Once, Protihex was a living dream of cooperation between individuals, a home for Cybertronians sick of the war and politics and laws that had torn their race apart. Now it has become much less than that: its citizens are impoverished and downtrodden, living in fear of the foreign armies and criminal gangs that have moved into the city and begun carving it up. Little of the old dream is left, and only one question is left on most of the citizens' minds: which of the factions will drive out all of the others and establish themselves as the 'legitimate' government over those who don't want to be governed?

Freeway shrugs at Wheelie's comment. "I will behave okay, so just go and lead the way! I will cover our six, so that when we return we don't need a fix!" Freeway laughs at his own comment, but then realises there isn't anybody around to laugh at his weak immitation of Wheelie. Freeway then follows him.

Inferno still leaned in his seat with his legs resting on top of the round conference table when the chamber door slid open.

"Well, 'bout time. Hey, Cerebr-" Inferno said as he looked towards the doorway, stopping short when Fortress Maximus ducked under the archway and entered.

"Aww, you didn't have to get all dressed up in your fancy duds on account of us, Maxi," Inferno said as he straighted himself up and slid his legs off the table.

"Thank you for being patient. I apologize if my sudden change in appearance seems unexpected," Fortress Maximus told him.

Making his way over to the table, the large Headmaster took his seat.

"Now - I understand you two have information," he continued.

"Sure do," Inferno answered.

Picking up the small data card containing the city plans, Inferno pushed it across the table to Weirdwolf.

"I was never good at decipherin' techobabble jargon. Wolf, you mind shovin' that thing into the projector and explain what's on it to him?"

Wheelie paused, hugging the ground, so very aware that his personal livery did him no favours against a green background; best he could hope for was to resemble one of the rusty patches scuffing what was probably a very expensive bit of landscape design.

"Freeway, come! To Wheelie, now!" he hissed. "Keep down low - polite to bow!"

No weapons had been turned in the direction of the infiltration team so far and he hoped it stayed that way...

On one knee beside the coolant outlet, Mirage carefully investigated the array of small red lasers set above the grille. The security was designed to keep out turbofoxes drawn to the Heights by the (sad to admit) abundance of retro-rats haunting the lower levels. The gate became automatically electrified if any beam were broken. Just beyond the gate was the control box, placed there for convenience; it was too lowly a tool to take up space above. There was no alarm attached for the same reason.

Concentrating, he adjusted his photon web and began to move his left hand towards the bars, his rifle poised in his right.

Shockwave acknowledged Ratchet's comments by inclining his head graciously, but he did not quite know what to make of the wink! He was also much taken aback when the Autobot medic correctly summised Sucker Punch was one of his own.

(Emotional analysis: annoyance - self-exposure. Logic: should not have revealed details of unit's power core.)

"I will lead the operation," he agreed. "This is necessary as there has been a high degree of experimental work on this unit. Hoist may assist me, if he so wishes."

Hoist handed Shockwave the laser wrench he had been using and looked at Ratchet.

"I think I can do what you're asking, but I need to know how serious you are about this. Have you done any business case studies, or is this all a...patriotic fantasy on Giggy's part? Do you have any raw data, any polling or focus group results that point to people actually wanting to watch these movies?"

(OOC: Spinister is nowhere near Pounce, he's with Mirage.)

Spinister watched as Mirage carefully worked to deactivate the laser grid, impressed by how the Autobot was handling the trap. He would have handled the situation differently -- Hairsplitter could have projected low-power lasers into the receivers so that they wouldn't notice the beams being broken at all, and Singe could have deactivated the junction box -- but he was impressed at how the Autobot handled the problem without a pair of Targetmasters at his disposal.

Zoom patrolled the general area, and was within shooting distance from Mirage and Spinister, if they so choose. The Reflector unit had his back against the Autobot and Decepticon, so he couldn't possibly see them.

Some distance away, Frostbite (let's just say he got hired sometime in the internim) crouched in dragon mode like some sort of sinister watchdog, breathing ice.

Road Hugger watched as Wingspan and Swindle negotiated about their deal. Road Hugger considered the matter. Making a movie should be simple enough... actors? They had those. CGI and special effect? A quick stop at Hot House and Ironworks' place should be enough. Audience? Action films always draw a crowd, especially if it's outer-space shows...

The ex-Micromaster was about to open his mouth again, but decided against it.

With a polite nod, Ratchet left Shockwave and Hoist to their patient and disappeared behind the doors of a large storage room conjoined with the medbay. The storage space had been cleared sometime ago - shortly after the disaster relief team returned to the Steelhaven - to house the bodies of Protihexians who were in either critical or irreparable stasis. Some awaited the necessary components...while others, sadly, awaited interment.

Rows upon rows of stasis pods stood up vertically, emitting a faint, blue glow that filled the entire room. It was a despairing sight to behold, one that the seasoned medic was all too familiar with. Ratchet's boot steps echoed within the silent chamber as he moved along the aisles of Protihexian citizens, whispering the names of each of them as he walked past until stopping in front of a lone pod. He wiped the condensation off the glass seal and stared up at the Autobot that peacefully floated behind the transparent vessel - Perceptor.

Life support equipment indicated that his condition was still stable, much to Ratchet's relief. Most of the cranial damage Perceptor had sustained had already been repaired beforehand. Yet, oddly, he hadn't responded to stimuli or prompting. As if his mind was resisting. Ratchet accessed the pod's control panel and typed in a sequence of commands. The pod moaned and hissed as it disengaged itself and slowly lowered into a horizontal position. Moving to the head of the coffin-like capsule, Ratchet gently wheeled it out of the storage room and back into the medbay.

Mirage grinned and squeezed the trigger gently. Static target - no challenge. The alarm box spluttered very briefly and the red beams went off. He deactivated his photon web and turned his head to look at Spinister.

"Now we cut through the inner grid," he said. "Nothing special, just meant to keep vermin out."

Wheelie spotted Frostbite and dropped flat again. He could hear Freeway behind him and silently cursed, easing a poniard out subspace and slipping it rakishly between his dental arches.

He began to move wide of the watcher's position; his best option was to get behind him. And if Freeway blundered enough to draw enemy fire, so much the better!

As he worked on Sucker Punch, assisted by Hoist, Shockwave considered what might be his creation's response on finding him there. No doubt, Sucker Punch had found out that no rescue attempt had been made; but his tracker had gone offline. An Autobot transmission out of Uraya at the time did note the presence of an enemy hostile, but that was inconclusive given the number of active Decepticons then in the area.

"Tamp flow," he told Hoist suddenly. "I am registering feedback to consciousness circuitry."

Hm, most unexpected. It would appear that Sucker Punch is trying to over-ride the electro-anaesthesia...

Having lived through the 1980s on Earth, Swindle was familiar with the series that Wingspan had referenced. He paused for a few seconds, dredging up his memories of both of the franchises.

"I think we'd want something that skews more toward Star Trek than Star Wars," he said at last. "that format -- an ongoing serial with the occasional 'big event' feature -- would probably work the best for what you're aiming at. Even if 90% of the episodes were throwaway lowest-common-denominator entertainment, we would have a lot of opportunities to back-fill the ideological propaganda without being too blatant about it."

Spinister was tempted to take out Zoom, but the Reflectorbot wasn't a threat -- certainly not to two cloak-equipped infiltrators. Making the enemy 'disappear' would probably make it harder for them to sneak inside, so the Targetmaster wouldn't attack unless he was given a good reason to.

Freeway opens up his hand and shows Wheelie the Rust inducing oxidizing agents. "I used them on Blurr not too long ago. They'll do the trick!"

Freeway quickly gets up, exposing himself and most likely gets himself spotted by the enemies. "Hey Dorkbite!" Freeway yells at Frostbite. "Today's special: Rust bot!" Frostbite was about to doze off, and he was taken by surprise by Freeway's attack. The first strike impacted on the draconic transformer's batlike wings, instantly covering it with rust. Before the second one slammed onto his face, though, Frostbite's mouth burned with a blue, icy aura and Frostbite unleashed the frigid beam, freezing the canister, shattering it before it could destroy Frostbite's face. The dragon roared and began to move towards freeway, the air freezing around his mouth.

After carefully moving Perceptor from his stasis pod onto a slab in the medbay, Ratchet produced a curious looking socket wrench from his work station and loosened the the bolts and fasteners along his patient's "helm". Slowly, he eased it off and placed it aside, revealing the complex network of Perceptor's neural processor underneath.

Reaching to the back of his head, Ratchet reeled out a cable with some type of peripheral device at its tip and connected it into a port in Perceptor's augmented brain to interface with the offline Autobot. Reaching back to his work station, Ratchet rustled around his tool kit and retrieved two wire-thin laser scalpels. Gripping them between his fingers, Ratchet hutched over his patient, adjusted his optics to zoom in at a microscopic level and, delicately, went to work.

"Firewagon," he said through the comm, "we have a security breach in the lower levels. Take Streamline and Jitterbug, and find out what's going on."

"Gotcha, boss," Firewagon grunted in reply.

Zoom gagged as Spinister appeared out of seemingly nowhere and strangled him. Choking, he tried to claw at the Sharkticon tail on his neck, albeit ineffectively. "Hurrrkkk-" Zoom's optics bulged as the weapon began to tear apart the hydraulics and energon pipes on his neck, until the Reflectorcon stopped struggling and went limp.

Frostbite watched Zoom's death, as Mirage and Spinister decloaked. Idly the mad scientist considered referencing an Earth show called The Godfather. After all, considering Zoom's way of death, it seemed appropriate. Instead, he hovered towards Mirage, claws glowing blue as he prepared to unleash another ice beam...

Mirage rolled, came up onto one knee in firing position, and stopped, clawing with his free hand at the ice coating his torso, which was tightening quickly and dangerously. He was getting red markers on his diagnostics hub.

Spotting movement, he looked up to see Frostfire approaching in preparation for another, possibly stasis-lock inducing, attack. His response was autonomic; he opened fire at near point-blank range, shooting first at one glow and then at the other. He could not miss...

Mirage's shots slammed onto Frostbite's glowing claws with deadly accuracy. The laser blast reacted with the freeze beam, causing a nasty side-effect to Frostbite, causing his two arms to freeze.

As the mercenary flailed, the ice chunks that used to be his hands messing up with his repulsors, he crash-landed awkwardly in a mass of limbs and metal. Grunting, he tried to get back up, to little success.

Unable to take advantage of Frostfire's fall, Mirage cried out in agony, trying to break the ice constricting his body panels. At the same time, not helping any, he felt as if something inside was repairing the damage even as it occured and preventing him over-riding the receptor signals.

The upper cut had caught Hoist completely by surprise. Crumpled against the medbay wall and with his vision still blurry from the blow he could make out the figure of the recently reanimated Sucker Punch. As his vision cleared he could see that the Decepticon was brandishing a pistol and that Shockwave was in close proximity. Hoist rubbed his chin painfully,

“Ahem...yes, good,” he turned his head back towards Weirdwolf. “Then I’ll need you to pass on this information to them.”

“Couldn’t you’ve done that yourself?” Inferno asked.

“Enable user interface,” Ratchet muttered to himself. “Prepare to dive.”

He waited for moment until he was granted access. Slipping into Perceptor’s computerized cyberbrain, a crudely rendered avatar materialized within a digitized plain (OCC: see my previous post).

“Engage remote network.”

A digitized control panel appeared in front of him, along with a detailed schematic of Perceptor’s complex neural network above it, which Ratchet carefully looked over.

“Hmm, just as I thought; closed neural syndrome. Some kind of firewall filter, or psychological barrier induced by Perceptor’s subconscious to protect the information stored within. Hmph, doesn’t surprise me that Perceptor’s ego would go to such length to set up this kind of proxy.”

“Well...this at least tells me that there is still cerebral trauma I somehow managed to overlook,” Ratchet ran his finger across the screen in front of him, tapping it at specific image depicting a region of Perceptor’s cyberbrain. “Hrrrrm, you can keep your secrets for all I care, just tell me what the problem is….Hmm, hold on a klik, these junctions along the neo-cortex look…”

Ratchet musings were interrupted by the ruckus occurring in the medbay, forcing him disengage. When he came to, he swung his head to the opposite end of medbay, spotting the reactivated Sucker Punch.

While it appeared that Shockwave and Hoist had the situation under control, this interruption irritated Ratchet nonetheless.

“Grrrr. Computer,” Ratchet called out. “Ready EMP pulsewave in the medbay on selected target.”

“Acknowledged,” a calm, yet robotic voice responded. “Awaiting action.”

“Hey! This is a place of healing! Calm down,” Ratchet sternly told Sucker Punch. “Shockwave – please keep your bot in check. He’s disrupting my patients and I’d rather not enable the Steelhaven’s security measures.”

Frostbite did not register Spinister as the Decepticon cloaked, but his attention was focused on reaching Mirage, and as he dragged himself across the ground with his icy claws, it left him open if Freeway or Wheelie decided to attack...

Which the latter did. So focused was Frostbite on Mirage that he did not notice Wheelie until he was impaled, the poniard ripping through him and poking out at the other hand. He stared, dumbfounded, at the wound, leaking energon.

His frigid aura proved to be his downfall, as his energon froze instantly the moment it leaked out and came into contact with the super-cold air around him. The cold seeped into the wound, causing hydraulics, circuits and energon to burst due to the sheer cold. Frostbite saw the irony in this and let out a long, tormented laugh even as his entire body began to freeze solid. As his head began to gloss over with ice, his red optics blinked once, twice, then faded out.

When the ice was practically gone, the Elite spy hunkered down, trying to read his diagnostics.

Wheelie turned his attention elsewhere. "You okay/can play?" he asked Freeway. Then looked around, features hard. "Sinister Spinister not in sight/seek him, we must, with all our might!"

“Thank you, Weirdwolf,” Fortress Maximus replied. “Now that Spinister and Pounce have been updated, it is time that we too made our move,” he looked to Inferno, Weirdwolf and Hyperdrive.

“Hey, you know I’m behind ya, Maxi,” Inferno said. “What’s the plan?”

“The plan? Once they relay their current positions (OOC: via Weirdwolf), our strategy is to stay out of Spinister and Pounce’s way lest we expose them,” Fortress Maximus told him.

“I propose we use the drainage system here,” he continued, pointing to the projection. “And quietly move underneath the city-state until we reach Templar Heights. Black Shadow’s stronghold is connected via a security grid that is powered by a converted shuttle. It is currently being used as generator to power up the energy field set up around Templar Heights. That will be our primary target.”

“I can infer that the shuttle is positioned in an area of strategic significance (OOC: I should hope so, anyway). Judging by this topographical image and the information Wingspan imparted to us, I have determined that the shuttle is either here…or here,” Fortress Maximus pointed to the projection. “The drainage system will lead directly underneath these points. I have no doubt that in order to generate a field that large, the generator’s electrical output must be substantial. Meaning, that it is traceable. With the appropriate diagnostic equipment it will serve as our beacon.”

“However,” his tone became grave. “This will not be a straightforward task. The drainage network is old and complex, and the enclosed space puts us at a tactical disadvantage if we are detected. Furthermore, though we will not be visible to the bare optics, we are still unclear of the scanning equipment Black Shadow has installed around the Heights. To avoid detection, all but our most essential systems must be switched offline. I cannot stress that enough. Aside from standard weaponry and diagnostic equipment, bring a vaporator with you. Report to the ship’s armoury if you are not equipped with one. Because of its bio-based nature, vaporators have low energy detection, which should allow us to dig our way up to our targets once we have located them.”

Fortress Maximus turned to Weirdwolf.

“Weirdwolf - your input, please,” He asked.

In the ethereal-like realm, a holographic display hovered in front of Ratchet indicating that he had successfully fused another junction between his patient’s neo-cortex to the rest of the neural network. “Okay, connection successful and is responding,” Ratchet mused. “Onto the next.”

Carefully he guided his hands to another region, once more fusing the severed link. “Phew…Got it.”

On cue, and quite to Ratchet’s astonishment, the digitized environment his avatar floated within began to come to life. Streams of esoteric figures glowed brighter and rushed quicker all around him.

“INTIALIZING,” a voice echoed throughout the surreal plain. “IRREGULARITY DETECTED.”

“Uh-oh,” Ratchet reflexively looked above him, as if to seek out the voice. “I can take a hint.”

As Ratchet yanked the peripheral device connecting him to Perceptor’s neural net, a jolt, more than likely a security measure, caused Ratchet reel back and crash to the floor of the medbay. He lay dazedly for a moment while he gathered his senses.

“Oooh…owww…..nasty little firewall you have there,” he moaned. Sitting up, Ratchet rubbed the top of his head before looking to the slab his patient rested. He was taken aback by what he saw. Perceptor, rather casually, sat upright, seemingly unaware of his exposed cybernetic brain.

“Ratchet?” he looked down bewilderedly at the medic. “What ever are you—” Perceptor paused to touch the top of his head. “Oh dear. I seemed to have misplaced my cranial casing.”

Perceptor glanced around, soon spotting his “helm” resting behind him. “Ah, there it is, I found it.” He smiled as he lifted it up and slid it back on.

“Perceptor, please…let me help you with that,” Ratchet said. “You shouldn’t strain yourself. You’ve been offline for…”

“Oh, no need to bother yourself, I can manage,” he replied as he reached for a socket wrench and began to fasten his helm to his head. As he worked the tool, he looked around the medbay, immediately spotting Hoist with Sucker Punch – obviously recognizing the former – then looked to another corner and spotted Gnaw and Shockwave. This sight seemed to amuse him.

“Do correct me, Ratchet, but are my registries accurate? Has a stellar cycle elapsed?” He inquired.

“I’m afraid so,” Ratchet told him. “[insert day & month] to be precise.”

“Hmm, I see,” Perceptor answered. “Well then...I'll need to be recapitulated on matters."

Hyperdrive looked up at Fortress Maximus and shrugged, "Could go in there, guns blazing, and kill them all." Hyperdrive said with a loony grin. "Of course, since you're an Autobot an' all, we could drill our way in and place an energy siphon. Better yet, sneak in Wolfy's squishie partner and your smaller self to sabotage them, or mebbe to siphon those energy out. Small guys tend to go unnoticed, take it from me."

The thuggish Decepticon scratched his head, "Don't we have teleporters or the like? I mean, I remember that time when Megsy sent us to the Ark from Cybertron with portals... any chance we could have one of those?"

Hoist wished he was surprised by the damaged cons statement, but he wasn’t. Hoists dealings with Shockwave had taught him that although he was extremely intelligent and powerful he lacked the ability to form meaningful attachments to other bots. It made perfect sense that Sucker Punch one of Shockwaves own creations would have been given minimal programming and training in regards to interpersonal relations. Hoist as jovial as ever decided to extend the arm of friendship.

“Well then Sucker Punch we can’t have you drinking alone can we? Hoists the name and repairs are the game. Speaking of which, your repairs are almost done. I was meant to have clocked off several astro seconds ago well that was until you turned up. What’s say we get you reacquainted with Cybertron and some good old fashioned energon brew?”

Hoist was interrupted by the minor commotion in the corner, he turned just in time to witness Shockwave issuing his commands to Knaw. It was obvious by the Sharkticons expression that he was not receiving or understanding the instructions very well. Hoist decided to lend a hand,

“Knaw straighten out your transistors he isn’t going to hurt you”, Hoist glared at Shockwave briefly.

“He means take the data to the big red and blue guy! You know, Optimus Prime the one who likes to make speeches all the time? Our courageous leader?”

Again Hoist was interrupted, he turned around to see the familiar form of Preceptor. He took a few steps towards the Autobot scientist quite obviously happy to see he back on line.

“Preceptor! Well I do say, good show SIR. BLOODY good show! You had us all worried there for a sec, sorry but I must dispense with the pleasantries as you can see I’m in the middle of a repair job here” he said with his arms out streched.

Hoist returned and continued to add the finishing touches to Sucker Punches shoulder repairs.

“As you can see Sucker Punch, it’s all systems go here”.

"Sadly, teleportation isn't an option," Fortress Maximus told Hyperdrive. "We don't know if orbital bounce would work in conjunction to the energy fields installed around Templar Heights. And lest we forget, aside from leaving its passengers momentarily disoriented, teleportation also leaves an easily detectable energy signature. Remember, this is a clandestine operation."

(OOC: Also, we tend not to rely on teleportation in the RPG unless the story necessitates it. Otherwise we run the risk of players (mis)using it as a cop-out or a means to circumvent plot structures. I'm not accusing you of doing this, of course, just thought I'd put that out there :))

"But yes, siphoning or sabotaging the fuel lines is the more practical, as well as safer, solution," Fortress Maximus continued. "Of course, due to the nature of this operation, my 'extended' self (OOC: Cerebros) will accompany you. The form you see now will remain on standby in the event that we are detected and require a hasty retreat. So, to recap: our targets are the fuel reserves marked here and here," he pointed to the projection. "Our secondary target is the field generator."

"Got it. I'm ready when you are, Bigbot," Inferno said.

"Good. If there is nothing else any of you wish to add," Fortress Maximus looked to Weirdwolf and Hyperdrive. "Then each of you upload a copy of this map, then follow me to the armoury."

"I assure you Ratchet, I am in functioning order. But, I appreciate your concern," he waved dismissively.

Leaving no further room for argument, Perceptor turned away from Ratchet and approached the opposite corner of the large room where Shockwave and Gnaw stood. He wore an amused expression as he approached

In the back of his mind, Aero wondered briefly what he was doing, once again about to put himself in a situation where he was likely going to have to fight. The feeling passed quickly, the realization coming an going just as fast - Arrowhead had already put so much on the line to help Aero Blade, it was far past time to do the same. From Spinister's first comment, Aero Blade was giving him a credulous look. Shockwave he knew and was comfortable with, which was why Stratus had been as well, but he had never seen the mech standing here before now, and he knew Stratus would not be so quick to trust him. However, the unfamiliar mech could've just been stretching things a bit, being allies with Shockwave without actually realize the minicon wasn't so trusting. Regardless, there wasn't much other choice in the matter, and it was marginally better than just hanging out boxed up in a piece of equipment just waiting to be found...

He was still very wary himself, though, seeing Spinistered continued tension in Arrowhead's direction. So long as Aero still seemed to have some grasp on the direction the encounter might go, he needed to be sure that he kept Arrowhead safe.

"Yes, getting out of here was what I was planning on. We were working on that.." Aero Blade spoke, turning his head towards Arrowhead briefly before looking back at Spinister, "..when you arrived."

Aero Blade didn't pursue his fustration long - he still in his mind had to look out for Arrowhead, and he didn't want to chance him getting hurt trying to stop Spinister. "Hmf. What does it matter anyways," He spoke to himself briefly, probably about his own comments a moment ago.

"Fine, you win. But if you want it down, I have to do it, and I won't if you start trying to randomly murder anyone on the way over there. They made me put the shield up earlier, and I modified the equipment - I'm the only one who can take it down safely. So unless you're idea of fun is getting yourself blown up or suffering a fatal spark surge..."

The statement was a partial bluff, but Aero Blade said it without hesitation and with absolute confidence. He hadn't intentionally boobytrapped the device earlier, not with the other guys looming over him, but there was many a time that his repair work had left his allies puzzled if they hadn't been there to see it. He spoke the last part in Spinister's direction, his optics taking a hardened expression again as he watched the Decepticon.

Arrowhead nodded mutely as he started to lead the other two Transformers out of the building. He didn't respond to Aero Blade's attempt to bait Spinister, because he'd seen the Decepticon's kind among the Space Mafia ranks and he knew that he would kill both of them out of hand if he thought they would be a detriment to "the mission".

"It's not far," he said to no one in particular. "But we'll have to take the back route, so to speak, to make sure we're not seen. Follow me."

As he spoke, he started to lead them toward a set of hastily-rigged storage silos that had been set up along the back of the compound.

"No, it's...sigh...just try keep quiet," Cerebros answered Hyperdrive's query.

Taking cue from Weirdwolf, Cerebros scanned the area ahead while Inferno, as instructed, eased off on his throttle, reducing himself - as well as the level of noise his engine was producing - to a quick but smooth cruising speed.

"Road looks clear so far. All things considerin'," Inferno informed his two headmaster passengers. "Figure we'll arrive in East Uptown in about a breem or two."

"Wheelie sorry for all the mess," the orange mech whispered. "Tried fast speed and made much less..."

"What was that?"

Arrowhead's hopes sunk as one of the guards looked in their direction, his attention drawn by Aero Blade's clumsiness.

"What was what?" another guard retorted.

"I heard something."

"Then check it out," the lead guard told him.

As the goon headed over in their direction, Arrowhead heard Spinister's whispered voice.

"If he sees your friend," he said menacingly, "all three of them will have to die."

Arrowhead tried to glare at him, but found that he couldn't see the Decepticon anywhere. "Uh...leave it to me. I'll run them off."

Arrowhead grabbed his toolbox and stepped out of the shadows. "Sorry guys," he said to the guards. "I didn't startle you, did I? I was just doing, uh, a little maintenance on one of our security cameras."

"There's no camera here," the guard told him.

"Well, not now there isn't," Arrowhead improvised. "But you know how the boss likes to move them around. I installed a feed here a while ago, and we were going to put up a camera, but it looks like a turbofox got into the wiring. I'll have to re-run it, uh, a little bit later."

"Why are you so nervous?" the guard asked him suspiciously.

"Nervous?" Arrowhead shook his head, then chuckled. "We're getting shelled by what seems like every Protihexian who owns a gun, and you're asking me why I'm nervous? What, did you leave your emotion chips at home this morning?"

Once Inferno slowed down to a halt in front of the rail, Cerebros climbed off and looked down at the drench below. It extended to the east and west, ending at a large utility hole at the latter. "We'll go the rest of the way by foot," he said.

" 'Kay, Wolf, end of the road," Inferno told Weirdwolf.

Crosshairs, he thought. Autobot armoury officer. I met him a few times when I was working with Iacon security. A Targetmaster, but with no Nebulan in sight. Maybe an ex-Targetmaster? I don't know him well and it's been too long since I've been an Autobot to expect him to treat me like a comrade.

"Crosshairs, it's good to see you again."

Crosshairs smiled, but the expression didn't carry over to his eyes. "It's good to see you too, Onslaught. It looks like retirement suits you."

"I don't consider this 'retirement' per se," Onslaught told him. "Just a change of career."

"So I've heard," Crosshairs replied. "You're working as a consultant for Gigatron now, aren't you? That must be awkward."

"I don't have any contact with him," Onslaught clarified. "All our business is done through intermediaries." He shrugged. "I might not be a soldier anymore, but I still want to make sure that Cybertron is safe. Gigatron is the only one of our leaders who shares my priority. Because of that, I'm willing to overlook some of our more...unfortunate history."

Onslaught leaned forward in his chair. "I don't mean to be abrupt, but what can I do for Autobot Security today?"

Crosshairs let out a dull chuckle. "Well...actually, I'm interested in hiring you."

"What for?"

"Cybertron faces a lot of threats," Crosshairs said, "and not all of them are external. There are plenty of them in our own back yard...including one right here in Protihex."

"The Space Mafia?"

"Yes," Crosshairs told him. "The Space Mafia. I want them gone. And not just from Protihex, either. They've been a blight on our world for years now, and it's high time that we put a stop to it."

"How?" Onslaught tilted his head to one side. "Not to be overly negative, but there are no laws to enforce and no government to make them."

"Right on one count," Crosshairs agreed, "but wrong on the other. The old Protihex government's laws are still on the books. It might not be all that you'd hope for, but it would give you the authority to kick people in the ass for starting running gunfights or setting up armed encampments."

Down on his knees and sinking rapidly, Aero Blade staggered as he fought to keep concious, desperately. Already, he could feel it starting to happen...

"No..." Aero spoke, barely audible as he collapsed onto his side. He could now see Spinister standing over the other mechanic. Aero Blade's optic color began to turn grey as he felt his head swimming, threatening to swallow him in darkness. "....you don't know...what you've done...."

It was the last thing he managed to mutter before he went offline into stasis lock.

Road Hugger tilted his head, unsure about what Swindle was saying due to the Earthen culture reference, but seeing the frazzled computer he knew something was wrong. The ex-Micromaster caught the datacard with ease and dashed out of the room, heading towards Onslaught's office.

Goldeneye, Goldeneye... perhaps someone blew Swindle's property up? It seems unlikely that they left anything resembling gold over there...

Road Hugger reached Onslaught's office. He knocked on the door, no doubt interrupting the discussion between the Combaticon leader and the Autobots (or rather, ex-Autobots) inside.

The Space Mafia had placed two guards on the generator room door - for all the good it did. Despite the state of alert, the pair had been chatting about a little bar in Polyhex right up to the instant that Mirage, Wheelie and Freeway came bursting out upon them.

"Uh, neat job," Mirage complimented Wheelie.

Wheelie nodded as he cleaned his poinard on a scrap of fine metal mesh torn from the nape of one guard's neck when the blade went in.

"Freeway, how long until your bombs go..."

BANG!

The wall shook. The floor shook. The closed door was punched off its hinges and embedded itself in the opposite side of the corridor. The lights flared and went out.

"Forget I asked," Mirage muttered, hauling himself back to his feet, his optics shining brightly in the pitch darkness. He switched to infra-red and put his sensor net at its widest; spies were prepared for 'blind' situations.

After Spinister evaded him, Aero Blade had to struggle to get back onto his feet. Staggering like a mech who'd spent far too much time at an energon mixer, he grasped a nearby piece of equipment for stability, then had to pause to rest. Shudders wracked his body every so often, still very much in the grasp of the EMP's effects. It seemed by sheer willpower alone that he was standing, just barely...

In truth, much of Aero Blade's systems were still offline, especially one particular, almost innocuous, but important component. It was locked in the EMP induced 'sleep' with everything else, and so long as it remained so, something else burried deep stirred from its sleep...

It was not a new occurance, others had seen it before - but this time, it had focus. As Aero Blade's red hued optics came online, fragments of recient memories played through what worked of his processor, one specific form in particular. Forcing himself not to stumble as much as possible, Aero headed towards the sound of the fighting, looking for Spinister.

It was not so dark here, since the emergency power was on, and Mirage had no problems leading his comrades up the enclosed turret. This was one of those times that local knowledge came in useful.

"Legs ache, no joke/Wheelie thinks joints smoke!" Wheelie grumbled and his vocals set up strange echoes along the stairs. Being smaller than average, he was finding the going tough, perforce using his hands to haul himself from riser to riser.

"This route was designed to descend rather than ascend," Mirage apologised. "It is one of the old evacuation ways. I am rather hoping Black Shadow has not found any of them or else we will be in an extremely vulnerable position very shortly."

Cyane smiled and did not contradict Blurr's assessment of her as a mech; he was probably a bit out of it and, anyway, it was not always easy to tell when a Minibot was actually a fem...

"I have absolutely no idea where the medbay is or what's happening aboard," she said bluntly. "There is some kind of party going on outside with regard to the election of the Autobot called Groove." She shrugged, shifted her hand to steady the taller unit. "I must admit - yours is the first friendly face I have seen since my... ah... escort took off... literally."

"Hmm. Possible concussive damage, but at least he's conscious," Fixit said. "You, help me with him," he snapped his fingers at the drone.

"That was quite the spectacular entrance," he grinned. "We all saw it on the monitors."

Black Shadow cut through the skies, still scanning for any air currents or heat signatures that would tip him off to his quarry's location. Unfortunately, he was paying so much attention to his scanners and IR feeds that he forgot to check his visual sensors until it was almost too late.

Directly ahead of him, too far away to avoid, was a lattice of steel monofilament that someone had strung up between the two buildings. He barely had the time to note that it hadn't been there on his last pass, let alone try to dodge it. Without much in the way of choice, he fired off two rounds from his white phosphorous shell launcher. They ignited, melting the monofilament and letting Black Shadow pass safely through...but covering himself in flames in the process.

Black Shadow accelerated and dove, trying to extinguish the burning chemicals that were clinging to him and illuminating him through his cloak. But before he had much of a chance to see if that strategy would work, he found himself getting drilled with laser fire. The precision bursts targeted his engines, which were already damaged from the burning chemical slurry they'd inhaled. He swung around, pointing his nose in the direction of the incoming fire and accelerating as hard as he could...just in time to get broadsided by a particle beam barrage.

Black Shadow felt his heat-damaged right wing start to splinter under the barrage. He tried to bank and put a different part of himself in the line of fire, but the stress of his manoeuvre ended up snapping off the wing entirely. Black Shadow dipped to one side, stalled and started to spiral down toward the ground.

Stepping over his body, the intruder swiftly cut his way into the weapons locker and grabbed an ion rifle, then cut the guard's keychip out of his left wrist.

He strode down the cell-lined hall before stopping at a particular one and popping it open.

Blue Bacchus was happy to see his foes doing his job for him. That wasn't to say, though, that he was above helping them along the way a little. His Pretender shell split open before teleporting away in a puff of smoke. Out of the smoke emerged his smaller inner robot, heat beams firing at Aero Blade and Pounce from the guns he held in each hand.

Still locked in his death spiral, Black Shadow suddenly seemed to split into three separate parts. The nose section of the falling jet shot forward, igniting engines of its' own and climbing back into the sky. Meanwhile, the other two parts reconnected and reconfigured, forming into the Pretender's shell's robot mode before disappearing under a renewed cloaking shield.

Spinister carefully took note of where the damaged Pretender shell's fall had been taking it before it disappeared, but didn't give it too much thought. It was something he would have to deal with later, but not right now.

The helicopter tracked Black Shadow's angle of accent, calculated an intercept point and then let loose with his particle beam cannons. The now-smaller criminal managed to evade the fusillade, but he was forced to deviate from his flight path and duck behind a building for cover.

Presumably he thought that the physical barrier would keep Spinister from tracking him, but his Targetmasters on their rooftop perches gave the Decepticon two different vantage points to consider. Between himself, Singe and Hairsplitter, there were very few places in the Heights that you could go unseen.

Not wanting to risk dropping and accidentally damage the disk, he'd walked the entire distance, a fairly monumental task for him. Not with Shockwave in visual range, Stratus readjusted his grip and finally took to the air, hoving just below eye level a short distance from him with the archived information.

"Only one gun close by, I think," Mirage muttered, drawing his blaster rather than anything else with more finesse.

The hatch opened above his head; at least the old mechanisms, once moving, were silent if not exactly smooth or clean.

"Take a vow/silence now," Wheelie said quietly to Freeway.

Mirage, slipping up the last steps, gave one last look behind him into the two pairs of his comrades' gleaming optics. "Do not try to locate me. Wheelie, get under cover and then choose your target; Freeway, go with him."

And Mirage activated his disruptor. Once the shield had formed, he raced out into the open - one corner of the Height's complex - and immediately took down a couple of Space Mafia goons who came blindly running towards him. Wheelie came next, checked his position, and then dived into the shadows beside one of the buildings, crawling towards an armed 'bot crouching behind some rubble; he had his poniard in his teeth...

Shockwave accepted the disc from Stratus with one of his so very formal bows. "I am grateful," he said solemnly. "I understand that this has been a time-consuming task..."

But it had distracted the small unit from his worries about Aero Blade...

"Personal information recordings," he then told Perceptor, which gave nothing away. Carefully, he slipped the disc into a slot opening the right side of his chestplate.

He quite deliberately ignored the reference to Gnaw.

Blue Bacchus's shell hovered for a moment, trying to get a fix on Aero Blade or his remains.
___________________________________________

Meanwhile, Blue Bacchus's core robot was blasted backward as the wall he'd been cutting into suddenly exploded outward, tossing him to the ground.

"Oh, well-played," he muttered as he climbed up to a kneeling position and started to fire heat beams into the building.
___________________________________________

Spinister had just cleared another of the multi-floor building's central hallway when he caught sight of something...odd on the wall just ahead. The Targetmaster approached slowly, but he couldn't make out what it was. There was nothing there but a blur, just barely distinct from the wall it was attached to.

Chameleon mesh, he thought appreciatively. If it hadn't been inside of someone who I shot out of the sky, it would probably be working well enough that I'd never have seen it.

But he had seen it, and a very quick, low-intensity burst of flame from Singe was enough to burn away the mesh and expose the ion bomb underneath.

"Hairsplitter," he said, dropping the Nebulan to the ground, "inspect it."

"All the dirty jobs..." the Nebulan grumbled as he slinked forward. "Why can't you send Singe to blow himself up, just this once?"

"Because he actually would blow himself up, and I'd lose a useful resource," Spinister whispered back. "Besides, a Nebulan isn't large enough to set off Transformer-gauged motion sensors. You'll be fine."

"Easy for you to say, standing all the way back there..." Hairsplitter did as he was told, though, walking up to the newly-exposed bomb and looking at it speculatively. "Looks like a proximity trigger, alright," he said. "Nothing I can't handle."

A few minutes and several judicious bursts of low-power laser fire later, the bomb had been rendered blind and harmless.

"Good work," Spinister said. He strode forward, bending over to collect his partner...then pitched forward completely as the floor gave way underneath him.

As the Targetmaster and his two Nebulans dropped into the building's basement, Spinister mentally flagellated himself for taking his target too lightly.

Then he hit the floor.

Gravity Well pushed the seemingly-unconscious hyperactive Autobot off of him then slowly got to his feet with a groan.

"And thank you so much for your help, grasshopper," he said acidly to Jitterbug.

"Sorry. I was busy making sure we could escape." The Insecticon pressed a few more buttons, and the escape pod hatch irised open. "Now come on! Unless you want to get back to your cozy cell, that is."

"Go slag yourself," Gravity Well grumbled as he climbed into the escape pod and pressed the 'launch' button. "Just get me back to the Heights, you dumb bug."

With Hyperdrive creating the necessary diversion, Cerebros peered out the open doorway of the small storage room and looked down the opposite end of the corridor. Just as he was about to make a run for it, however, Inferno grabed Cerebros by the shoulder and pulled him back.

“Whoa, hold on there, bossbot,” Inferno said. “Didn’t ya hear what Wolfy said? There’s a teleporter out there somewhere. Wait for us to coax him out of hidin’ before you go runnin’ off to do your thing.”

“Yes, of course,” Cerebros nodded, then looked over to Weirdwolf. “Are you able to determine where the seeker is?” he inquired.

Just as Gravity Well and Jitterbug climbed onboard the escape pod, the blast door to the open area spread open and several officers marched in.

“Officer down,” one officer pointed to Blurr. “Secure him.”

“Step out of the pod!” another officer shouted at Gravity Well and Jitterbug.

In unison, each officer aimed their rifles at two escaping mechanoids, one deliberately firing a warning shot over their heads.

“Now!”

Fixit glanced around the room, periodically looking over to Cyane.

“Crazy business, huh?” he said. “So…uhh…what brings you to the Steelhaven?”

At that moment, two officers entered the hanger.

“Over here,” one officer called out to his partner.

“Oh, thank goodness,” Fixit let out a sigh of relief.

“Is there anyone else in here with you?” the second officer inquired.

“I-I don’t think so,” Fixit looked up to the officer.

“Hmm, alright. On your feet, you two,” he ordered them. “We’re here to escort to the upper level.”

Cyane gave Fixit a small, rueful smile - and quickly slipped the packet she had in her palm back into the secure storage locker in her left forearm. It was a smooth, easy movement and should draw no attention.

"Saved," she said. As she stood beside the much taller 'bot, she asked the nearest of the guards, "Who is in charge here? A lot of us escaped from Polyhex, but we're out on the streets with nowhere to settle."

His target seeming too intent on whoever was attacking his hiding place, Wheelie was able to get very close. The shadowy figure suddenly rose, firing back into the air, and Wheelie let out a brief grunt; he now realised he had been stalking Aero Blade!

Across the compound, Mirage was invisibly picking off Space Mafia hoods. None of them was particularly important, but they were numerous and taking them down meant less base support for the big hitters. It was a process he had followed in the past, thinning the enemy ready for other Autobots to come in. He was very aware of Blue Bacchus' shell hovering over the compound and tried to keep as much architecture as he could between them.

No longer loaded down with cargo, Stratus gave a brief sigh as he came to settle on Shockwave's shoulder, not even seeming to think twice about it now. He had grown used to accompaning the Decepticon, but after a few moments he became a bit unsettled as he looked around. Shockwave's task had been a momentary distraction at best, and Stratus's mind was already returning to his original lingering concerns.

"Has there been any word yet about Aero Blade?" Stratus would ask aloud.

Templar Heights

Aero Blade, unaware or unconcerned of Wheelie's presence, remained fully focused on Blue Bacchus's shell. He just barely peered out from behind the rubble at it, watching briefly as the shell scanned in the wrong direction for him.

Aero Blade ducked back behind the rubble again, moving swiftly along the remains of the large piece until he reached the other side, putting him off to the side (not quite behind) the shell, then watched it again for just a few seconds. A moment later and Aero sprang out from behind his cover, firing as heavily as his weapons could manage at his opponnent.

Blue Bacchus's shell immediately blinked out of existence when it detected Aero Blade's incoming fire, only taking a few peripheral hits before it reappeared a few dozen feet away, oriented itself toward the enemy and started to rain incendiary shells and maser beams down at the Autobot.

Now back inside the relative safety of his shell, Black Shadow didn't give the fallen Decepticon any time to recover. Almost as soon as Spinister hit the ground, he grabbed the smaller Decepticon, hoisted him up off the floor and threw him hard into a nearby wall.

"You know," he said almost conversationally as he stalked toward the Targetmaster, "in my line of work, a lot of people come after you. It's just something you get used to."

Spinister was trying to get to his feet, but Black Shadow kicked him in the gut, then drove him back down to the ground with an two-handed hammer blow. Then he kicked again, sending the Decepticon sliding across the floor.

"But you...two years ago you were drinking in my bar, having friendly chats with me and my employees and happily taking all the free drinks and other little bribes we'd give you so that you'd pretend you didn't know what our real business was."

Black Shadow leaned down to pick up a piece of structural steel that had made up the now-collapsed floor, then headed toward where Spinister had fallen.

"But then, hey, the politics change and all of a sudden I'm the enemy, and you'll fragging nuke my home just to make a slagging point. So you know what? I'm a little bit pissed, Spinister!"

Once he got close enough, Black Shadow swung the steel bar like a golf club, connecting solidly with Spinister's jaw and sending the Decepticon flying once again.

"So you and I...we're just going to have to work this out like men."

The Autobots' shots rang off of the escape pod's hull just as the already-closing door irised shut.

"Cram it!" Jitterbug shot back. A second later the pod let loose with a resounding thunk, launching itself away from the ship in an uncontrolled arc. "There, we're away and...oh hell."

"What?"

"They blew up the thruster controls," Jitterbug replied. "We're going to crash."

"No," Gravity Well told him. "You are going to crash. Me, I'm going through the windshield, transforming and flying away."

"The windshield is made of transparent aluminum," Jitterbug told him. "How do you plan to-ugh!"

"Like this!" Gravity Well clubbed Jitterbug over the head, then grabbed the insensate gangster and threw him bodily though the windscreen. Then he dove out himself, transformed to shuttle mode and blasted off for Templar Heights.

As the shell dissapeared, Aero Blade's visor would click into place over his optics, the tech standing ready and alert. When Blue Bacchus's shell reappeared, Aero Blade did a dissapearing act of his own, blanketing himself in a rapidly expanding smokescreen.

The rolling black smog clouds expanded in all directions, swallowing the shell's weapon fire and making it impossible to see if they had struck Aero. Within just a few seconds the entire area would be covered by the smokescreen, blocking out the light and dampening the sensors of any mech too close enough to get caught up in it.

((OOC: Up to you guys if you're in it or not, Clogs and Blackjack. I don't have any exact measurements in mind for how big the smokescreen is, but for perspective, I think Wheelie's location would make him just on the edge of it.))

The two guards escorted Fixit and (presumably) Cyane out of the landing bay and to a lift in the next room. “This way,” one of the guards pointed.

As one took watch, the other officer corralled to two small mechanoids into the small, rectangular space.

“Fortress Maximus is in command, ma’am,” one of the officers eventually answered Cyane. “He’s out on an important assignment, though. Ratchet and Cog are currently running things,” he pressed the switch to shut the elevator doors and continued. “I’m sure one of them would be more than willing to speak with you once everything is cleared in lower levels.”

“Uh, Ratchet?” Cog said. “A vessel just…”

“I know, I know, I see it,” Ratchet groaned. “Target the thrusters” he ordered. “And take it down.”

“On it. Autoguns online. Target acquired. Locked and – ”

But just as the crosshairs fixed themselves into the fleeing escape pod, Cog cancelled the command when Jitterbug suddenly crashed through the shuttle's windscreen, followed by Gravity Well, who transformed and whizzed away.

“They’ve abandoned the vessel,” Cog informed him. “Now targeting Gravity Well…”

As he rapidly tapped away at his station, Cog guided one of the outer hull’s twin-turrets onto the fleeing mobster and fired two bolts…

But to no avail. “Out of range,” he sighed.

Ratchet sat quietly in the captain’s chair, watching the large screen as Gravity Well disappeared into the horizon.

“Shall I send a team out to recover the escape pod?” Cog inquired.

Ratchet looked at the screen a moment longer, shook his head then looked away.

“Yes, please do that,” he answered solemnly “Heh. This just had to happen on my watch, didn’t it?” he quipped.

Cog, not grasping Ratchet's attempt at levity, let alone its timing, said nothing.

“No sense fretting over it, though. Cog,” he looked over to the drone. “Put the shields up. For now, no one gets in or out without authorization.”

“Understood.”

Hugging the ground, Wheelie let the tendrils of smoke dissipate before making a move towards Aero Blade's last position. Naturally, the other mech had vanished, presumably into the midst of the roiling darkness, and Wheelie pulled up short. Looking upwards, he could make out nothing of the airborne enemy who had been attacking Aero Blade.

"Good hunting," Wheelie murmured and slipped over towards the outer wall, hoping to circle it and find himself a target, quickly locating a couple of Space Mafia trying to set up an Energon canon. He smiled and lifted his blade.

Across the compound, Mirage saw the plume of smoke and assumed it came from something burning; by this time, plenty of things were. He winced, remembering better times spent here.

Since the smoke cut off his view towards Blue Bacchus' shell, he took the opportunity to run across an open area and dive into a doorway. He needed to conserve power for more vital moments when being invisible would be essential to survival...

I wonder why I keep running to dry so fast? he mused as he scanned the empty corridor before him.
