest of the group and headed out of the hotel. Although he usually revelled in the sort of desperation so many of the Protihexians in the hotel were exuding, at the moment he had no use for them. After all, desperation was only a good thing when you were in a position to take advantage of it, and right now Swindle was at a loss for ways to exploit them.

The shifty Combaticon had spent the better part of the last hour driving the streets seemingly at random. But what seemed like mindless roving was, in fact, a carefully crafted facade he put forward for the outside world while he was busy trying to get in touch with some of his old contacts. Most of them hadn't returned his calls, which really came as no surprise. He figured that most of them had been liquidated during the Quintesson occupation, and quite a few of the more...patriotic Decepticons on his contact list still hadn't forgiven him for deserting from Gigatron's forces during the Chaos Matrix debacle.

However, there had been one very promising message waiting for him when he'd checked his account the last time.

Shank said his boss and their crew will be coming here. With any luck I can wrangle some work outta them...

The thought of getting a gig with the Space Mafia made the Decepticon criminal very happy indeed. They had only been a minor player in Cybertron's underworld before the occupation, but since the planet had been liberated they had become unquestionably the largest gang on the planet. Their offworld connections would only make it easier to get his hands on rare and valuable artifacts to sell.

Swindle was so busy counting his as-yet-unseen profits that he almost plowed straight into Fortress Maximus. The massive Autobot was standing in the middle of the street, seemingly busy scanning the local derelict buildings.

"Ah! Sorry about that, Maxie," he said. "I didn't see you there."

"You might want to get your optics adjusted, then," Fort Max told him, an odd tone in his voice. "I'm told that I'm actually rather large."

Swindle decided he didn't like the way the Autobot was looking at him, not one bit. "Well, it was nice to, uh, almost run into you, Maxie, but I really have to be-"

"Actually, could you help me out for a breem or two?" Maximus gestured toward the nearby building. "I'm scanning these for structural integrity for a project I'm embarking on, but it's taking quite a while. An extra set of optics would help out quite a bit."

"Well, like you said, Maxie, my optics aren't all that great," Swindle tried to control the nervousness in his voice, but couldn't quite do it. "And, you know, I've got some stuff of my own to do. And plus, you know, Shockwave would probably slag me if he knew I was helping out an Autobot, let alone the city's big boss 'Bot."

"I won't tell anyone if you don't," Fort Max said, his tone growing odder still.

"Well, uh..." Swindle found himself out of excuses. "Well, if you insist-"

"I insist," Maximus said flatly. "Come on. This won't take long at all."

As Swindle reluctantly followed the large Autobot, he decided that he really needed to stop wandering alone in places like this.

The hunting laser, carefully calibrated despite the situation, punched a neat hole into the Sharkticon's cranium and wreaked havoc in its processors; it jerked violently, no longer able to control its limbs until protocols rerouted. Mirage did not intend to give it the time it needed, quickly repositioning his rifle and putting several shots into its body, hoping to hit something even more vital.

From the corner of his optic, he spotted Aero Blade moving forwards. "Give me a hand, friend!" he called. "Slagging thing's hard to kill!"

Shockwave placed a huge hand on Onslaught's shoulder. "So, you have seen the wisdom of my decision," he rumbled quietly.

Shockwave considered what Onslaught had blatantly implied - to make the whole of Protihex a Decepticon stronghold was the logically ideal outcome. However, they would only be setting up a state in opposition to Gigatron and he was not sure that would have long-term survival prospects. Besides, he had believed he had stumbled upon a bolthole and was prepared to embrace the cause of the Neutral for his own serveral purposes.

As he watched Mirage and Aero Blade attacking the Sharkticon, he could practically sense Groove watching him. Maybe Onslaught should have been more careful...

"Of course,of course.Be right on that."Gusher replied, detatching, transforming and hopping out of the way in a practised manner. The trailer appeared from subspace holding, and latched to Pipeline. He unlatched it,another annoyed sigh coming from him as he transformed, and the trailer became thier minor and temporery workbase.Pulling his holoboard out from his chest cavity,he went over blueprints and schematics.

"You gonna stand here all day,or we gonna do something boss?"Gusher quipped."Like maybe meet whoever's in charge here, and tell 'em we made it?"

"Of course."Gusher led the way with his particular walk,in which he tried to take up as much space as he could. It was annoyingly funny. He was too small to make anyone think he was a threat.Pipeline merely sauntered after, burying himself into his work.

(O.O.C. I don't know how much can be pulled in and out of subspace,so the trailer wouldn't be too much would it?)

Onslaught picked up on Shockwave's reluctance to respond to his words and wasn't surprised by them. Whereas Onslaught and his men had worn both Decepticon and Autobot insignia in their time, the large purple logician had until very recently been among the most devoted (if not to say devout) Decepticons. Had those same words come from Shockwave Onslaught would have found them alarming, but the Combaticon leader spoke as someone with significant first-hand knowledge of both factions.

Autobots such as Perceptor or the closely-proximate Groove made excellent scientists and peacemakers, but Protihex was under siege from the outside. Neither research nor diplomacy would save them. If their community was going to survive, they needed a warrior to protect and guide them -- even if the common citizens of Protihex had sworn off of war.

Swindle slowly made his way into the building that Fortress Maximus had indicated, his nervousness clearly evident on his face as the massive Autobot's Headmaster component followed behind. Every few seconds, the Combaticon's fingers spasmed of their own accord and tried to make their way toward his gyro blaster. He managed to resist the urge, but only just -- the knowledge that Cerebros was behind him and would probably shoot him in the back if he drew his gun was all that kept him from acting.

"This place is pretty much a junk heap," Swindle told the Autobot. "It'll take us weeks just to clear out the debris, and I don't know anyone in the city who'll pay for it. Maybe we wanna move on to the next building?"

"Don't be hasty," Cerebros replied icily. "We need to finish our sweep before we leave, just in case there's something useful in here. Keep going."

Swindle's fingers spasmed again at the tone in the Autobot's voice, but he had little choice but to keep moving.

While Cerebros had gone inside a nearby building with the Combaticon, the main part of Fortress Maximus remained parked on the street outside the hotel in repair bay mode. He saw the two Micromasters arrive on the scene and pointed a scanner in their direction. He quickly identified them as Pipeline and Gusher.

"Ah," he said. "You two must be the engineers I asked for." If he'd been in robot mode, the evaluative look he was shooting them would have been blazingly obvious. "I don't mean to be rude, but surely Magnus sent more than just the two of you? I've been sending him requisitions for a full Corps of Engineers team for the last month."

(OOC: If Prime can subspace his trailer, I'm sure they can too. :))

Bluestreak shook his head. "I don't think so, Perceptor. People who've never had to make that choice tend to get all moralistic and go on and on about how they'd rather die than do something, but in my experience, self-preservation tends to trump morals. I mean, hell, if you'd asked me when I was a merchant in Praxus if I would ever kill anyone, I would have sworn up and down that I'd never do it, no matter what. But that conviction died about two breems after the Decepticons started to raze the city, when I beat a seeker to death with what was left of my store displays."

He sighed.

"You're asking me if I would kill an innocent to help save others? Percy, I'm not sure there are any innocents left on Cybertron anymore. They either gave up their innocence like I did and picked a side or they died in the crossfire. But, I mean, assuming there were any left...yeah, I probably would if the right situation came up. And as much as I hate myself for it, I probably wouldn't even feel bad about it. Not for very long, anyway. I have, we as a race have, just killed so much that it's lost all meaning, hasn't it?"

Perceptor smiled and cocked an eyebrow. "Again, I agree entirely. As prime might say, we destroy what we seek to preserve. It's easy to forget what we're fighting for, and fight out of base instinct and pure habit. Here we are fighting for peace between the diseased dogmatic factions, for our own survival as a species." his smile faded gravely. 'And I fear that it is the rest of the universe that shall suffer should we succeed...

.. ah ! we're here !" He nodded, suddenly cheerful, towards a carved onyx sign beside the road. It's faded golden lettering read : you are now entering

Grange Hills
Home to the hauty. A recluded suburb set in the northern slopes of jagged, metallic foothills that lead to the barren plateaux of Torus, Grange Hills offered an unimpeded view over the rest of Protihex, stretching out in the valley beneath it. The abandoned, decaying manors and luxury appartments were once the homes of the elite minds of medicine. Professors of the great Protihex Medical Mechanics University and some of the most illustrious figures in the worlds of history and litterature looked down their noses at the city below. From here, the blast zone of the explosion in Cyclohex was blatently obvious. A black, smoking stain on the carpet of buildings.

Perceptor drove through the demolished gates and pulled the cargo sled to a halt in front of what must have once been the guardhouse of the private residences of grange hills, built to keep pesky students at bay. Somehow the building itself had survived the innumerable looting raids during the war, quite probably the guards had fled with the residents before the looters had even turned up. He looked at Bluestreak, with a strangely startled expression.

"I haven't been here in a while..."

"Well, that's something you probably won't have to worry about," Bluestreak assured Perceptor. "You won't have to worry about it because you probably won't succeed. Us Transformers, we're not used to solving our problems through diplomacy, negotiation or politics anymore. We're trying really hard right now, but it's not going to last. Eventually someone, somewhere, is going to get really, really upset with someone from the other faction and turn to violence to solve their dilemma. And then everything goes down the tubes."

The chatty Autobot took a moment to look around the area, then shrugged. "Heh. Never been here before. Looks like this place must have been quite a sight in the olden days, though."

"hmm... I'm actually counting on that." Perceptor mused cryptically as he eyed-up the exterior of the guardhouse, before realising he was thinking outloud and caught himself. "heu.. yes. Yes it was. A number of these dwellings were even constructed using alloy formulae of my conception. Very expensive process but.." He paused as he raised a small remote control and clicked the single red button on it. With an almost inaudible whirr of underground turbines starting up the door slid open and the interior lights flicked on. ".. also very durable. Did you know that me and Starscream used to come up here for cocktail parties? Needless to say that was a long time ago."

The hall was almost empty now, as if there's one skill in which hardened war veterens excel, it is how to get out of harms' way.

Aero blade peered at the explosives strapped to the now inert sharkticon, who was lying in a growing pool of thick, black oil on the engraved silver floor. The device itself was a perfectly made, text-book example of a simple incendiary explosive. Detonated by a serial-capacitor trigger strapped to the sharkticons' chest, wired to a hand trigger with a button shaped like the executioner face of a quintesson magistrate. It was almost too well made for such a crude design, all you had to do was...

Aero Blade unplugged the wire from the detonator. Simple. [ooc : :)]

~Moments earlier~

As Groove attentively watched the struggle over at the sickbay, regretfully from afar, he overheard Onslaught and Shockwave silently confer to one another. And as he watched, he was suddenly struck with an overwhelming sensation.

It was doubt.

With such a fragile infrastructure, was Protihex truly ready for diplomacy? Though he despised what Onslaught had proposed, somehow he found it also resonated with a harsh truth. This revelation saddened him deeply, more than anyone could every know.

For the moment however, he dismissed it, as there was a more pressing concern. But as Groove made adjustments on his "vaporator" canno, the threat had suddenly abated.

"What a relief," Groove exhaled.

---

With the assumption that all was under control, Groove redirected his focus back to Shockwave, though he refused to face him.

"I cannot stop you, Shockwave, nor do I have the desire to. I can't begin to understand your motivations," he said despondently. "But, things have changed. Perhaps irrevocably. I don't know if it is for the better or worse. But, as an envoy myself, I must learn to change, just as the situation here has, in order to address newer developments in an appropriate context. I-"

He looked to the fallen bodies of the Sharkticons.

"I once thought there was a more tactful way to address the conflict here. But things have become far more complex. I still want to be an advocate for unity. And though I abhor the notion of a stronger military presence, Protihex needs to be protected, or else it will be lost. Much like the rest of the planet. I just hope, Shockwave, that you will govern your people wisely."

Onslaught made no effort to even pretend that he wasn't listening in on Groove's words with Shockwave.

"Diplomacy and even democracy are an important factor in civilian governments," he told the Protectobot. "No one, Autobot or Decepticon, wants to live in a society where violence is the only available solution. But by the same token, if those things aren't backed up by force, or at least the threat of force, then they are meaningless. After all, what good is a treaty or a law if there is no one to enforce it?"

"Don't be offended if I wait to see results before I accept your claims at face value," Fortress Maximus told Pipeline. "I've heard good things about you, but the damage to the city and her people has been quite extensive. I've only managed to survey a few nearby buildings, but they've all suffered severe structural damage." He paused for a moment, then added, "Perceptor might need your help soon -- he is planning on setting up a residential area for the city's Autobots."

Cerebros watched Swindle as the Combaticon made his way deeper into the building, but his attention was mostly on the building itself. When the smaller Transformer stepped underneath a particularly rickety section of ceiling, Cerebros called out to him.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I really don't like having to do this."

Swindle turned slowly to face him, and Cerebros saw his optics widen as he saw the laser rifle the Autobot had produced out of subspace. "Well, uh, hey, you know, you don't have to do this. Maybe I could, you know, make it worth your while not to?"

"I don't think so. Letting a full gestalt team fall under Shockwave's command is too big of a risk." Cerebros shook his head. "You know, I was really hoping Brawl would be the one I got a chance to take out."

"But, uh..." Desperation showed in Swindle's face. "This is gonna look suspicious, you know. When they find my laser-scorched body, people are gonna start asking questions."

"No they won't," Cerebros told him.

"They, uh, aren't going to ask questions?"

"They aren't going to find you," Cerebros clarified. "And even if they did, there wouldn't be any laser marks to speak of. You were injured in a tragic construction accident, and my repair bay just didn't have the parts on-hand to put you back together again. At least, not in the same form."

Before the Decepticon could ask any more questions, Cerebros fired, not at Swindle, but straight into the section of roof he'd been eyeing. The rafters gave out, dumping a couple tonnes of debris right on the Combaticon's head.

Cerebros let the dust settle for a few seconds, then started to work digging out the crushed Decepticon. Once he got to the bottom of the debris heap he nodded in satisfaction.

He's trashed, but there's enough left that my repair bay will have something to work with. Good.

Schooling his face into a semi-convincing shocked expression, he picked up Swindle's crushed body and started to carry him out of the building.

Inappropriately, the Tri-dee across the room began to play a news report speculating about a Decepticon assault on Crystal City, filling the air with the sounds of a battle.

Shockwave had to agree with Onslaught; there had to be order and someone to enforce it. However, he did not wish this partition to be recorded as proof of the threat of continued belligerent Decepticon ideology.

"I concur: It is essential that peace be maintained," he said, addressing Groove. With that, he gave his attention back to Onslaught and went on: "To that end, Protihex would be best run by a coalition of elected officials. Of course, there would be of necessity a transition period where guidelines could be established between those who have prior experience of leadership." He was distracted when Aero Blade stood up and disarmed the Sharkticon's bomb. "Please, excuse me."

"Of course," Onslaught replied deferentially to Shockwave, although in truth he had little respect for democratic rule. It was important to have citizen representation in government, of course, but when those representatives were given actual authority things went down the tubes very, very quickly. He had spent enough time studying governments on Earth to see how woefully inefficient leaders could be when they were forced to pander to the lowest common denominator of their citizenry to maintain power.

We'll have to make sure, then, that this 'democratic' government is dominated by those with the will to do what has to be done, no matter the consequences.

The Space Mafia had arrived in Protihex. And although they shared Cerebros' concern for the local economy, to say their plans to influence it were quite a bit different from his would be a phenomenal understatement.

The shuttles circled for a while, then set down in an abandoned residential complex in the community that had once been called 'Templar Heights'. Within the next few days, it would become Black Shadow's own private little empire.

He had tried to expunge the weaknesses of his hard-wired limbic systems, but this single emotion had proven impossible, at the last, to repress or remove. It was an emotion the Decepticons had used against the Autobots throughout the long ages of their war; it was the most basic of all, crouching in the deep, dark places where the monsters howled; and it had been in the vanguard when the other emotions came crashing back through the blocks he had so sucessfully put on them.

Shockwave experienced the fear that he was making a grave mistake and one for which all the citizens of Protihex, those already here and those to come, would suffer.

"As you say," he managed to murmur deferentially.

"Wheelie will do as you say," Wheelie replied to Cog with an apologetic grin. "Gnaw's my friend - don't hurt, I pray!"

He removed his hands from the projector and a wavering, static-shot image appeared in the air. There was a Quintesson officer waving two tentacles in broad sweeping gestures and, at the periphery of the frame, clearly other Sharkticons.

"Acknowledge the presence of Scientist Vendix, serfs!" the Quintesson shouted (via Gnaw's mouth). "You are greatly honoured!"

Things seeming to have calmed down for the moment, Aero Blade looked about his surroundings, absently wondering momentarily where Stratus had been all this time and if he was stirring up trouble again. Knowing the minicon always returned sooner or later, he turned his attention back to his previous tasked, starting to scrouge around the hotel for damaged materials that he could recycle and convert. There was still quite a list of things he needed to assemble for Ratchet.

"Hopefully that will be the last of the excitement for a while," Aero Blade murmered mostly to himself, setting his mind back to his job.

Onslaught nodded to Shockwave, not picking up on the other Decepticon's reluctance. He was usually good at reading other Transformers, but whatever Shockwave's internal turmoils might be, they didn't make enough of an impact on his logical demeanour to register.

"Not really," Cerebros said in response to Hot House. "An actor that turns into a control console wouldn't be much good to you, and, well..." He rapped his knuckles on the door of the repair bay he'd sealed Swindle inside, "I have a feeling you don't have a camera big enough to film all of me. I appreciate the offer, though." He shrugged. "But if you need a mobile battle platform in one of your films, I suppose I could be talked into making a cameo."

As he spoke, he watched Pipeline and Gusher work.

For the theatrics, the scenery that Starscream was gesturing at was pretty much the same that he and Spasma, the binary-bonded partner of the now-deceased Apeface, (OOC: Died in CC a little while ago. the tragedy..) had been traipsing through for a good long while now.

"Yeah, nice. You can put me down now, there's no water and I feel like a parrot, sitting on you like this." Spasma wasn't in the mood for Starscream to get all poetic on him, and young spasma was a slap in the face. Well, compared to Starscream he was young, but still.

Onslaught's message surprised Vortex. He had spent a lot of time lately observing the patterns of activity in the area, and things were going slow and steady. Of course, the best way for him to find out what was up was to simply ask someone, but why ask when you can Interrorgate?

"Copy, Onslaught. En route to your position now. Do you require air cover or shall I accompany you on the deck? over."

May as well be formal on the lines, you never knew who was listening in. And the Decepticons chain-of-command was strong as ever. That was the story and Vortex was sticking to it, even as he angled his rotor down and headed towards the Sterling.

From the garden of the guardhouse, Perceptor had a good vantage point on the circling fleet of ships. "They appear to have landed in templar heights." He said as he transformed from telescope to robot mode. Turning to Bluestreak with a perplexed expression. "unknown allegiances with unknown intentions. Pipeline had to smile, well,he normally would, but vehicle mode tended to stop things like that, but he tried anyway.Protacal was a bit of a problem right now. This city lacked rules as was,and little formal government. No Iacon by any means, but one that could become so much more then one.And though he was a construction worker by trade,he'd be damned if he was going to let anyone block this cities dream. And Gusher would stand by his side. The wars had taught them it was better to stick together then to fight over everything. "Well, why don't we start off with what skills you bring to the organization?" Black Shadow sized up Points with a look. "What sort of functions did you carry out for Governor?"

Not far away, Flashbulb and Shutter were unloading crates of contraband, which several other thugs were then carrying into several houses that were in the process of being converted into storage areas. The crime boss noted with satisfaction that Shank was keeping a very close watch on Jitterbug; the thief wasn't likely to steal from his own employers, but one could never be sure.

At the gates to the walled-in community, Firewagon and Arrowhead were reconnecting the guard tower autocannons, which would go a long way toward making sure the fiasco at the Black Nova would never happen again. Other members of the crew were floating around, surveying the homes that they would be moving into shortly. Lens Flare had occupied himself transferring Black Shadow's personal belongings to the three-story mini-palace that would serve as the boss's home.

Everything is going perfectly, he mused. With luck, we'll be completely set up before the locals start poking their noses into things.

"A problem?" Shockwave maintained his outward poise, focusing his monocular on Onslaught. "Very likely..."

If his calculations were correct, Perceptor had signalled from the once highly desirable Grange Hills sector. He had not seen it in a considerable while, but well recalled the broad landscape and sweeping artifical hills which had given it its name; he once owned a small, tasteful domicile there as one of the perks of his former life among Cybertron's Elite. He glanced at Turbofire. "And your point can't be underestimated either. Whoever assaulted you may well have accosted Gnaw and done something to him as well."

"I must respectfully disagree," Onslaught told Shockwave. "Vortex would be an ideal scout. “And as appealing as the idea of setting up yet another make-shift facility is," he then answered Cog. "We are a bit strapped on time and resources. I think moving operations to Perceptor’s new settlement is one possible option, until everything has been arranged to construct a more permanent facility. Another option is to utilize the Steelhaven’s medical facilities. It would be far more efficient for the time being, and for Tap Out’s sake - as well as Gnaw here - a more practical solution.”

Ratchet then looked to Aero Blade. “Well, we've quite the task on our hands, assuming you're interested,” Ratchet smiled. “We need to pack up all our equipment and prepare for transport. Aero Blade nodded to Ratchet's response, but seemed to drift off into a contemplative mood as he likely started to calculate about the new arrangements. "My lab is the best place to work that I can think of, but that should do well enough..."

He then looked over towards Cog. "What about an unused small-ship docking bay? Something as big as the Steelhaven might have one someplace. We could convert it temporarily for our needs - the cons could come for help but also not have to go very far into the ship. And if there's emergency lock-down doors like on most docking bays I'm familiar with, that could be used to keep them from getting further in if they get too rowdy."

Onslaught was ludicrously conspicuous as he rolled through the streets, and Shockwave was even more so. Vortex's presence in the air nearby only heightened the small unit's threat index, making them hard to not notice. It was precisely what Onslaught had been hoping for. With such an obvious military presence approaching from this direction, the unknowns who had landed in the city were certain to focus their attention on the trio of Decepticons...and ignore the much-less-threatening Mirage as he approached.

Several miles away from the occupied compound, when Onslaught was relatively sure he would be able to bombard the area purely by sight, he activated his brakes and slowed to a stop. He checked the precise distance between them and the compound, then elevated his cannons slightly and loaded a pair of shells into his firing chambers.

"We should wait here."

Approach to Templar Heights

Where Shockwave hung back, trying to seem inconspicuous in the presences of Onslaught and Vortex - and not suceeding for many obvious reasons - Mirage quietly peeled away from the group. Shifting back to root mode, flickering in and out of visibility and using the many highly-decorative hills and hollows of the landscape, he began to work his way round the foot of the residential compound of Templar Heights towards what was considered the unscalable rocky slope to the east. The Autobot knew this area well; he had spent happier times here, relaxing and strolling, attending Elite social calendar events and, importantly, climbing that steep slope for a bet or two.

Even as he detected rather purposeful movement up on the walls, Shockwave received a private message from Gigatron that shook him:

"Shockwave we have not always seen optic to optic, but I want to inform you that a war has broken out between myself and a rival faction led by Megatron. This is unfortunate as it will leave us divided at the time of a great threat to our existence. I enclose all information I have in my possession on the Imperials. If worse comes to worse you may have to lead us against them.

In the Meantime I beg of you continue to work with the Autobots , it is only through co-operation that we will defeat the Imperial menace. We will need new tactics new weapons , new technology. Many refugees are fleeing Polyhex I suggest you make the best use of them possible , select the brightest and the best for while the rest of us are involved in war and intrigue there will be no time for things such as research and development. Also as well as being immune to the ravages of war if it is developed in Protihex you can share it as needs be be that with Autobots or the eventual winner of our civil war."

Lead us against them? Shockwave lowered his head, staring into the green decorative ground covering at his heavy feet (ooc - think 'grass') and scrolling the stream of compressed tac which followed the message.

"Gnaw needs aid," Wheelie said, approaching Aero Blade, who seemed sunk in some serious contemplation. "Can parts be made?"

Outside

As awareness returned to his mind, Swindle knew something was wrong. He felt...different, somehow, almost as if he was waking up in someone else's body.

And then he remembered.

Activating his optics, he looked out the now-open hatch of the repair bay he'd been sealed in and saw Cerebros. With a noise that was half angry roar and half terrified squeal, he threw himself toward the hatch, at his attacker. His charge ended abruptly, though, when his head clanged against the lip of the hatch, turning his attack into a pathetic half-roll that ended with Swindle flat on his back.

"What the Pit did you do to me, Autobot?"

"What I had to do," Cerebros told him. "I detest it, I really do. But I couldn't just let a Decepticon combiner team run around the city unchecked, could I?"

"So, what, you gutted me?" Swindle crossed his arms, scowling.

"Not quite," Cerebros replied.

"What do you mean 'not quite'?"

"Look at yourself, Swindle," Cerebros gestured down toward the Decepticon's body.

"Huh?" Swindle looked down at his torso, then jumped slightly when he realized that his initial assessment was right; he was in someone else's body. Fury bubbled up inside the Combaticon. "How dare you? You think you can just shoot me, rebuild me without permission and I won't do anything about it? You violated me, you Autobot scum!"

"Your new body has fifteen percent more strength, twelve percent more cargo capacity and a top speed twenty-four kilometres per hour faster than your old one," Cerebros sighed. "Not to mention the fact that you'll never have to worry about your teammates picking up on your schemes when you're combined. Oh, and you're about half again as tall as you were before, too."

"Oh," Swindle said, sounding a little mollified. "That explains why I brained myself on the door, and I suppose the enhanced abilities would come in handy..." He scowled, but his spark really wasn't in it anymore. "But that still doesn't make this OK. You shot me!"

"I considered bribing you," Cerebros told him, "but I couldn't trust that you'd accept."

"Tisk, tisk," Swindle said. "I'm always open to bribes."

"I'll keep that in mind next time," Cerebros said.

"Right," Swindle said. "Next time. But you know, I really do need to be going." As he transformed to vehicle mode and drove off, he couldn't quite keep himself from saying, "Nice. Real nice."

There was so much - too much - to assimilate. Shockwave could immediately see some of the implications in the information, but he needed to categorise and review the facts logically. He was also somewhat taken aback that Gigatron would place such trust in him after he had deliberately hidden himself away in Protihex, far from the centres of power. He managed a deep rumble of self-depreciating laughter (not even noticing it was laughter); Gigatron had located him so easily and, obviously, knew something of local events. Maybe there were unsuspected Gigatron factionists in Protihex? Whatever...

He heard Onslaught's question and fumbled out a reply. "It is imperative to ascertain whether the incomers have peaceful intentions and are willing to contribute to the redevelopment of Protihex."

The sound of laughter coming from Shockwave (Shockwave of all mechs) told Onslaught that something was seriously wrong, but he doubted he would get a straight answer from his fellow Decepticon if he pressed the issue. Instead he dropped it entirely, responding with a flat, toneless, "Of course," that made it perfectly clear that he knew there was more going on. The hidden meaning of his words was obvious: Shockwave could cover up information all he wanted, but Onslaught would find out. It was a matter of when, not if.

Perhaps the time has come to reach out to the Decepticons in Polyhex, he thought.

Having already loaded up most of the medical equipment onto a large sledge for the short venture back to the Steelhaven, Ratchet moved onto the patients. One by one, he pushed the gurneys onto an separate, enclosed transport, careful to make certain that they were secured so as not to rock about during the move.

As Ratchet moved to Gnaw’s inert body, still hooked up to life support gear, he listened to Cog, Aero Blade and Wheelie propose possible set ups at the Steelhaven -- as well as the fate of the patient that he started to roll onto the awaiting sledge.

“Gnaw will be fine,” Ratchet said reassuringly. “But that will have to wait until we're safely on board the Steelhaven. But I wonder...those attackers, they’re of a similar make aren’t they?”

Ratchet stopped midway, stroking his chin pensively. One could practically hear the proverbial gears turning, until his head perked up.

“Why didn’t I think of this earlier?” Ratchet snapped his fingers.

He approached the remains of one of the Sharkticon attackers, now shoved away in a far corner. With diagnostic scanner in had, he knelt before the body, moving it slowly up and down.

“I do not propose we use this subject for surrogate parts, but they can be replicated," he told the others. "Although I’m well enough rehearsed in Quintesson tech, it is slightly foreign by our standards.”

Once he acquired the data that he needed, Ratchet stood up. “There. The schematic I just uploaded should come in handy. Though there is some variance between Gnaw and our attacker, I should be able to sketch out the appropriate revisions that are compatible with Gnaw. And Aero Blade here should be able to fabricate the parts required without a hitch.”

---

Once Ratchet pushed Gnaw into the sledge, securing the life support equipment along with the him, he turned to Cog.

“Unless there is something, or someone I am missing, we’re almost ready to head out,” Ratchet told him. “Should we organize a convoy?”

Getting up had been as easy as Mirage had expected - and holding on at the top equally as hard as he had dreaded. The wall rose sheer from the very edge of the cliff and there was nothing to grab. He scrabbled, slipped and fell onto his face in a most undignified manner, scraping paint from his chassis as he perforce slid until one foot caught on a small metallic outcrop.

Lying splayed, faceplate bruised, leaking fluid from a slight tear in his left cheek, he gave a small chuckle; at least the Decepticons could not see him! Then a small sound from above alerted him to the possibility that he may have been detected, and he activated his cloaking system.

On the other hand, if they come out and ask for help we'll know that they're friendly."

Although the Headmaster went to great lengths to phrase his words politely, in his mind he was a commander giving orders to a subordinate...something that the engineer and the scientist might not have agreed with if they'd known.

Fighting the unwanted acceleration, Mirage screamed across the decorative landscape with tyres burning. That hurt - more than the stings the beams had delivered to his chassis. Chagrined, he realised he had over-reacted; what he had received was a very firm door in the face. His only excuse was that his experience of Decepticon responses to his incursions had pre-programmed him over too many vorns...

'Stand down! Stand down!' he fired over the pre-arranged channel. 'Our visitors just do not seem to like visitors.'

"You don't say?"Gusher smiled as he looked up at Quickmix. He considered Cerbros words. "Hadn't thought about that,to be honest. Considering the cities state, anyone who didn't bring one or two is kinda not thinking."Pipeline was the planner, not him,but he did have sense. Some sense.

Shockwave had known all along that to show his 'face' here might trigger an extreme and unwelcoming response, but, in light of the current paucity of information and with mind to some of the facts Gigatron had sent him, he had no choice. Templar Heights, near as...

Mirage grinned back at the mech who had shouted to him and, as he ran on, thought, Private property? Oh, yes, indeed - but not yours... He estimated the distance to Shockwave's party and jinked to the right, picking up the pace and sending out on a particular wavelength a repetitive message: peace!

-------------------------------------------------------------
Shockwave, receiving no reply from Perceptor, who seemed self-absorbed, moved on towards the hill and checked his weapons status with acceptable result. Thus far, nothing had been forthcoming from the unknown group and it was logical to assume that they were either a) afraid or b) potentially able to maintain a belligerent status. Logic, therefore, also dictated that he order the attack to ascertain which, yet... yet...

It was then that he picked up a signal:

“This is a message for Shockwave. My name is Krok and I lead a force of decepticons consisting of me, Chop Shop, Charger, Loadrun and beastbox. We request to join you. We are under service of gigatron but we strongly believe taking a side with Megatron or Gigatron will not help further the decepticon cause. We believe the autobots and off-world threats should deserve our highest priority. To restore the decepticon empire in it’s glory is our priority.”

Shockwave stopped dead and swung round to regard his colleagues; more problems. Almost immediately, he received Mirage's call indicating a need for recovery.

Onslaught picked up the transmission at the same time as Shockwave, but lacking his fellow Decepticon's many weighing preoccupations he reacted far more decisively.

"That's our signal," he said. This time he didn't even bother asking for permission from Shockwave before he barked, "Vortex, go! Provide covering fire for Mirage and be prepared to extract him through the air if he needs it."

Seconds later, the Combaticon leader's cannons started to sing, a low-pitched thwoom that usually heralded nothing but death and destruction. In this case, though, he had taken the precaution of loading shells tipped with concussion warheads, which would stun and terrify but cause a minimum of physical damage. Lobbed over the walls and into the compound, they would be more than sufficient at disorganizing the reactions of Protihex's unwanted visitors.

Black Shadow took a step back, Shockwave's foot glancing off of his hip and forcing the Pretender to twist sideways. That made the UV rays that the Decepticon fired in his direction miss the mobster's head, but they still passed close enough that his cloaking device wavered as its emitters were knocked out of phase by the radiation.

For a little under a second, a translucent but very visible Black Shadow could be seen. He drew a threatening-looking weapon out of subspace and was in the process of bringing it to bear on Shockwave when the cloak's redundant surge-protection systems kicked in. The cloak reactivated, and Black Shadow was gone from sight again. The again-invisible mobster opened fire with his particle beam rifle, trying to cut the ground out from underneath Shockwave's feet.

"Just go away, you one-eyed freak! We don't want any trouble!"

Since the weapon had its own power supply and didn't draw energy directly from his shell, Black Shadow didn't need to deactivate his cloak as he fired, so no one could see it when he dove a dozen metres to the left of his current position after taking the shot.

"You claim to be seeking sanctuary? Surprisingly few refugees travel so well-provided and organised," he challenged, shrugging aside the ion stream. "And you would appear to be a business rather than a representive of a charitable concern..."

He was tardy in responding to the EMPs; although x-rays affected one warhead, sending it widely off course, the second struck and, despite previously installed precautions against such attack, he found his flight mechanisms affected. As he fell, he ruefully filed a reminder to protect his aerial capacities in addition to those used on the ground.

Onslaught was still backing up, but the lasers were tracking faster than he could move. He prepared himself for the agony of being sliced open...but it never came. The energy beams died along with the rest of the power on the block, moments before they would have gutted him.

"Whoever did that," he broadcast on an open frequency, "I owe you an energon drink."

The Combaticon leader took advantage of the distraction to transform into robot mode, draw his sonic rifle and charge toward the now-silent gun emplacements.

Black Shadow twisted in the air to avoid Perceptor's shot, then replied, "So do we. But we'd rather not play at all."

Seeing Shockwave heading for the ground, the gangster transformed and silenced his weapons. "You're right. We are a business, one that has interests all across Cybertron and on countless other planets."

He approached the powerful, falling Decepticon, particle beam rifle in hand but lowered.

"And before you ask, no, not all of those businesses are above-board. But there's one thing we're not in the business of, and that's destroying the community we live it. We invested millions of shanix in Polyhex while we were there, and I fully intend to do the same here. Not because we're a bunch of crazed philanthropists, but because it's in our own best interests to do it."

As he spoke, the nearby street lights flickered and died. Sighing, he added, "And we'll start by fixing the local power grid."

Bluestreak had been watching from the sidelines, not particularly interested in fighting alongside a bunch of Decepticons. When the power went out, however, he figured it was in his own best interests to do something. Before he could figure out what, though, he saw a figure standing in the shadows close to him.

"Nice view, eh?" the figure asked.

"I suppose," Bluestreak replied. "You got a name?"

"Yep," the figure replied smugly. "You know it, too. I'm Swindle."

"Swindle?" Bluestreak frowned; the voice was right, but his mysterious visitor didn't look the part. "You've grown."

"Grown? Yeah, I guess you could say that." Swindle scoffed. "Of course, after your boss dropped a tonne of debris on my head I didn't have anywhere to go but up."

"Fort Max did that?"

"Apparently he couldn't stand to let a combiner run around his city, so he crushed me and rebuilt me in a new body."

"Good for him," Bluestreak replied. "Well, except for the whole 'rebuilding' part..."

"One of these days," Swindle told him, "that knee-jerk hate you've got for us 'Cons is really going to bite you in the backside, you know that?"

"Maybe," Bluestreak admitted. "I'll take my chances." He frowned. "Why aren't you down there helping out your buddies?"

"Because it's not my place," Swindle told him. "Not anymore. You see, us 'Cons are people too, and sometimes we actually change. I spent over a year working your side of the aisle and then the next three years fighting Quintessons while you lot scrapped with each other on Earth. I figure I've put in my time. I'm done with fighting, no matter who it's for." Shrugging, he asked, "What about you?"

Bluestreak wasn't quite sure how to answer that. "I don't know that I'm done with fighting," he said, "but fighting a bunch of criminals alongside a Decepticon who once hung me from the rafters isn't something I'm going to do any time soon."

"Can't say that I blame you," Swindle told him. "So lets just sit down, you and I, and see exactly how this plays out."

"Sure," Bluestreak shrugged. "Why not?"

Mirage grimaced. He was down and unprotected, but the three units who had trailed him seemed to be simply standing some way away, faces turned. Carefully, he eased up to his knees, drawing his hunting rifle from subspace as he did so; they were easy targets...

A brief flash distracted him and he found himself looking at a battle between Shockwave and the flyer who had knocked him down so casually. Then a missile swept aside by Shockwave came screeching in his direction, prompting him to swing his rifle and, taking rapid aim, fire at it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Shockwave met the ground, which caved in and left him to struggle erect at the base of a small crater. Above him, Black Shadow loomed with his rifle in hand, but seemed to be ignoring him. Not one to miss the opportunity, Shockwave brought his left arm up.

"You are not Decepticons," he stated flatly and generated a stream of microwaves. "Or Autobots. Or Neutrals, given those qualifications."

"We'll hold you to it then."Gusher told Onslaught on the open frequency. "Now,you might want to get inside a building."What was coming was something they'd put into practice on several walled cities since thier upgrade (or downgrade, from the heigth perspective).Several strings of mines had been attatched to debris, and pointed in the direction of up and pointed over the wall.Block had since gotten as far out of the way as he could.

Setting up a blast shield over a bent sewer cover, pointed in the same direction of the Heights.Without Quickmix answering, they had assembled something that probably should not have flown, and probably wouldn't.Both magnetically clamped thier feet to the cover, and both pressed thier hammers. The shockwave went off,and both gripped thier guns tightly. An explosion of light and sound, and the debris became deadly missles and shrapnel, raining down on the entire area.Pipeline and Gusher were among it,on a bent disk with crude wings, and holding onto bars that shook both from fear, and from possible bad planning.

"I'll take that under advisement."

Onslaught got into a building, alright. In fact, he charged into the guardhouse that had, until very recently, been spraying laser fire in his direction. The first enemy he saw, a smallish Transformer with a bookish look about him and a visibly air-based alt-mode, took the butt of the Combaticon's sonic rifle to the head before he even realized what was happening.

The other enemy, an imposing figure who matched Onslaught in height and build, threw a chair at the Decepticon's head. Onslaught blasted it to pieces, but had to dive for cover when the enemy started shooting a stream of incendiary chemicals in his direction.

Black Shadow was knocked back into a building by Shockwave's microwave burst, something which proved to be very fortunate a few seconds later when debris started to rain down on his former location.

The Pretender rolled to his feet, then fired a particle beam blast into Shockwave's crater.

...It was then that he realised he hadn't brought his gun, Or anything else for that matter. He had been so absorbed in his thoughts that for a brief second he physically froze, awed by the realisation. It was also then that a large lump of draincover fell from the sky and hit him squarely on the back of the head, knocking him out cold as pieces of sewer peppered all around the ground.

As the sky rained chunks of debris, Shockwave dropped to one knee and, protecting his monocular with his right hand, methodically disintegrated as much as he could. He received several minor dings and a shower of microfine dust settled, shimmering, on his purple livery.

He was too preoccupied to answer Black Shadow or avoid the particle beam, which incinerated his silvery coating with a red hiss and tossed him down onto his back. With an angry roar, he flipped back to his feet and sprang for the lip of the crater.

The dart thudded into the nosecone of the EMP, testimony to Mirage's targeting prowess, and it exploded. As it did so, it broadcast an incomplete wave - it stung, dancing sparks across his body, but he registered that it did little else to him.

As directed by Cog, Ratchet had the wounded rolled into cargo bay six. All thing considering, this setting was by far more adequate to treat the wounded.

Later, after quickly setting up his equipment, as well as utilizing the technology and materials now available on board the Steelhaven, Tap Out and Gnaw were now Ratchet's top priorities.

Retrieving the schematic he uploaded from the one of the Sharkticon assailants who attacked the Sterling Hotel, streaming the data to a monitor sitting at his work station, Ratchet began to make the preparations to operate.

He lifted up a small pen-shaped surgical tool, it's tip glowing bright, "Alright, my Sharkticon friend," Ratchet said to to the inert Gnaw. "You've been out of it for far too long. Aero Blade, think you can replicate some of these Sharkticon parts with the noted modifications?"

"So you're here to join a gang?" Bluestreak sounded less than impressed.

"Then why do you want to meet him?"

"You were a businessmech once," Swindle reminded the Autobot. "Would you have set up shop in a new city without trying to find a few business partners first?"

"Good point," Bluestreak replied. "What sort of business do you plan on getting into?"

"Real estate, actually," Swindle told him. "There's a lot of unused land in Protihex, and it would be a shame if this sort of fight happened again over a territorial dispute."

That piqued Bluestreak's interest.

"And how, exactly, do you plan on preventing them?"

At that, Swindle grinned. "That would be telling. But if you're willing to watch my back, I'll give you a little demonstration."

Bluestreak was taken aback by that. A Decepticon, asking him for backup? Then again, he did join the Autobots a while back, and Nightbeat's lot would be dead if he hadn't stuck his neck out to save them. He can't be all bad, can he? "OK," he said, "I'm game. What's the plan?"

As he pulled himself out of the crater, Shockwave registered the mine as it first swung towards him and was then snapped back by a mech in Black Shadow's grip. He moved to the left, meaning to draw a bead on his erstwise foe, and practically stepped on an outflung hand; he scanned the fallen Perceptor briefly, discovering the Autobot was merely temporarily offlined, but his current location with regard to the ongoing battle was precarious.

Logic said to attack Black Shadow while he was otherwise distracted, but a strange emotion (Shockwave ran a search on his databanks and discovered the unfamiliar concept 'compassion') made him swoop quickly and heave the fallen over his right shoulder. This left him, he computed, impossibly vulnerable until such time that Perceptor was in a safe position.

Mirage rose, fastidiously brushing sparks off his armour, and then winced at a wailing scream. He snatched his rifle round and lowered it again. It appeared that his three hunters had been disenabled by the EMP wave, although he felt, personally, that it had been too weak to do more than sting.

The light emitting from Ratchet's tool reflected off of Gnaw's body, causing it to flash and strobe.

Every so often Ratchet would look up from the inert Sharkticon body, glancing over at the read out being fed to the life support equipment hooked up to his patient.

"So far, so good," Ratchet said to himself.

His primary concern was to repair and replace the severed primary auxiliary lines that lead to the Sharkitcon's energon converter and spark casing, which, apparently, had been punctured by some blast.

Though this was a complex procedure, the resources available on board the Steelhaven meant the procedure should go by without a hitch.

Receiving no further instructions from the busy doctor, Aero Blade resumed his work on the parts, deciding it was best to finish up that task before moving onto the others. Soon enough though he'd need to start modifying their work area into a suitable set-up, at least for their temporary needs. Already his processor was starting to calculate what he'd need to make the changes, but he tried to keep himself focused on the task ahead of him, not wanting to risk a distraction causing him to mis-work one of Gnaw's replacement parts.

While the tech worked, he'd at one point he'd feel something lightly land on his shoulder, though he need not look up to know what it was. "Finally done exploring, Stratus?"

"For the moment," The minicon replied briefly. "Thought I'd see how well you were doing, given your assigned group to work with..."

As the minicon paused in speaking, Aero Blade didn't need to look up to know that his partner was now looking back and forth between himself and the relatively nearby doctor. "Don't ask..." Aero Blade spoke firmly, not looking up from work. "It's taken all of my willpower to try to forget what he is while I"m here..."

Stratus looked about once more, then shrugged briefly, hopping off of Aero Blade and instead flying over to where Ratchet was working. He stayed out of the way of the doctor's way, but was still close enough to look as though he was scrutinizing the Ratchet's work. "So how'd you wrangle my bot? I just figured you and me could talk a bit, maybe head off this nasty little mistunderstanding before anyone gets hurt." He glanced toward the damaged Perceptor. "Well, anyone important, anyway," he corrected with a shrug.

(OOC: No Autobrand, though. Just an Autobot body frame. :))

Onslaught glared up at Bluestreak with fury in his optics.

"What!" In a flash he was on his feet, his fist smashing into the Autobot's face.

"In the universe!" As Bluestreak fell, the Decepticon grabbed the barrel of his rifle and tore it out of his hands.

"Is wrong!" Onslaught caught Bluestreak by the chest while he was still falling and slammed him up against the wall.

"With you people?" The Combaticon leaned in to glare at his attacker, but scowled when he saw that the Autobot was smiling. "What's so funny?"

"Swindle told me you would react this way," Bluestreak told him. "He was very specific about it, actually."

Onslaught's optics narrowed. "And what else did Swindle tell you, pray tell?"

Flashbulb reacted only slightly more to Mirage's energy attack than he had to the physical blows that landed previously, although there was no doubt he was in a significant amount of pain. He was missing 2/3 of his brain, though, and couldn't do much to react to the damage he was taking.

Gasket and Grommet rolled into the area beside and slightly behind Turbofire. They combined, transforming into their shared robot mode as they entered the area surrounding the Heights.

"Boy, you weren't kidding," Cog muttered ruefully as he took in the chaos surrounding them.

Turbofire had been at the scene of the battle for only a few seconds, but was speechless for a moment. Cog's comment woke him from his thoughts. Turbofire transformed and summoned his weapon from subspace, ready for anything. "It's your call Cog. Do we try to do this all stealthy-like, or do we announce our presence, and try to see if anyone needs our help...?"

Shockwave stood stock still, Perceptor draped over his left shoulder, and regarded this new 'Swindle' closely. The exoform was different, but analysis of the language and specific intonation he had used indicated this was definitely Swindle.

"Identity confirmed," Shockwave stated with distinct surprise in his vocalisation. Then, somewhat more circumspectly - for he indeed did know this unit of old - he asked, "What is it that you wish with me?"

-------------------------------------------------------------
Mirage shook his head. This was like being in the middle of a bar brawl and finding out your opponent was too seriously far overenergised to be offlined. If he was going to take them into custody for questioning, it would have to be in a different way...

There was one last option. Slipping his weapon away, Mirage began to move towards the main thrust of the fighting and shouted back at Flashbulb, "You can't catch me!"

"Hmm, stupid Decepticons and Autobots alike. They have all seen how well they work together and unlike the Quints crime will always exist." He said almost smiling as he brought his freeze rays online and watched for a good shot.

“Tranquilizer?” Ratchet replied, a bit shocked by what Stratus seemed to be insinuating.

Ratchet looked to mini-con, rolled his eyes, then averted his gaze back to Gnaw.

“No coercion on my part, I assure you. Fortress Maximus assigned him with me. Actually, Aero Blade has been a tremendous help. Couldn’t have a better assistant.”

Swindle gave Shockwave a friendly smile that didn't carry over to his optics; hearing emotion in the larger Transformer's voice came as a shock to him.

"Since you're a smart guy, I'll spare you the whole sales pitch. What I want is for you and your buddies to stop trying to blow up the neighbourhood. You're costing me a lot of shanix, and you really don't want to do that. The contacts I can bring to the table would help you and yours out quite a bit."

Shockwave considered. In retrospect, he had perhaps over-reacted to the incomers... But their arrival at this time, and from the direction of Polyhex, did not soothe his suspicions. In fact, he was now calculating the possibility that Black Shadow was indeed a businessmech, although caution again advised him to question what business, particularly as Swindle would appear to be somehow already involved.

"You are suggesting it is possible to broker a deal?" he asked.

"I know it is," Swindle told Shockwave. "You see, no one's lived on this plot of land for quite a few years now. That doesn't mean our buddies here can just move in and take it over, but it does mean that the rightful owners of the place were willing to part with it for a song. As soon as I heard about the trouble here I got on the comm to some of my old contacts, made a few deals, stuff like that. I'm sure you'd be bored by the details, but the gist of it is that as of eight minutes ago I'm the sole owner of this entire neighbourhood. If these goons want to live in the Heights I'll be happy to have them as tenants...for a reasonable fee, of course. And since it's my property, I'll be in a very good position to keep an optic on 'em for the rest of you."

Bluestreak shot Onslaught a contemptuous look. "It doesn't matter what else Swindle told me," he told the Decepticon. "What matters is that you're being kept out of the way while he fixes the mess that you and your idiot buddies made when you decided to shoot first and ask questions later."

Onslaught was tempted to crush the life out of the impudent Autobot, but he had to admit that he had a point. Engaging these invaders with military force had seemed like a good idea at the time, but the facts didn't seem to bear that out. He wasn't quite sure how else he could have approached it, though. He was a soldier, he'd always been a soldier and he wasn't sure how else to approach a situation like this.

Perhaps, he mused, it's time that I learn.

"Ah, so it's his fault," Stratus answered to Ratchet. "I'll have a chat with him later. You just make sure to do a good job with this guy; don't need you rushing it and messing up the parts my bot spent all that time working on," the minicon spoke cheerfully, hoping off the table and flying off elsewhere.

Leaving the doc be with his last parting bit of sarcasm, Stratus now had the task of entertaining himself until Aero Blade was freed up enough with his current job to get Stratus in on things with him. Presently he spotted what seemed to be a less than typical autobot, that being Wheelie. Curiosity peaked, the minicon moved in closer to the orage bot, trying to get a better look at him without actually coming in range of his reach.

"How did you acquire..." Shockwave trailed off, wincing at his own naivete. He gestured towards the compound up on hill and said, instead, "This property, including the immediate surrounding area and substantial subsurface levels, was held by members of the Iacon Elite. Aero Blade meanwhile had been progressing at his usual fast rate, and was nearing the ending point of his task. "It'll be just a little bit longer before the rest are done," the tech reported outloud to Ratchet. "After that I'll get to work on the conversions for this place we'll be using."

Lost upon a calm sea...

The single, ginormous yellow sun stared down from its' azur sky, and perceptor stared back. He mused vaguely that he must have been lying here forever, too weak to move or even think, slowly roasting beneath that baleful eye.

He let his head fall to one side, the monotony of the sky replaced by the monotony of purple sea stretching away to the horizon, flat as the cardiogram of a corpse. He was dimly aware that the cold, paint-like water was lapping his right foot as his tiny raft of anonymous debris floated lop-sided, and somewhat miraculously.

Perceptor had no memory of how he had come to be in such a desperate situation. He presumed he had long since given up searching for a sign of salvation and was now drifting, waiting for the last of his life to ebb away... it must be taking a very long time if he couldn't remember... in fact, it was frankly annoying. He frowned a frown of irk, this sure was a dull way to die.

He summoned a final surge of insane resolve and decided that he could at least force fates' hand, perhaps he would break a few fingers. Groaning from the strain he rolled slowly over and off the raft, dissappearing with a faint splash into the opaque water.

Purple instantly filled his vision and he lost all sense of orientation, although he had the inexplicable sensation of being upside down. He was also aware that he now had a splitting headache.

Swindle grinned. "Well, you gotta keep in mind just how few of those old elites are still alive, Shockers. A lot of 'em were killed during the war, others were killed by the Quints and quite a few more were bankrupted when their business partners and customers started dying or fleeing. Property values in Protihex have tanked since the bombings and no one wanted to hold onto real estate that's dropping in value so much." He shrugged. "Plus, it helps when you've got friends with fat blackmail files on a bunch of the ex-owners."

He glanced at the awakening Perceptor. "What's it gonna be, Shockers? Sleeping beauty is going to wake up any second now."

He shuffled Perceptor to the ground carefully, remaining crouched beside the Autobot to monitor him, and raised his head to look again at Swindle.

"Perhaps Mirage would disagree with you about the ex-owners. However, it is logical that Protihex would be better served by the closure of this ill-advised fracas; I assume you will act as an independant intermediary?"

He carried on talking calmly, "However, if Swindle perceives there is a profit to be made, and he wishes to remain among us, I am of the opinion that he will be trustworthy - to a given perameter of 'trust'."

Approaching, Mirage saw several interesting vignettes of the fighting, including Shockwave with Perceptor and an unknown mech, and Cog drawing nearer in his various component parts. He also saw Black Shadow looming, apparently without rancour, over Gusher (seriously? Gusher?). Was there a note of personal concern there? Mirage blinked, but restrained any other reaction. Instead, he asked, "What's going on?"
