2008-10-12, 03:52 AM
Once the Decepticon capital, Kaon has become important once again as Megatron's followers spread across the city-state, seizing control of its' vital locations. The city's Gigatron-loyal stewards have fled north to the Acid Wastes or been killed by Megatron's soldiers. The local elites, however, are less than happy with the situation and have begun to tacitly support a pro-Gigatron insurgency.

And underneath it all, in the belly of the ancient fortress of Kolkular itself, a menace greater than Megatron himself is stirring...

'Ah, but...' breathed Dark Walk within. 'The cryo-temperatures I am using will prevent your self-repair system initiating full recovery activity.'

"Then, I will find a medic!"

When Bombshock turned over to present his seriously damaged arm, Solder recoiled, half expecting his 'patient' to make some violent move - those optics had been too vigilant during his periods of consciousness. That exoform was of a line containing parts the medic would find useful, though, and he was not about to give up. He drew out a laser scalpel.

Hypersensitive to danger himself, Solder caught the sound of someone drawing near the sickbay location and, checking Bombshock was out, moved quickly to seal the exposed circulatory pipes and clamp an electoanasthaesia device to the relevant shoulder. If anyone entered, they would see him hard at work on the injuries.

"Whoooooo?"

The single word whispered through the darkness of the old control room like the breath of a ghost. And, indeed, the speaker was little more than a ghost of his own yesterdays.

On the flickering screen, in blurry monochrome, Megatron was entertaining an unknown mech whose intensity would indicate more than usual Decepticon instability (Stratus). The sound of their conversation was so horrendously distorted by the old spy monitor as to be incomprehensible, but it looked like an offer was being made, a deal contracted.

"The patient is patient," he added in a low, nervous mutter as he closed the wound. "Patient patients are patently patient."

He was disappointed by Detour's obvious propensity to stand there and watch, meaning he could neither wrench out the few couplings he wanted from the offline Bombshock nor seize the broken corpse and strip it. He glanced longingly at his satchel. At that moment, a sharp pain stabbed through his cerebral cortex and he yelped, dropping his welder.

'Unfortunately, he's probably right,' Dark Walk whispered. 'Who knows what Megatron has done by now? That is to say: who knows what support he's going to need.'

"Very well." Jaggor wheeled and walked out of the medical bay, leaving Solder bemused at how his suggestion was taken.

For his part, though, Solder was now alone and he hurried towards one wall, reaching out a hand; his palm opened and a cable snaked out to an old terminal connection set low against the floor. 'Master?' he sent in a simple binary-encoded pulse.

Solder panicked: There were heavily-armed mechs rounding on him and, from the medical bay he had just quit, the sound of rapid shooting. He positively hurled himself through the narrow gap between the door and jamb, scraping grimy, off-white paint from his back. Wheeling, he leaned his full weight against the door and thrust it shut, plunging the small room into near absolute blackness. Scarecely an astrosecond later, the whole structure shook and, with a grinding lurch, began to descend.

He activated his personal, chest-mounted lighting and, keeping well back from the open front wall of the hoist, logged the number of other doors as they flashed past. The shaft went down, he knew, to some of the basement levels of the fortress and, from there, he would easily be able to access the ancient structure beneath.

>>>>>>>>>>>

"What the frak!" Loastone barked. He opened fire, sending a flurry of small darts winging down the corridor, but Solder plunged out of sight through the door before they reached him and, instead, they impacted against the medical bay door.

"No slag," Mudslinger replied to Blackjack. "Megs didn't look any worse for wear, so I guess our friendly assassin didn't do a very good job of things."

He shrugged. "Anyway, names? Not a problem. I've worked with 'em before, so they're sure to be in the system."

If Highjump is doing his job, anyway.

"They're three Micros like me called Highwire, Powerline and Haul, and a Laser Rod named Jolt who, if I remember right, actually used to work for Megs way back when."

Dropshot gave a sigh, putting one of his guns down as he watched the medbay door swing a little. He looked between Detour and Loadstone.

"You know whoever that was, either Bombshock just emptied a half a clip on them,or thier getting the hell out of here."He put his gun to his unoccupied shoulder and walked back up to the medbay,to see Bombshock back out and the doctor gone.He came back to his fellows.

"Whatever he deserves, Dropshot, he was honest with all he said to us," Loadstone noted with a shrug. "And Bombshock is repaired."

He holstered his gun and tugged at the door he had seen Solder jump through, but it seemed jammed, so he exerted more force. There was an ugly snap and he reeled backwards into the opposite wall, the rust-rotten handle crumbling in his grip.

"It just came off in my hand," he said and grinned self-depreciatingly. "Looks like we won't be following the doctor wherever he's gone."

>>>>>>>>>>

Solder continued to count the shadowy doors as they went past. He was now well over half way to Kolkular's basement levels where the hoist debouched onto a (mostly) long abandoned system of maintenance tunnels. Nervously, he scratched at his jaw, but the small pain of reopening the scab there brought him no comfort. He wanted to get home, to his safe place, to his Master, as quickly as possible.

As he approached the outside of the control room, where a half-dozen mechs were standing outside, he noticed Jaggor. Best to avoid him for now...

Suddenly one of the mech, a blue-and-black-coloured Insecticon leapt at him, shouting something along the lines of "for the glory of Gigatron". Misfire instinctively swung his arm and knocked the mech aside. Aimless transformed into gun mode. Misfire placed the barrel at the fallen mech's head. A range where no one could miss.

No one except Misfire, that is.

The first shot flew down to the mech's chest, and only the second killed the opponent. Disgusted, Misfire gestured at the others looking fearfully at him, "Clean up this mess." Not bad... It could be much uglier... I am improving!

With renewed confidence, he turned on his personal lighting, dispelling the near profound darkness before him as he scurried down the last few deserted corridors to his destination.

Around him, all was sharp-scented, red rust-stained decay; it coated much of the ceiling, the walls and floor where rotting chasses lay piled together. Kicking a disassociated circuit board out of his way, he approached a pair of massive double doors which, alone, seemed to have withstood the aeons and, to judge by the damage on them, major attack. Allowing his lights to dim, he reached up to place a hand against a recognition pad and spoke his name.

"My lord!" Solder released the trembling hand and pulled out his satchel, dumping the various corporeal components at the feet of the massive black figure hunched on the command throne. Quickly rummaging, he selected a small diode and, deftly, reached to open an access plate in Corvus' chest.

The ruined face jerked away, unwilling to watch even with the one, dim red optic. "You were gone too long!"

Solder heard the criticism and shuddered. "I know, my lord. I apologise, but I could not simply run for fear of being shot. How might I serve you if I were terminated?"

"Ah, true."

Justified, Solder finished his quick repair with a flourish. "There. That will ease the pain for a while, until I can install some of these other parts," he advised. As he closed the plate, he regarded the ruined exoform before him: he had tried, but there was no disguising the fact that a third of Corvus' cranium and face had been sheared away by the falling metal spar that had pierced his shoulder and impaled his torso. It had also taken a chunk out of his Spark chamber. By rights, Corvus should be dead; by his hand, Corvus yet lived.

Weasel skimmed a flat scrap of metal accurately into one of the makeshift targets he had set up, the resulting clatter making the guard at the door snap his head round to glare. On the plus side, the guard no longer swung his rifle into business use any longer. That reminded him of how long the media crew had been held and he hissed, "Thiss iss not my idea of cutting edge reporting!"

"Yeah, you said it Weeze," Transcan agreed, high on Transmission's shoulder. "One mealy-mouthed statement from General Hatemonger, a few pictures... and here we are, cooling our servos."

"Perhapss," said Weasel thoughtfully as he set up the target again and retrieved his missile. "We sshould not have demanded to ssee Megatron."

Transcan had the decency to look shamefaced. "Small 'bot - big mouth. My bad. Okay?"

Relay shifted, pacing his datapad beside him where he sat on the floor near Transmission. "Hatemonger's statement is already with the network, as is our recording of the fighting. Dark Walk hugged the ceiling and stayed behind Mudslinger who, after bustling off so quickly, had slowed to what seemed a casual stroll, presumably to avoid drawing attention to himself. There were many units busy in the corridors and Dark Walk's crimson optical slits narrowed; how could anyone tell who had come in with Megatron, who had switched sides - and who was still secretly loyal to Gigatron?

Megatron had, so very typically, displayed considerable hubris.

He felt sudden discomfort and realised he was getting too far from Jaggor. If Mudslinger kept going much further, there would be no choice but to turn back...

Solder wiped oil from his hands with a piece of sumptuous metallic-woven fabric as he surveyed his work so far. Corvus was still slumped on his throne, his one operational hand clasped, claw-like, round the arm. The ancient had, as usual, refused anesthesia; it was too similar to the death he had fought this far.

Selecting his next parts from the heap he had brought back with him, Solder said, "Gleaf has the weapons. I assume he will make use of them soon."

Corvus twisted his face slightly to stare at the medic with his one optic. 'Ah, you sound... disappointed...'

"I didn't get my money," returned Solder with distinct bitterness.

The claw gestured. 'To add to the pretty heap?'

There was, indeed, a glittering pile of currencies and object d'art banked up against the wall Corvus was indicating. There were scatterings of individual shannix right across the floor between it and the throne.

Solder stepped close to Corvus, igniting a surgical welder that sent flickers of dark and light dancing across both their faces. "One can never have enough beautiful things, my lord."

He could see the outermost blast door, which had been, in actual fact, blasted open, and tried to move towards it. Yet even that single step proved impossible. With a shattering groan, Jaggor dropped to his knees.

Across the complex, Dark Walk also came to a halt, regretfully letting Mudslinger pass beyond his reach. His outstretched hand seemed to be thinning, the shadow boiling to vapour, and he snatched it back with a small cry. Beneath him, a passing mech yelped and legged it.

Passing through Kolkular - literally

Dark Walk's first rush took him through several darkened rooms, but also populated corridors, leaving a wake of surprise, shock or confusion, depending on the character of those who observed his passage. Worse affected were those few mechs who were actually in his path, since he swept through them as easily as through insentient metal, leaving them seared with palpable cold internally.

As he neared Jaggor's position, he eased up his speed and became much more aware of the effect he was having, hearing the cries and, just occasionally, the gunfire. He could see Jaggor ahead, rising from his knees, and gratefully closed the short distance between them.

Jaggor accepted his friend with a bare grunt of welcome, too weary to demand explanations.

"Very much so, yes," Megatron told Blackjack. "But not yet. I want you to keep an optic on him. Discreetly. If he knows you're there, he'll probably kill you."

The Decepticon leader turned to Acid Storm. "Greasepit has come into possession of some vital intelligence that can't be allowed to leave the city. Refresh my memory...how many hubs are there in Kaon connecting the city's network to the planetary communications grid?"

"Four," the seeker said without hesitation. "The military hard line here in Kolkular runs directly into Polyhex, and there are three civilian transmitter hubs spread throughout the city. Barring a direct satellite link, no transmissions can leave Kaon without passing through one of those."

Megatron nodded, then told him, "Good. I was hoping you would say that. Take your Rainmakers and destroy them."

"Sir?" Acid Storm wasn't one to question orders, but Megatron's command baffled him.

"I can't risk letting that information fall into unfriendly hands, whether it be Gigatron's, Prime's or someone else's. With the communications hubs destroyed, Greasepit won't be able to transmit it."

"With all due respect, sir, I would prefer to find a less...final way to disable the hubs. We would only have to rebuild them later, after all."

Megatron waved his hand dismissively. "As long as they can't transmit, I'll be happy," he told the seeker. "If he can't transmit the data, Greasepit or one of his co-conspirators will have to physically deliver it to their master." He turned to Jaggor and said, "That's where you come in. Gather whoever you can and form a hunting party. When I give the order, it will be your job to make sure that not a single one of Greasepit's team live to see Kaon's city limits. Understood?"

Within Jaggor, Dark Walk described a grim smile, appreciating the subtle facets of what might seem superficially to be over-simple planning: Total control of the City's communications network to the point of isolationism and the destruction of at least one of the factions opposing his presence here, thus dissuading any others or, at least, promoting dissonance.

Then Dark Walk stopped smiling. However... it is essential to ensure those we recruit for this mission are completely loyal to Megatron. And how can we be certain of that? Or that Megatron won't change his plans if it suits him? Um...

Jaggor listened to Megatron with the utmost respect; this was truly the great leader he had aspired to serve! Rising to salute, he barked, "As you command, lord Megatron!"

At the mention of Bombshock's name, Loadstone suddenly remembered the group's original intention in coming down to this level. When Dropshot had finished talking to Midnight he said, "I need to find that infusion pump or Bombshock won't be in any state to play with his new toys."

Blackjack nodded at Megatron's orders to spy on Greasepit. Have to do this properly. I need to get my... image up again in Megatron's optics. Greasepit will die anyway for this trouble.

Blackjack was needlessly surprised when Megatron ordered Acid Storm to destroy the hubs, but didn't say anything in fear of angering the Decepticon leader further.

He looked at Jaggor and Acid Storm, noting that the two, like him, are immensely loyal to Megatron. Let's just hope whoever Jaggor chooses are similarly loyal to him.

Detour grinned at Loadstone's comment. "Let's tear him apart and take the infusion pump from him."

Midnight looked around before realizing with fear that Detour was gesturing at him. "No. NO! Kill me, but don't turn me to spare parts, please!"

Detour dismissed him, "You're not going to be turned into spare parts. For one, you'll be turned to part of Bombshock, your optic a trophy for Dropshot and anything else would be scavenged by others."

Suddenly everything clicked into place. He remembered his old rivals from the Autobot cause. Three additional non-Decepticons... Of course. It fits into place. the Off Road Patrol. With their camouflaging expertise...

Proudly, Jaggor saluted again and, when Megatron had perfunctorily dismissed them all, followed Acid Storm out of the office. "We must locate Loadstone," Jaggor stated aloud, again ignoring the odd looks this attracted from passing mechs.

'Really? He isn't too at home above ground, you know,' Dark Walk observed.

"I need him to check my recruits," Jaggor pointed out.

Dark Walk figuratively kicked himself; Loadstone had a certain skill in lie-detecting which had been of use in Darkmount, enabling the old Commander to check on the veracity of his crew whenever necessary. And, luckily, Loadstone had been more than happy to keep quiet about individuals' retained loyalties in the face of the new regime...

Without ado, Jaggor opened the Darkmount comm frequency and beamed a loud message: 'Loadstone, status report!'

Far below - almost directly, as it turned out - Loadstone jumped as the demand came through so unexpectedly. "Jaggor!" he bleated.

Weasel's mouth dropped open, his optics boggled, but he kept walking after Transmission and Megatron. At that moment, the sheer horror of being in the company of the most feared Decepticon (the Slagmaker; the Spark-killer; Buckethead etc) was more overwhelming than the sight of a ghoulish unknown!

Jaggor accepted Megatron's words by standing to attention, but still snarled wordlessly at the news crew as they left the holding room and again when Blackjack's message came through, firing off a simple acknowledgement of the information. I was very disappointed to see how far the city had fallen back toward the mix of bourgeois arrogance and extreme poverty that had defined it when I first moved here, and that, combined with its' geographic proximity to Polyhex, made it an ideal territory to add to the Decepticon Empire. And most of the local citizens have met us as liberators, as you suggested."

As they talked, Megatron led them down a spiral staircase, toward the fortress's security section.

"Of course, there are still some holdouts, but I have plans to win them over."

Loadstone, jumping back to his feet after the concussion of the explosion, felt a wash of relief that Jaggor had not opened fire when the others did, particularly given the nature of his guns. Automatically, he started towards Bombshock.

Jaggor swung his twin aim downwards onto Blackjack and snarled, "Idiot! You disobey Megatron's orders!"

At the same time, Dark Walk heard Misfire and affirmed that he could pass through the debris, but wondered, "Why? Is he not supposed to escape?"

Taking advantage of his temporary freedom, Mudslinger dropped down a maintenance shaft, his feet clanging to the deck on the floor below the one he'd just been on. Running as fast as his Micromaster-sized legs would take him, he found a reasonably-safe looking cranny, ducked inside and tried to get his bearings.

Hurry up already, Powertrain, he thought bitterly. I'm doing all the work here!

"Trying to infiltrate my base was a poor choice," he told the prisoner, who responded by spitting a mouthful of oil at Megatron's feet.

"Now, now," Megatron said, "is that any way to treat your host, Spire?"

The Gigatron-loyal Decepticon scowled. "My executioner, more like."

"Hardly," Megatron told him. "In fact, you are free to go...with one caveat, of course."

"Of course," Spire said dryly. "Shall I betray my cause and my comrades now, or will we wait for a stenographer?"

"Sarcasm doesn't become you," Megatron said, a shade of impatience starting to show. "I have extended an invitation to all of the important figures in Kaon who aren't currently aligned with me to come to Kolkular for a summit meeting. Many of them are arriving as we speak. Your leader will already know about this. All I need you to do is let him know that the invitation extends to him as well."

He turned on his heel and walked out, saying as he did so, "The guards will take you to a comm station. If you don't feel like cooperating, I suggest you make yourself comfortable in your cell."

"I can't take credit for that," Megatron told Transmission. "The criminals' disappearance coincided with my return to power, but it was the unrest that set them fleeing, not anything that I did. That should be a lesson to all of us: these criminals that hold some parts of our world hostage are cowards who will run at the mere threat of prosecution." The Decepticon leader shrugged. "They fled because they were afraid of what I might do to them. If Cybertron's other world leaders adopted my anti-crime policies, our planet would be cleared of this scum overnight."

The Decepticon leader tried not to smile as he thought about how his sometimes-ally Black Shadow might react if he saw this interview on the news.

"Hoo, boy," Loadstone sighed, kneeling beside the horrendously over-energised Bombshock. "That's why you needed the infusion pump."

Dark Walk slipped closer to the blockage, experimentally poking one tendril-like arm into it and not sensing the air on the other side. No doubt Kolkular's lack of maintenance had contributed to the collapse; the demolition charges alone would surely not have been enough to do so much damage. Not that he had a problem with the density or depth of the debris - and, after all, the one who had done the damage was meant to be followed further yet.

Then, he noticed the remains of an antique-looking camera dangling from the wall.

With a dry laugh, Dark Walk slipped past the fallen debris and scanned for the mech he recognised from his earlier expedition. However, the only units in sight were several soldiers pounding towards him, although they faltered and several turned to run away again. One of those fleeing sprawled full length, his foot caught in the raised cap of a maintenance shaft seal, and Dark Walk guessed where his quarry had gone.

Sweeping forwards, the wraith plunged head first down through the screaming fallen soldier, through the hatch and into the sharp drop of the conduit lined shaft leading to the floor below.

"Nice fit," Loadstone, guessing where the infusion pump had come from, said to Dropshot. "That'll stabilise the energon flow and our friend here won't even have a hangover." To Bombshock he added, "What happened? Someone dumped the roof on us - same 'ol same 'ol, y'know!"

Jaggor swung both accelerator rifles up and away from Blackjack with a snort. "The target might be more inclined to expose himself and his contacts," he allowed. "But fail Lord Megatron's orders again and I won't hesitate to shoot you!"

There was no explosion; a bright light flared up, magnesium bright; the air was filled with the stench of burning insulation, evaporating metal and bitter polymer fumes; the noise was brief, but thunderous.

Behind him, blast-shield dropping automatically across his optics, Loadstone pushed Bombshock down to cover his visuals, aware that, in his current state, his own systems might not react to the danger quickly enough.

He had been concentrating on Megatron, admiring his foe's eloquence and, grudgingly, his cunning - he should have paid more attention to what was going on in other parts of the fortress.

"My Lord! Master! Master!" Solder frantically tried to operate the switches of a rusty control panel, only to have two snap off uselessly in his grasp. He spun, desperately seeking another way of cutting the feedback Corvus was experiencing. There were several distinct heaps smoldering on the floor before him. His heavy tread dislodged a warped oval which rolled away to clang against the wall, staring back through empty optics that bled their red veneer over blackened faceplates.

"Well, yes, actually. That is the plan."

Mudslinger zoomed past the overconfident Gutcruncher with no more difficulty than he'd found in evading the previous guards he'd run up against. He was almost ready to start celebrating his escape when Dark Walk caught him in his grasp.

Mudslinger felt his entire body flood with an agonizing, ice-cold emptiness as the ghost brushed him, and he wasn't sure what was happening to him. The Micromaster accelerated, then transformed to robot mode and fired several plasma blasts straight through the ethereal, glowing-eyed apparition that was approaching (which ended up aimed at Gutcruncher instead).

Realizing that he was out of his depth, the Micromaster zipped up the conversation he'd overheard while spying on Megatron and quickly burst-transmitted it to his comrades, along with a single-word message.

"That's more than close enough," Megatron told the Pretender, a warning tone in his voice. "Identify yourself and state your business, or face the wrath of Megatron!"

The Decepticon hefted the railgun attached to his right arm to emphasize the threat.

Then he glanced sidelong at Transmission and said, "Is this how your interviews usually end?" in a voice that was more amused than annoyed -- after all, the Micromaster wasn't assaulting one of his troops.

Outside, Kolkular

The Off Road Patrol's shuttle was buffeted by high winds and beset by searing acid rain and hail as the Rainmakers' storm reached full force. Tote struggled to keep the ship level and slowly banked it away from the fortress, but a gust of wind slammed them back the way they'd come.

"Dammit, I'm not going to be able to keep us in the air for much longer," he told Powertrain. "We need to bail out, now!"

"We can't!" Powertrain told him. "We won't have anywhere to go if we do."

"But--"

"Hold it," Highjump cut in. "I'm getting a transmission from Mudslinger. A compressed data file, and one word..." His optics darkened. "Run."

Before either of the other members of the patrol could react, an energy struck the shuttle and it started to drop like a rock.

Acid Storm felt a mild surge of professional pride as he tore apart the Autobot shuttle's engines with his hyperion cannons.

It may not be what I get paid for, but I'm still good at this.
