Once a great city, Kaon has fallen upon dark times. As many different factions jostle for control of the city or simply lash out blindly looking for revenge, Kaon's economy has faltered, her infrastructure has fallen apart, and her people have died terribly. Even with Megatron's dominance a forgone conclusion, no one is giving up, and countless more may die before the city has a chance to return to peace.

Vindicator suddenly became more aware of how dangerous this mission was, the fact that Reverb had spotted other bots off in the distance made him very worried and this mission much more complicated.

“Do they look heavily armed or dangerous? Can you see any insignia? Have they spotted us yet ?" Vindicator barked at Reverb.

It was this kind of moment when Vindicator regretted picking a tank as his alternate form.

He needed to see who these other bots were so he decide how to approach this situation. He couldn't just open fire on these contacts though at this point it seemed like the easiest solution to the problem he now faced. Though doing this would mean he would be disobeying direct orders from Megatron to have any loyal Decepticons he finds join the ranks.

What should I do? he thought to himself.

Tantrum stopped short of Stratus as his front-left leg's joint had collapsed, due to his previous damage from several fights previously in the campaign. "Grr, you could have gotten off easy Stratus" "I was going to kill you quickly, but it looks like we'll be taking our time here." mumbled Tantrum as he transformed into robot mode. The other to Preds followed suit in transforming, not wanting to anger Tantrum any further. "I'll go find Razorclaw perhaps then we can go destroy those clones" said Divebomb flying ahead.

Misfire grunted as the axe hacked off part of his makeshift bludgeon, and another strike chipped his left hand. "So, Straxus cosplayer, you wanna play rough? Let's play rough!" turning to Tantrum, the targetmaster said, "Tantrum, he's the head honcho of the clones that nearly killed us just now! Hold no punches!" the Targetmaster followed suit in delivering an uppercut towards Stratus's stomach.

Detour, for his part, had climbed on top of a bunch of discarded crates and opened fire with his pinprick handguns, aiming towards Stratus' left knee.

There was a soft groan; metal failing...

Jaggor noticed the badly damaged chrome vat shift, spotted that one of the supporting spars was not going to hold much longer. He grabbed up his second rifle from beside the crippled body of Lathe and grunted at his words, which seemed to confirm his conjecture.

"You're coming with me," he said, rising to holster both guns over his back before bending to seize Lathe by the literal scruff of the neck.

And the vat shifted a fraction more...

"How close are they?" Dark Walk gasped to Aimless, referring to the group of Overbites who must surely be on their heels.

Oddly enough, it never occurred to Dark Walk to abandon the exoform. Nor that that exoform was actually an Overbite.

"Say what, 'mission?" Transcan asked, surprised by his friend's sudden remark.

Retro froze in the open doorway, his back-mounted jets emphasising a shudder. "You're reading my appointment log?" he swung, staring at the helicopter. "It's locked!"

Transcan gave a not very reassuring grin. "Transmission's been with me long enough to pick up a few tricks," he said. "So: what about triple-changers?"

"No centralised security system. Main door controlled by single panel access. All other doors have recognition scanners. A bit out-of-date, but effective, yes, messire?" Solder said to Blackjack and Zephyr, hoping to explain any further delay.

The thought of heavily armed enemies worried Vindicator, the last thing he needed was to get into a shoot out. Though Reverb had only spotted a few of them he wouldn't be surprised if they had back up.

He also became concerned at how they appeared to be loading up equipment or weapons. He didn't know what they were loading but the fact that they were armed was bad enough. This meant they may have something valuable. If they had raided the area then they could have stolen communications equipment from Hub#2.

He had to find out what those bots were doing without putting Reverb or Relay in harms way.

"I suggest you land if you don't want to be spotted and shot at." Vindicator said to Reverb as he transformed.

"We will move through those ruins on foot so we can get closer to them with out being spoted. Do you have any weapons on you?" He asked Reverb.

"Oh f-" Detour ducked down the crates as they were engulfed in the stream of flame that Stratus expelled.

Misfire, meanwhile, had thicker armour and the flame didn't injure him other than melting his paintjob and fusing the circuity in his open wounds recently inflicted by the clones and the axe. "Not going away that easily! Divebomb, Acid Storm, let's jet!" the Targetmaster transformed into jet mode and rocketed off after Stratus. One afterburner sputtered out smoke, and the Decepticon seemed to limp in the air as he pursued Stratus.

"Who?" Solder asked, watching the log-light blink off and stay off. He looked again at Blackjack, his confusion unfeigned. "Ransack? Newsmechs? I can ask, Retro, yes - but I can also read the log...?"

~~~
Retro did not like what this Transmission was hinting at. "No shranix to spare for upgrades," he said from the doorway, longing to bolt - not daring to. Perhaps if he offered some information? "There used to be a contingent of triple-changers in Kaon; result of some early experimentation by Lord Shockwave, I understand. Big, powerful units. Heavy wear on their transforming cogs left a lot of them needing regular Cybteronium resurfacing and they used to come here."
The medic shuffled backwards, putting a bit of space between himself and the two interrogators.
"You'd best talk to Lathe. He looks after them. Although..." Retro frowned, stared down at his feet for a moment. "I haven't seen Lathe in a while. Um, I need to go and open the security doors..."
Transcan nodded, dismissed Retro with a wave of one small hand.
"What's so interesting about triple-changers?" he asked Transmission. "Okay, these probably have an interesting history, but so what? They've never come out of Kaon to fight the Autobots."
Reverb had been right these scavengers were loyal to no one. They had no marking suggesting they belonged to any factions. Trying to bargain with them wouldn't be an option.
As he moved further into the building he could see the Communications Hub was just across the road from where he was. Looking back he motioned for Reverb and Relay to follow him into the building.
"Stay low and stay quiet."He said quietly to Reverb and Relay.
Relay had had a lot of experience of creeping and hiding; when the 'Cons attacked and you carried no real weapons, staying down and staying safe was the best option... But he could put up a fight if he had to. Blaster had made sure all his communications mechs received basic hand-to-hand and simple weapons training.
"Read the log," Solder muttered and wasted no time locking in. Same old protocols. Retro would never consider changing anything and, no doubt, would never bother wasting hard lucre on replacing practical programming that still worked.
Normal stuff. Lots of boring normal stuff. The Hospital treated a lot of damaged mechs after Megatron's initial attack on Kaon (was it that long ago? almost ancient history!), mainly Decepticons, but a whole load of citizens. Quite a few still seemed to be on the register. Odd. Probably Retro forgot to remove them when they left or... Stores that low? Wow... Nine triple-changers? Where did they come from? They booked to see Lathe... Lathe? Ah, the medical student! The accounts are looking bad...
Dark Walk took a half dozen more shots in the back and he staggered. In normal circumstances, the Overbite would have instigated a self-repair sub-routine and dropped out of action until the its systems stabilised, but Dark Walk had no inclination to stop. And, besides, he had quite simply forgotten about such corporeal things as repairs!
From up ahead came a tremendous crash. "What!" he cried. Having no option, he continued towards the inner foundry area and hoped that Aimless, who had overtaken him, would find out what was happening.
" I would imagine that there is a locker similar to what you speak of," He replied to Relay. " But like I said I do not know this area well so I do not know it's location or if there even is a locker to find. "Here’s the plan. I want you two to try and sneak as close to the communications hub as you can without being spotted." he gave a pause to make sure that they still followed what he was saying.
"Unfortunately I will not be able to follow you guys into the communications hub. If I tried to follow you we run a very high risk of being spotted and I cannot let you guys become targets. So while you two are getting into the hub and getting what you need I will be causing a distraction for you guys and hopefully drawing any scavengers away from the hub." he stopped again and took a look up to make sure the scavengers hadn't notice their presence.
"Do not enter the hub until you are sure that no one inside. I don't want you guys to engage the enemy unless you have no other choice. When you have what you need radio me a message and we will make a fast retreat."
Blackjack had came to the same conclusion as Solder -- that none of the bodies could be used as spare parts. "Stupid drug-dealers." Blackjack muttered.
Blackjack turned to a couple of Decepticons behind him. "Dispose of these Empties. It's not conductive to have dead bodies around a sterile environment."
Turning back to Solder, Blackjack frowned, "Don't know any drug which could cause this sort of reaction. Any ideas, doctor? In case we encounter it?"
"This is true little one although I think you may find out the meaning sooner than I. Jerking his thumb at the direction they came from, Detour remarked, "Megatron's back at Kaon, y'know? Wreaking vengeance by flying away from him... real smart, I tell you. Real smart." Detour didn't know what he could do against Stratus, as his pinprick lasers wouldn't do much damage. But he could stall for time. Or better yet, enrage him and cause him to turn back to Kaon.
The Micromaster grunted as he shifted to a more secure position with his magnetic clamps. "Funny position we're in, no? Tell you what, I'm dying to get back at you after the incident in the Tri-Vee studios." the Micromaster grunted as he tried to think of something- anything- that he could use against the enemy.
Misfire came online with a jolt of pain. The pale red Decepticon shooed the little mecha-bug nibbling on his broken afterburners. Misfire looked at his broken body. His wrist was broken -- thank Primus for neural pain dampeners -- his afterburners were overheated and otherwise toast, his exostructure was dented, he was aching all over and he was weaponless.
The Targetmaster was also alone. Acid Storm and the Predacons had gone ahead and chased after Stratus without him.
Misfire cursed as he painfully stood upright, and with difficulty, limped back towards the foundry. During the slow and painful journey, Misfire reflected on what he had done. How bloody useless he was. Try and do as he might, he just can't shoot straight. Some Targetmaster he was. Practice makes perfect, they say. Misfire had been practicing for millenia, but he hadn't even come close to perfect. Pit, he is only a borderly acceptable gunner!
The Decepticon gritted his teeth as he dragged himself, shame and pain wallowing inside him. Misfire briefly considered suicide, but he knew he couldn't shoot straight to end his life, and was afraid that it would cause him more pain.
He joined Megatron's Decepticons to get away from his 'comrades', Slugslinger and Triggerhappy, to have a new start. What a joke! How can he have a 'new start', when he never started being anything noteworthy in the first place? The Targetmaster walked for Primus knows how long, until he heard the sounds of gunfire. Misfire sighed as he dragged himself towards the sound of conflict, hoping to immerse himself in battle and forget about how useless he was...
Doesn't matter what you do, they'll hunt you down and kill you. Oh, there's that Acid Storm fella too. "I have been... out of the loop on such things," Solder pointed out to Blackjack. "I could autopsy one of these units, find out more...?"
The massive door suddenly gave out a double thump and, to a certain a mount of creaking (possibly indicating wear and tear to the hinges), opened outwards. Stormfire, standing nearest, stepped back a few paces and so was the first to see the nondescript medic standing there:
He was pale, a slovenly and stained white; he stood no taller than the Seeker's shoulder and was lightly built. Two stubby wings, each bearing the Decepticon purple medical symbol, stood out awkwardly from behind his arms. His feet were modified jets, although clearly not powerful enough for combat.
"Retro!" Solder exclaimed, hurrying over.
Misfire trudged on, the synapse blockers causing him to ignore the pain from his damaged left hand, his dented wings and his trashed afterburners. But he could still feel the numbness and a feeling of distant pain. He heard the gunfire subsiding, and he knew that whoever fired those shots had found their target. Oh, how Misfire envied them!
The Targetmaster stumbled around the corner, finding Jaggor and a mass of dead Overbites. The Targetmaster's azure eyes glowed with happiness at finding another Decepticon — one he knew, to boot. "Commander Jaggor!" he cried out loud. "I can show you where Stratus went... in no position to take him down but probably- you- you can...."
Aimless hovered out of his hiding spot and transformed into Nebulan mode and immediatey scampered towards his larger partner. "Misfire! That's the last time you're leaving me behind like that."
"Can it, fleshbag." Misfire's icy tone, as well as the derogatory term used for organics, caused Aimless to stop dead in his tracks. Misfire's optics narrowed. "Don't give me all that crap. There's a reason you're called Aimless, you know. You're part of the reason why we haven't taken down the enemy yet."
"Hey, hey, cool down, bro! Where's the love gone?" Aimless stammered, as he backed up from the massive metallic monster looming above him. Despite living all this while with him, Aimless never noticed how... big Misfire was. How he could crush the Nebulan if he wanted to. Meekly, Aimless squeaked as Misfire scooped him up with his good hand and shoved the Nebulan into his cockpit.
"Make yourself useful and do repairs on me." Afraid to anger his Targetmaster 'partner' anymore, Aimless set work on doing just that, all the while wondering what had gone into Misfire...
Meanwhile, Misfire turned to Jaggor, awaiting orders to be given.
"An autopsy? Yes, yes... you can do it if you want to-". Blackjack snapped around to attention when the door creaked, his left hand darting towards the handle of the mini-shotgun magno-clamped on his waist, while his right hand swiftly pulled out a micro-serrated steel playing card from a compartment on his wrist, but relaxed when Solder recognized the medic, who was, apparently, called Retro.
Blackjack smiled at realising the doors have been opened for them after the long wait. "His master is dead." Blackjack said flatly to Retro. "And so will anyone who defies the Decepticon cause." There was, of course, a hidden undertone that implied the same would happen to Retro if he didn't cooperate, but Blackjack's tone made the implication vague.
Blackjack smiled as he walked up to Retro, "Forgive me, where are my manners? Greetings, good medic. Thank you for opening the doors for us... I am Blackjack, de facto leader of... this." the Micromaster indicated the mass of Decepticons in the room, ferrying wounded and resources into the hospital. "Your hospital is a solid fortress, no? We would like to use it as a... fortress of sorts."
After a pause that no doubt would cause Retro to worry, Blackjack continued, "No, not as a war ground, but merely as a temporary base until Kolkular could be rebuilt. After all, many of us are injured and dying, and where else would we camp? This hospital is well-built, and my men will protect it with their lives, if it ever comes to that."
To cap it all, this little cut-off wanted the Hospital...! There might be some... problems, but there might also be some advantages in agreeing...
"I'll be happy to help any injured; the building is at your command. It's mostly empty," he said. "There are currently five occupied wards with forty-two patients, and I have fifteen drones and nine medics in my team; er, eight, since Lathe disappeared."
Should he have said that? He burbled to cover up.
"We don't have much in the way of supplies. Only stores for the most basic repairs. Two theatres for placing the seriously wounded into controlled stasis. You don't... don't have Energon, do you?"
"Disappeared?" Blackjack murmured when the medic mentioned someone called 'Lathe', but spoke no further — after all, he did not want to cause Retro to get upset just yet. Soon after that, however Retro asked about energon, and Blackjack smiled. "Actually we do, although not much." The Micromaster jerked his thumb towards a few stacks of half-empty energon cubes that a couple of Decepticons were guarding.
"We also have salvaged spare parts and medical supplies." Galestorm chipped in.
Vindicator looked over and could see that Relay and Reverb were in position. This is where things become difficult he thought to himself. He did one last check on his weapons if they failed now things wouldn't end well.
Vindicator quickly transformed into his tank mode. He floored it through cover and began driving directly at the group of Scavengers as fast as he could.
He had to draw their attention away from Relay and Reverb.
When the Scavengers were in range he began blasting away at them with his laser cannons and machine gun. As he drove across the open ground he could see that the Scavengers were stunned at the sudden attack and did not have a proper defense ready.
His surprise assault was working so far though he didn't expect it things to stay this way once the scavenger realized what was happening.
As Vindicator continued firing he hoped that anyone in the communications hub would be drawn out and that Relay and Reverb would find what they needed quickly.
Following Detour's homing beacon, Acid Storm eventually came close enough that he could see the fight between the Micromaster and Stratus. He smiled when he saw how much damage his smaller colleague had managed to inflict on their enemy, but the situation Detour was in now wasn't very smile-worthy.
Vindicator continued to fire at the scavengers. He was trying to do his best to keep them pinned down but the shock of his surprise attack was wearing off.
He was able to see that they were firing back at him in a more coordinated manner as to draw his fire. He couldn't keep this up much longer.
His plan must have worked, he thought to himself. He didn't remember there being this many enemies when he commenced his attack.
As he fired at a scavenger who was taking pot shots at him he noticed that one of them was trying to get on his flank.
Acting quickly Vindicator drove in that direction that the scavenger was headed. As he got closer he transformed and charged that scavenger. Firing his machine gun and powering up his energy blade incase he was forced into close combat.
He saw that the scavenger began to fall back after taking hits from a few rounds. But doing this Vindicator had left his right side open to attack and was hit a few times in the side.
Luckily they had just been glancing hits.
Not wishing to risk any more damage Vindicator ran for cover. He began to reload his weapon not wishing to say down for long in order to prevent the scavengers from surrounding him.
He fired another barrage at Stratus, this time aiming for the larger Transformer's engine exhausts. If he could damage one of them sufficiently, Stratus would have to stay grounded or risk crashing...pretty much like Acid Storm's current situation.
Retro kept his optics straight ahead, ostentatiously watching out for Widget. "He... disappeared."
"Look, he just disappeared! He didn't leave, but he's nowhere on-site. I had a search made."
Vindicator had managed to defend himself in hand to hand combat, but this had left him open to attack.
When the grenade exploded he had nowhere to hide. Vindicator tried to shield himself from the blast a best he could. But in this open area there was little he could do.
The explosion from the grenade sent Vindicator flying through the air. He landed hard on the ground not far from where the grenade had exploded.
As he got back to his feet he grunted in pain looking down he could see the servos inside his leg.
The blast had blown a large portion of his armour off his left and leg as well as causing damage to his left arm. His machine gun had also taken a large amount of damage from the explosion it was all but useless now.
Not that it matter he was out of ammo for it anyways.
Vindicator tried to run as fast as he could to cover before the scavengers could open fire but his damaged leg made it very difficult to run.
Vindicator hoped that Relay and Reverb wouldn’t be much longer. Being as damaged as he was he wasn’t sure how much longer he would be able to last.
When Vindicator got to cover he began to open fire back at the enemies with his shoulder mounted cannons luckily they were still in working condition.
Blackjack glanced around the corridor to look at the expressions of Solder, Retro and Widget, slightly disturbed by the silence between the medics. The Micromaster shrugged and opened a comm to Galestorm. "Report."
"Our forces have been spread out around the hospital, with additional security measures being undertaken to prevent incursions and sabotage. I've sent Reflector units to search for any bombs in the building." came the reply from the Seeker in the administrative wing above.
Blackjack nodded, pleased at the Seeker's efficiency. But there was something missing. That dry humour and sarcasm that would come if one of his Sports Car Patrol member had replied instead of the Seeker. "Good work." Blackjack replied. "Keep it up. Inform me if any new troops approach."
"Affirmative."
Blackjack clicked off the comms and watched the medics, and shrugged. Idly he wondered where the rest of his team were. Detour no doubt had been caught up in whatever front line in Kaon, fighting alongside Misfire, Jaggor and the Predacons and all the rest. Blackjack found it ironic that the most cowardly of the group was the only one in a battlezone. Road Hugger, meanwhile, had gone and gotten himself upgraded was no doubt thriving with the Combaticons in Protihex. Blackjack felt happy for his former second-in-command, and was glad that things hadn't went sour between them despite their separation.
Hyperdrive, though, was another matter. Road Hugger had told him that the psychopath had left the Combaticons and joined Gigatron's forces of Decepticons. Blackjack sighed at his uncontrollable, hot-tempered ex-comrade. Had Hyperdrive forgotten it was one of Gigatron's officers who had thrown them out? Backstab, that threacherous suck-up...
Blackjack let out a weary sigh as he allowed himself to settle down on a piece of debris which might have been part of a living transformer in the past. Things are falling apart...
Retro kept his head down, walking beside Widget who was steering the 'formport with over-diligent silence. "The mortuary..," he mumbled.
"I know where the mortuary is," Solder snarled as quietly as he could. "I do not intend to park this jet in it - need an autopsy room and we've passed two..."
"Shut up, Solder!" Retro returned a little louder than he intended. He gave a start, glanced behind at Blackjack and added much more reasonably, "You know you're going to need room to get everyone in and the main teaching theatre will provide it."
"That... is acceptable."
Solder mused on Retro's somewhat erratic behaviour, not at all the character of the medic he once knew; the few times he had come here with Corvus' permission to source rare components, Retro had seemed quite normal, more normal than himself, actually. However, in retrospect, Solder realised that every time his fellow medic had never admitted him into the Hospital proper, only the tarnished foyer.
And, come to think about it, except for Blackjack's troops and their small party, the whole place was unnaturally silent. Where were the other staff members and the patients?
Things were not adding up. There were no maintenance drones in the corridors going about their pre-programmed schedules, so why should any be keeping the much less important teaching theatre usable?
The sight of Stratus' headless body intrigued Dark Walk. The whole - sans caput, of course - was an exact duplicate of the exoform wrecked by Jaggor in the foundry. It was the smell...
He remembered how it hung around, cloying his olfactory receptors long after he was certain he had scrubbed it from his dermis. Time and time, he had resorted to industrial cleansing fluid, discolouring his once pristinely white armour, abrading his purple emergency symbols.
His tactile sensors screamed at every sting, every scuff of the wire pad, until their feedback became reassuringly familiar. He craved the pain; it was his atonement, just as the repeated opening of the sensitive nodes in his neck and under his forearm plating was meant for Corvus...
Solder fell against the door frame, fingers raking his barely-healed scars.
Stormfire, who had been tracking Retro's blithely innocent walk across the room, blinked his optics back to normal operation. "Uh, you okay?" he asked.
Misfire shoved a smallish Decepticon who had gotten in his way rudely as he and Dark Walk followed Jaggor, who was bounding up the elevators. "He's fast." Aimless quipped. "Real fast."
Misfire tried to activate his jet rockets, but they sputtered and refused to ignite. With a sigh of disgust, Misfire continued opening fire on the surroundings, dissuading most of the crowd from disturbing their pursuit.
Detour, meanwhile, whooped in joy as Jaggor came to view. The Micromaster kept a steady stream of pinprick lasers at Stratus. "Commander, the target's that little guy over there. Watch out, he hypnotizes people who watch Tri-vee. You... don't, do you?"
Reverb jinked toward the spot where Relay was sitting, turning his attention in the right direction just in time to see the large gun-toting figure pop up in front of his...teammate? Comrade? Friend? Reverb supposed it didn't really matter much what term he used.
Raising his cryo-rifle, he snapped off a few poorly-aimed shots in the aggressor's general direction.
"You get away from him!"
He sincerely hoped that his voice sounded more intimidating to Relay's foe than it did to him.
He turned around just in time to see Reverb firing at another bot.
He had been foolish to leave Reverb and Relay so far back, If something happened to them he didn't know what he would do , let alone what Megatron would say if the communications were unable to be brought back online because of his failure.
Taking careful aim with his laser cannons Vindicator fired a few shots at the bot the Reverb was firing at.
The teaching theatre was 'in the round', which meant there were tiers of standing circled round a central well where several pieces of medical tech equipment squatted on caster-type wheel bases around a bare silver table. There was the one entrance/exit and, opposite it, an emergency access.
Retro was making his way back from the control panel set beside the other door. "Push the 'formport to the centre," he called to Zephyr. He reached one of the pieces of equipment and flicked some switch on it before going on to stand beside the table.
"Schematics for deconstruction," said an anonymous machine voice. "Drone - service drone - mechform I - mechform II..."
At the door, next to Stormfire, Solder pulled himself together, acutely aware his behaviour might lead to questions. He entered the room tensely, trying to repress his olfactory responses. The Seeker fell in behind him.
"Tri-vee, pah!" Jaggor spat contemptuously. He followed the line of Detour's lasers and saw the real Stratus for the first time.
Bellowing laughter, he swung one rifle up...
Darkwalk reached the head of the escalator and took in the slightly ridiculous scene, but he did not laugh.
For one thing: he had already decided that Stratus was more than he appeared. For another thing: he wanted Stratus functional for examination to find out just what he was.
"Jaggor - no!" he shouted.
Incidentally, he missed the warning about the tri-vee, which was a shame.
Zephyr scowled when Retro ordered him to do such a menial task, but he complied nevertheless. From the corner of his optics, he observed Stormfire and Solder.
"What does this 'formport do, anyway?" The Seeker asked nonchalantly, as he pushed the 'formport to the center.
When the anonymous voice spoke out, Zephyr managed to keep himself from jumping. Instead, he called out with a calm he didn't believe he could muster, "What does that mean?"
Blackjack screeched to a halt when Widget abruptly stopped. The Micromaster transformed and immediately singled out Megatron among the crowd. Blackjack poked Widget's leg and pointed at the Decepticon leader. "That's Megatron. Obey his orders- your life depends on it."
Without seeing the porter's reactions to his words, the Micromaster trotted up to Megatron and gave a sharp salute. "Lord Megatron." Blackjack gave an inward sigh to himself. The motley crew he had collected had been smart enough to continue working on their task, though the tension in the air was thick.
Galestorm, meanwhile, as the guard was trained to do, began to look around for any mechs who might want to take the opportunity to shoot Megatron.
Detour kept opening fire on Stratus, but with a lower rate now that his weapons are beginning to overheat again. "Kill it!" The Micromaster shouted, all concerns for his personal safety eclipsed by his the spur of the moment.
Misfire, for his part, stood beside Dark Walk, opening fire with Aimless and his laser ion rifle, sending bluish-purple bolts of laser fire flying towards Stratus. Most of the shots missed their targets, but they exploded near enough to Stratus that it would limit the Brainmaster's movements. "Why no?" The Targetmaster asked Dark Walk. "He's our enemy!" The Targetmaster let all the pain he suffered in his three previous encounters with Stratus to remind him of why Stratus must pay. Detour grunted as he transformed into robot mode beside (under, whatever) Jaggor. He did this just before Stratus' transmission played over the intercom. "Damn!" Turning to his larger comrades, Detour began to explain frantically, "This guy controls a huge chunk of tri-vee broadcasting, and have inserted sublimal messages. If you're a tri-vee junkie, those three words will be enough to make you submit to his will."
Misfire shrugged at Detour's explanation. "I hate tri-vee. Radio's so much better... no pictures to distract you when you're flying..." he shrugs, "My systems are still haphazard, so hypnotism won't do much good."
Aimless, on the other hand, have gone completely mute after the broadcast.
Blackjack waved his hand to show the numerous injured Decepticons on the area. "Besides, many of your men require medical assistance, and this hospital is built like a fortress." Blackjack scowled, "Although in terms of smell and tidiness, it could've been much better..."
Widget stood next to Blackjack without the slightest sign of terror at Megatron's presence; his red optics were as dull as ever above the blank faceplate. He waited until the talking had stopped and then said, "Reporting for duty as instructed, Lord."
Not very inventive, perhaps, but pithy and, in his own way, Widget meant the words to a shade.
"'Exo-form-transport," Retro explained for Zephyr's benefit, and there was a trace of sarcasm in his vocals. He indicated that the Seeker should draw the floating trolley alongside the waiting table. "To move bodies. The other equipment is simply listing available dis-assembly projections; useful during lectures."
Yes, thought Solder. But why list drones?
"... mechform Alpha-type IV - mechform Beta-type I - mechform..."
"Stop!" Retro ordered and the machine fell silent. He fidgeted, then said, "Solder, you're going to need tools. There are several compacs in the racks beyond the door there, if you want to get one?"
He was pointing at the second door.
Stormfire, catching up with Zephyr, asked, "You're blocking the emergency exit? Isn't that against standard building regulations?"
Retro snorted. "The racks are set into the walls - if there is an emergency, there are kits to hand. It's standard in hospitals."
Solder, who knew that anyway, nodded and started to walk away from the small gathering.
Jaggor, hearing Dark Walk's protest, pulled his shot, which went wide of Stratus and gouged a massive hole in the upper level wall, removing a poster extolling the virtues of Grabbit's High Grade and letting in light from the street beyond. "Why?" he demanded of his friend.
Dark Walk was not, however, listening to Jaggor; he was listening for Stratus' commands as were many commuters who, rather than fleeing, had stopped in their tracks.
At his side, Detour was gabbling something about subliminal messages embedded in tri-vee broadcasts. Jaggor groaned inwardly; Dark Walk, with not much to do except scare the troops into line, was a science programme junkie...
Misfire sighed as he reached his hand down, instinctively trying to subspace the Nebulan, then thought better of it. "Great. Hey, shorty... how do you reverse the effects of hypnotism?"
Detour snapped back at his larger companion, "Do I look like a scientist to you?"
Misfire sighed, pulled the ammo pack on Aimless' side and subspaced that instead. "We must kill it." Misfire said as he continued opening fire on Stratus. He tried to transform, but his damaged circuits prevented him to do so. Scowling, he resumed the chase on foot.
Stormfire smiled ruefully and echoed Zephyr's shrug. "Let's get this over with," he suggested. "The sooner Solder finds out what drug killed this lost Spark, the better. If it was a drug...?"
"No viruses here," Retro broke in, fussing over the defunct Seeker. His hands were actually shaking, so he busied them. "We have a sweeper programme, you see. He might just have been so low on fuel; a lot of the druggies come here... looking for fuel. But we never have quite enough."
"There will be fuel now," Stormfire promised, but he knew he was lying, for it was doubtful Megatron would bother providing for any patients beyond fighting status.
Solder, across the room, was still disconcerted by the scent of dead metal, which had grown as he approached the emergency exit. He shook his head, twitched.
There were the expected medical compacs in their racks, but where there should have been at least sixty-four (to meet regulations) Solder unconsciously counted only nine. Not that the rest of the tall racking was empty - oh, no...
Parts. Hundreds of parts. Jumbled and tumbled. The valuable among the unusable. Meticulously cleaned cogs and joints; burnt-out printed circuit boards coated in dried fluids. Plastis panels, carbon-fibre tendons, pseudo-vertebrae, rotors, pumps.
Solder stared, shaking. With such treasures he could have kept Corvus functional for megavorns! With such treasures, he had.
The semi-dismantled body struts of a standard cleaning drone clattered to the stained floor as he lurched forwards, sobbing, pulling pieces off at random, discarding them for other items in an absolute frenzy.
Inexorably, Dark Walk approached, still firing and Jaggor could only respond by using one of his own rifles at stupidly close range...
A whole swathe of the area cleared; an awful lot of commuters were vapourised. So was the Overbite.
When the smoke cleared, a shadow began to coalesce around two red glows as Dark Walk re-integrated. Jaggor seemed to bow, his left hand clutching at his damaged chestplate.
And then, perhaps, I might be one of the few who get to return to Polyhex? Blackjack considered, but didn't voice it out loud.
He did, however, sent a coded text transmission to Stormfire and Zephyr: 'Question the medics about the location of Ransack and the neutral news reporters, please. Megatron will be annoyed if we didn't do anything about them.'
Blackjack watched as Megatron questioned Widget, and allowed himself to smile slightly. He never liked medics, considering the few odd ones he had encountered recently, and it's refreshing to see a medic (or at least a unit affiliated with medics) being interrogated. Not that the porter was bright enough to show fear, though...
"It's not the Autobot." Blackjack answered Megatron's question, for the sake of his reputation and the relatively innocent hospital workers, if not for the sake of the porter. "Retro's the chief medic of the hospital. Very old, but definitely Decepticon. Opened the door for us."
Solder did stop at Zephyr's command, turning to snarl, hugging a shiny Energon pump in his arms. "Mine," he hissed and bolted.
Given that the passageway in front of him was open and the way behind cluttered with the parts he had raked off the shelves in such abandon, he would get a fairly good head start and, of course, he knew the hospital layout.
Stormfire pressed Retro about the newsbots and the medic replied, "They're in the non-urgent case wing. I can take you to them?"
"Yes, do that," Stormfire replied, glancing towards Zephyr's back as his moldbrother chased Solder.
In direct contradiction to Widget's statement, Transcan sat on Transmission's shoulder and bemoaned the fact that they were totally lost. Jaggor groaned, grasping at the wall in an attempt to haul his glowing form upright. This exposed his chestplate; there was a gaping hole, dark and fluid-streaming, clearly visible. Using his rifle so close in a confined space had been a mistake and, coupled with the unseen internal damage he had taken earlier, had opened him up. Also, Misfire's ill-aimed shooting had punctured his back, which had not helped at all.
Zephyr growled as Solder turned tail and fled. The Seeker ignited his jet boots, not caring much for the impact it might have with what fuel might be in the air, and shot off after Solder. However, the cluttered parts Solder had left behind slowed his fairly wide body, and he grunted as his wings and other Seeker peripherals snagged on some random objects. Forced to go on foot, Zephyr began his pursuit of the little medic.
"Damn right you've blacked out. You've been hypnotised, that's what." Detour replied to Dark Walk. "Sublimal messages in Tri-Vee. That's how that spawn of a glitch plans to rule the Decepticons."
As the tense Micromaster ranted, Misfire attempted to reply to the wraith's query. "Your body? Your... body? Oh, the Overbite? It got blown up when you tried to attack Jaggor..."
However, both Decepticons wisely shut up when Jaggor spoke. Detour blanched when the smoke escaped Jaggor's mouth. "This isn't good this isn't good this isn't good..." the Micromaster repeated, his self-preservation senses kicking in. The Micromaster began to take several steps back.
Misfire, meanwhile, turned from Dark Walk to Jaggor, not comprehending what was happening. "How- what- how can we help?"
Without pause, Solder ran. He burst out of the other end of the emergency passage and into one of the many empty wards. Another open doorway ahead and he was through it, plunging into temporary gloom out of which several querulous, but powerful voices called variants of: "Who's there?"
Ignoring them, Solder rushed on, veering right.
There were three mechs in the corridor and he charged right at them...
"Whoa!" exclaimed Transcan.
Widget blankly accepted Megatron's threat. "Should I call Retro?" he asked, then waited to be told if he should... 'Responsibility' was not in Widget's handbook.
"Back!" Dark Walk's essence swirled as he gestured for Misfire to retreat, too; Detour had already begun to move. "If the field collapses..."
"I can't stop it!" Jaggor threw his head up and back, contorting with indescribable pain.
To Misfire, softly and clearly, Dark Walk said, "Run. Don't stop and don't look back. I have no idea how large the subspace rift will be - it's been held back for so long." Then he added with a rueful laugh: "If you ever see Shockwave, tell him he was right about the inversion gateway calculations. Tell him I, Stroll, was wrong. Tell him... I have paid for my arrogance...
The trip back to Communications Hub #1 had taken far less time than Vindicator thought it would.
At any rate Vindicator was glad to be back in allied territory.
Now all he had left to do was to wait for communications to be restored. For once he wasn't feeling uneasy about the pace the technicians were working at. Mainly because he had his own self repairs to tend to.
Vindicator sat in a corner and began to clean his wounds.
He was no medic so he wouldn't be able to completely repair all the damage.
As for his machine gun he wouldn't be able to repair it here. He would need to scavenge parts but there was nothing he could use in his current location.
"How much longer do you think it will take to get communications back up?" Vindicator asked Reverb.
"Damn." he whispered softly to himself. He had finished calculating the risk versus benefit ratio of the entire situation, and the odds were not good at all...
"Crap. Crap crap crappity crap." Detour cursed as Dark Walk told them to run. The little yellow Micromaster folded upon himself, transformed into his car mode. Joints creaked and tires squealed where his autorepair systems hadn't worked on, but he forced them to go.
Misfire, meanwhile, took a time to give Jaggor and Dark Walk (or was it Stroll?) a sharp salute. "It has been an honour, gentlemech... farewell." the Targetmaster said, voice laden with emotion. Misfire had fought beside the duo for so long...
The Targetmaster then turned around and transformed, willing his engines to push him along. One sputtered, but the hasty repair job Aimless had done on them proved sufficient for him to take off, and to scoop Detour along the way. Aimless sat dazed in the cockpit.
And then the trio left Jaggor and Dark Walk, no doubt for them to either solve the problem or die screaming.
Transcan elbowed Transmission in the right audial. "Watch out!"
Solder jinked in the hope that Zephyr would miss him, but the Seeker managed to grab his knees and brought him down right at the feet of the huge heli-transformer. In an instant, Solder struggled round to viciously smash the pump he held into Zephyr's face...
~~~

Widget ambled away to the main desk and put out a call for Retro.

Both Stormfire and Retro were grateful for the interruption. They had not found the newsmechs in the ward where Solder said he had left them and they had been arguing over what to do next.

"I have to go," Retro said, moving towards the door.

Stormfire nodded resignedly. Megatron would not be happy and an unhappy Megatron was not a pleasant prospect.

Dark Walk watched the others leave. "Just the two of us, Jaggor," he said, floating closer to the huge mech. "Like it was on Charr. Only this time..." He managed a small, taut laugh. "Only this time, you are the main generator and there's no back up..."

Jaggor, fists clenched, grated an equally bitter laugh through his clenched dental arches. His whole form was incandescent now, shimmering and shifting unsteadily, as unsteadily as Dark Walk's ghostliness. Yet there was no heat.

"So ridiculous for it to end like this," Dark Walk went on, gliding ever nearer Jaggor. In truth, this was no choice of his; there was an inexorable pull dragging him forwards. "We should have stayed at the Smelting Pool."

"Ambition," Jaggor growled.

"Farewell ambition! My ambitions started this and now..." Dark Walk threw up his smoky arms, beginning to shred into Jaggor's chestplate. "It ennnddddsssssssssssssssss...."

There was an implosion. It should have been accompanied by a suitable sound effect, but there was only an all-encompassing silence. Light and darkness mixed, swirled, dragged in lumps of masonry and the remains of the commuters, and disappeared with one last flash.

There was silence.

Detour, having strapped himself in beside the catatonic Aimless, fully expected the Targetmaster to be thrown out due to the force of the explosion which undoubtedly would come from the Dark Walk/Jaggor thing. But there was silence.

"What the fark?" Detour yelled at Misfire. "Where's the big badda boom? Did they stop the reaction?" the Micromaster asked, faint hope in his voice.

Misfire's answer was to do what would be termed as 'drifting' had he been a rally car instead of a jet, and shot back towards the location of where they last saw Jaggor and Dark Walk, witnessing as lumps of masonry and unlucky commuters were sucked into subspace by the implosion. "Bloody hell!" Misfire growled.

Detour stared at the scene, jaws hanging open. Aimless, having waken from his stupor, did the same.

Transcan would, in normal situations, plump for the underdog, but, seeing as they were in a Decepticon controlled area and both parties were Decepticons and if one them had done something bad enough to warrant being chased down... "Scrag the runner, 'Mission!" he yelled.

But Solder had to get free of Zephyr. He fought with the viciousness of a cornered retrorat and, being a medic, a certain amount of unconscious skill. In instants, he broke the Seeker's hold and, regaining his feet, staggered against the corridor wall, glaring and growling, hugging the pump.

At last, Ransack rallied enough to ignore his unspoken nausea and respond to something. However, with his gyroscopic control still out of kilter (hence the nausea), his lunge went hopelessly wide, so that he banged into the wall next to Solder.

"We need to help out the Seeker." Misfire told Detour. "At least we could use his help in searching for Stratus — I've got no idea where he went after Jaggor's death."

Detour grunted as Misfire shot off the way they've come from. "Acid Storm, this is Detour. We've hurt Stratus very bad, but we lost Jaggor and Dark Walk... Stratus hypnotised the entire station and in the resulting battle, they somehow injured something critical and blew themselves up. We lost the little bugger when the implosion occured. Misfire nodded, his neck joints creaking as he did so. "None of us are in a shape to pursue the enemy. But by the time the others get here, he'll be long gone."

"We can't help it. 'Sides, we have our orders!" Detour replied, ecstatic at the thought of returning to their base, wherever it is. Hunting the enemy personally is fun, but the Micromaster preferred to have others doing it. He's not a total coward—fighting in the frontlines as advance assault for years will do that to you—but he's merely afraid of losing his life. "What is going on?" demanded querulous vocals. "Where's our fuel?"

"Doctor? Doctor Retro?" another asked, much stronger and very baritone.

Solder staggered to a halt, staring around him, registering the presence of ten massive units who occupied equally massive berths. None of them made an attempt to rise, but their optics glimmered redly. Even in his mania, Solder felt a cold chill, like coolant trickling down his pseudospine: triple-changers - and he was no match for them. He took a step and something caught his foot. "Fraggin' slag!" he spat, untangling himself.

"No need for that sort of talk, young 'bot," admonished some unseen unit from nearby.

"Uh?" Like Solder before, Stormfire stared round him. He moved cautiously back towards the centre of the ward, stopping beside the sealed hatch, and opened his comm. 'Zephyr, you reading me? I've lost the mad doctor, but you just ain't gonna believe this..!'

Blackjack grunted as Transcan told him the direction where Solder headed. "Many thanks."

Sparing Ransack a quick glance, Blackjack to Galestorm and was about to ask him to escort the reporters, and stopped. The Seeker is competent, but Blackjack might need him for the coming fight. So he turned to a heavyset mech among the ragtag group, one of the few he could risk to trust. "Irontread, do escort these kind news reporters as well as Ransack to Megatron, will you?"

Blackjack knew using Irontread was an adequate risk. Galestorm couldn't be spared — he'll be needed to rally the troops, and he's a Seeker, good in a fight. The rest of the troops with him currently are either incompetent, or simply untrustworthy.

Irontread grunted affirmative, and without further ado Blackjack's group was off again, leaving the simple-minded brute with Ransack and the newsmechs. "Follow?" The brutish Decepticon asked Transmission and Transcan uncertainly, pointing at them with one chubby finger at them and then at his chest. "You follow me. Okay?"

The hatch cover was cut from the heavy Hospital floor and the mechanisms retaining it were almost stupidly large; Solder had quite automatically jammed them by breaking both the motion sensors and running servos. No one would be coming after him unless they carried extreme weaponry.

Nevertheless, he itched with nervous impatience. Hugging the pump, muttering to himself, he scurried away down the wide, semi-lit tunnel. He had no curiosity about either its origin or destination, only that it led away from those who would rob him of his grand find. He had to repair Corvus...

Of course, what small sanity he still possessed knew Corvus' programme had terminated...

"Sir!" Stormfire popped a very correct salute at Blackjack - partly to hide his amusement at seeing the Micromaster perched on Galestorm's shoulder, but also partly because he knew he was going to have to give bad news.

"Solder has escaped through a hatch in the floor." Here Stormfire pointed to said hatch, although it was almost invisible in the dim lighting. "I was going to try to open it, when I noticed these... er... ancients."

"Ancients!" It was the Triple Changer who had told him off earlier. With a creaking of poorly oiled joints, a massive (as in, MASSIVE) form rose in the far corner of the ward, optics flickering. "How would you like to be called Sparklings, um?"

Blackjack scowled as Stormfire reported, noting the damaged Zephyr lurking beside him. "Well? What're you guys standing here for? Blow that hatch up if you have to!" the Micromaster snapped.

As the ragtag bunch of Decepticons aimed their weapons, the Triple-changer spoke, causing several jumpy ones to swing their guns towards the Triple-changer. "No." Blackjack commanded, raising an arm as a signal for them to lower down their weapons. "Let him speak." the Micromaster eyed the old Triple-changer suspiciously, but then decided that the arrival of several skilled troops would be pleasing to Lord Megatron after the stream of bad news he had received recently. "Identify yourself." Blackjack demanded, although with a more conservative tone compared to the tone he used before.

While they might be useful as troops, if they acted rashly, killing a dozen enemies would still be more pleasing to the Decepticon leader than to let them escape.

Meanwhile, two land-based Decepticons walked up to the hatch and began trying to hammer it open with their oversized fists. Blackjack tried not to sigh at their incompetence.

"There." Irontread mumbled, pointing at Megatron, "Megatron." the squat Decepticon waved his stubby arms to attract the leader's attention, before speaking slowly, as if it took effort for him to form each syllable. Blackjack replied, doing his best to make a good impression of Megatron to them (after all, they might decide to act hostile, after all), "That might have happened under Gigatron's rule. Megatron would be different..."

They wanted to tell you something along the lines of 'we may have been forgotten, but we have not forgotten'. Cryptic messages aside, they would make excellent additional troops for you, Lord."

Meanwhile, Galestorm's party are less than successful in prying open the hatch on the floor, which was no surprise. "It's made up of very dense material, sir." Zephyr replied, "Just as the walls of this building. It's reinforced. Nothing short of siege weapons could penetrate this." To prove his point, Zephyr launched a salvo of compressed wind bombs, which did nothing more than to chip off the dura-steel covering of the hatch.

Downdraft stared at his feet and considered what to say to Blackjack...

There were sixteen of them left; sixteen out of sixty-four. Sixty-four prototype units created by Shockwave and allocated to the Kalis border wars as a proving ground. And they proved inadequate to the task... Oh, they were really good fighters, programmed with full technical and tactical data, who secured the designated area in the name of Megatron, but their transforming cogs could not take the loading and more perished from internal systems failure than enemy fire. Once they learned their lesson, the survivors reverted to single-mode transformation, opting for either air or ground mode, and they carried on fighting until their higher fuel dependency meant they were no longer economically viable. Shockwave 'pensioned' them off to defend Kaon, but they gradually drifted into the Hospital as patients suffering power grid problems.

Twenty-two had stayed functional; one, Shoot Up, had terminated peacefully only recently; the other four had... disappeared... along with their dedicated medic, Lathe.

Walk out of here? Some of them might, but at least nine could barely stand up. That included Rotator.

What would Blackjack think? Slag, what would Megatron think..?

Blackjack bent down next to Stormfire. "Agreed. Whoever utilized this to... theoritically kidnap your brethen-" Blackjack nodded sympathetically to Downdraft "-must've known about this from a long time ago. Regardless, we must get that old coot Retro and question him for a bit."
