This is your all-purpose Botcon 2012 info thread.

----
The Botcon (http://www.botcon.com/BotCon2012/) website has posted the brochure for Botcon 2012 (http://www.botcon.com/BotCon2012/BotCon12brochure.pdf).

The brochure gives the usual details about the convention as well as revealing this year's theme -- The Shattered Glass Universe vs The Classics Universe.

This year's boxset will include:

Shattered Glass: Evil Ultra Magnus, Evil Tracks, Heroic Soundwave, Heroic Treadshot

Classics: Overlord (listed as Gigatron), Metalhawk

----

While, admittedly, I'm not at all interested in the convention, I am marginally curious by what mold they'll use for Overlord.

Mind, it'll probably be a case of deco-ing up mold X to resemble character Y rather than it being a decent match, but I've no intention of buying the thing anyway...

I just like the character, which is in no way influenced by my love for Last Stand of the Wreckers.

The link to the brochure doesn't seem to be working at the moment (including from the Botcon site itself) so I've no idea how they're selling this, but that list doesn't seem very exciting. I'm assuming "Evil Ultra Magnus" is an Animated reuse?

Evil Ultra Magnus is a straight repaint of the rts laser prime. Story behind it is that Magnus and his group manage to leave the mirror universe and enter the main classicsverse. They encounter Overlord etc

Star Trek anyone?????

And there was much meh'ing. BotCon back to form after a few decent years; certainly not worth braving the world's largest collection of sex offenders, sweat factories and manchildren for at any rate.

I'm further glad that I stopped collecting TF toys. This isn't the 'worst thing ever', but it really looks like Bludgeon got dipped in paint more than anything else. Overlord, however, he most certainly is not.

Gotta go back to the tail line of G2 to see worse-applied names to toys.

Huh.

Well, to its credit, it is a nice mold. But, as an "Overlord"? Nnngh, not so much. This really isn't doing much for me.

I don't know, i think it looks better than last years "Animated Optimus wearing a plastic bag on his head and pretending to be Menasor" repaint.

That was a weak entry, but it worked when looking at the rest of the set and where it was supposed to fit. I wouldn't have gone out of my way to get it, mind you... but with the others?

"Overlord" here just... he doesn't fit the classics aesthetics well, and doesn't actually invoke "Overlord" except for the paint colors. It's about as close to getting "Overlord" as repainting Energon Ironhide white and blue and then calling him "Movie-Verse Ultra Magnus".

No, it really doesn't. And it's not just the Samurai-ness that's throwing me off here (though I'm sure the in-fiction explanation why he is will be hilarious).

I understand that it's not intended to be LSotW or Masterforce Overlord, but it's still meant to be a Classics/G1 iteration of the character, isn't it? I know I'm probably being too harsh on the thing, but, well, I just don't see it.

Truth is Bludgeon was unique enough originally, and the RotF figure was a real "Hell yes, that's Bludgeon!". The best Hasbro could do for a recolour was pulling the name of someone who might have hung around with Bludgeon at some point out of a hat and thus basically admitting they had to recolour the thing and even they weren't convinced. DotM Guzzle has more in common with Overlord than that did (plus, if you were going to homage Overlord and had to pick just one mode, you'd go for the jet, surely?).

This is a very retro figure in a way. While the past few years have provided highly desirable Classics/Animated figures that really warranted a wider release, this guy's a throwback to the likes of CatScan, Shadow Striker and Windrazor - an arbitrary recolour of whatever Hasbro offered that nobody really wants and everyone will have forgotten in six months.

Banzaitron more or less worked, since he shared a similar theme. But, admittedly, it still looked like Bludgeon stole Banzaitron's paintjob instead. That mold is just way too distinctive.

FanPub has slowly been sliding into 3H territory by becoming a fanclub of themselves rather than of the Transformers franchise. This shouldn't be surprising, since it's a lot of the exact same people enabling this issue that did it for 3H as well.

Here we go, much much better. Only slight downside is that the head wasn't altered to be more female (maybe strap on Overlord's noggin? :) ) but it's pretty spot-on to how it should be. I see some reprolabel sales coming to 'correct' the sigils.

Cliffjumper
2011-12-30, 06:45 PM
While it was obviously forced on them, I've always liked the way Road Rage isn't remotely female (ditto BT Arcee). No need for them to have tits and curves just because they're female.

Plus this sort of thing happens when you let some retarded fanboy write an official biography twenty years after a figure's released. As long as we don't have ****ing Road Hauler all over again...

inflatable dalek

Plus, Evil Tracks presumably isn't supposed to be female anyway.

I'm actually surprised they haven't done "Road Hauler" from classics Grapple yet.

Seeing as (so far) two figures in the set are Diaclone throwbacks*, it's a shame the rest won't be following the same theme.

At any rate - yeah, this one isn't too shabby.

* - Though, this is the Transformers fandom we're talking about here -- it's probably a throwback to MB Tracks or "Back-Of-The-Box" Tracks. I can see the fiction now...

The SG Tracks looks sweet. I wonder how many people are actually going to slap a couple of red Autobot symbols on him and repurpose the figure as Road Rage. I've already repainted a RTS Tracks into Road Rage, though I do still need a flame decal for the hood. (I kept the rub sign too.)

*Way off the botcon topic, but I want to share a random thought.

So Decepticharge, the original mold that BT Arcee is made from, is just a BT Overdrive/ALT Windcharger with a new head & paint job. That head was originally designed to be Megatron. So wouldn't BT Arcee be like Super Shattered Megatron. :swirly:

I'm glad I went from Transformers to Gundam toys, honestly. This guy was supposed to be a 'centerpiece' for this year's set.. and it's rather uninspiring. Bad mold (honestly, the worst of the Classics-Verse by far), odd new head, and rather uninspired deco.

Take it with a grain of salt and a shot of tequila. :D

The remaining mold rumor list :

- Metalhawk (Generations THUNDERWING repaint with new head)
- Gigatron (Overlord) (Revenge of the Fallen BLUDGEON repaint with new head)-confirmed!
- Octopunch (Hunt for the Decepticons SEA SPRAY repaint with new head)
- Spinister (Hunt for the Decepticons TOMAHAWK repaint)
- Treadshot (Reveal The Shield JAZZ repaint)-confirmed!
- Kick Off (Reveal The Shield JAZZ repaint)
- SG Tracks (Reveal The Shield TRACKS red repaint)-confirmed!
- SG Ultra Magnus (Reveal the Shield G2 OPTIMUS PRIME repaint)
- SG Soundwave (Universe IRONHIDE repaint with new head)-confirmed!
- SG Junkions (possibly Wreck-Gar, Junkheap, and Scrapheap done in Insecticon colors)
- SG Swindle (Universe HOUND, this one strikes me as possibly incorrect because of how similar Swindle would be to BotCon 2011 Turbomaster and because of the gang molded Ravage)

/\* Did you pick up JP-DotM Vortex? Decent Tomahawk repaint/ remold.
(though it substituted the proper 3mm missiles w/ rubbish mechtech gun)

/\** Highbrow, (while not the namesake) is still pretty awesome.
High detail WWII plane. Pilot looking bot. KINDA reminds me of Gobot BOLT.

-Spinister, can easily have some Targetmasters retrofitted with 3mm clips.
So like you say, it's all about the colors. RotF Spinister was pretty decent for a str8 repaint and a legend. Hopefully that's a positive sign... but probably not related.

*Edit* Wishful Thinking : Since Treadshot is RUMOR'd to be a Jazz repaint, I hope they are going for UNIVERSE Treadshot, which was a car, and was in fact an unoffical DEAD-END homage, that would be delightful. Unless like the Universe figure it had his name painted on him. That would be annoying.*

So, SG Treadshot comes across the 'verse to become Classics Armada Stepper? (Since both Nightbeat and Sideswipe already exist of course.)

Well, for me, personally, 2 1/2 for 6 (SG Tracks/Road Rage, SG Treadshot/Stepper, and Metalhawk's Pretender mode). But I'm not paying the heavy amounts cash on these puppies, so live and let live anyway. :)

Further Thoughts

SG Tracks/Road Rage: Nice figure, nice Diaclone homage, works very well as Road Rage (for obvious reasons) except for the big honking symbol on her. I really wish FP had played up the repurpose aspect here and left it clean and included a reprolabel set just for her...

SG Treadshot/Stepper: Very pretty, if a bit bizzare with the homage. It's Battle in the Box Treadshot taking on a new body and nightbeat's colors, and he's Shattered Glass, and he visited Equestria to defeat Unicron with Mach Kick and Battle Unicorn! ...

Metalhawk: Pretty much as expected, the Pretender mode is very nice and should please fans looking for him. The jet mode is weak and poorly colored, but it's better than the original's jet mode. A mild positive for me.

Overlord: All the bitching aside, this one still does little for me. It's not really Overlord, it's "New Character Overlord" with G1 Overlord head strapped on Bludgeon's body after he took a bath in a blueberry vat. It's actually pretty in tank mode, but fails solidly as the homage it's meant to be.

SG Ultra Magnus: Doesn't do anything for me. It's evil Ultra Magnus with Scorge's body. What would have worked would have been to either have Ultra Magnus BE G1 Nemesis Prime, or a transition SG Optimus... Can't really repurpose this guy, and SG has active negative appeal to me.

SG Soundwave: Awful new headsculpt, and add-on purchase for the bandana, and worst mold of the entire Classics/Universe line-up, in nearly all white with a couple of tampos. Seriously, what's not to love about this guy? This is, perhaps, the second most idiotic exclusive to come out from the clubs - with the first being Cindersaur.

All in all, this is a pretty weak set. Other sets had a weak figure or two (like the Insecticon Drones, or Animated Motormaster's head) but either had good concepts or amazing figures to back them up. This has one outright awful figure, a pretty bad homage misfire, a bizzarely-chosen homage, a rather lame SG 'leader' attempt, and a couple of decent but not amazing figures.

All for the amazingly low price of $Way The **** Too Much.

Again, glad I went over to Gundam.

A big miss for me. Even at normal retail prices, I'd pass on all of these.

While, granted, Metalhawk is not a bad homage, he was a pants design to begin with, confounded by the gratuitous use of overhwhelming prime colours and gold.

So, to sum up, about the most obscure character is the best homage, and he's a hideous design to begin with.

I see this as a big win...

Oh, wait, it actually will be.

Overlord actually works in tank mode, suddenly that's a choice that makes sense. So that's him, Red Tracks (the purple-Autobrand doesn't bother me in terms of repurposing it as either Road Rage or Backofpackagingtracks, it actually makes sense to differentiate it from the all red body).

The others remain meh though. Mind, Classics have never just been G1 stuff so Sideswipe shouldn't be all that surprising in and of itself, even if it has to be something nobody in the world was waiting for.
