View Full Version : Is there a program that lets me remotely control my parents' computer?

In standard cliche fashion, my parents are calling me frequently about goofy computer problems that they can't figure out how to describe over the phone. "Windows 8 doesn't have Google. Where did my Excels go? Do I need to update DOS again?" Telling them to click on a tab usually winds up with them opening Free Cell or something like that.

Is there any way for me to take control of their computer from my house so that I can actually see and navigate on their computer? Are there any security risks with that, or would it be a pretty safe connection between just my computer and theirs?

Since PortableApps package TeamViewer, I'd guess that's a good choice for anyone outside a corporate network environment. Also available for mobile devices. Free for personal use.

I would THINK that it really depends on their and yours security suite.
Zonealarm, my security suite, does allow me to let certain programs have access to or to deny them access to the net.

This does seem like something I could have a use for, too.

Works fine, I'm typing this on a desktop via a tablet. Not optimistic about it doing video, though...

edit: Nope, not bad -- the desktop is an Atom-powered media PC, but despite some lag I can type into one window whilst watching a DVD on the right-hand of the screen and the video/audio passed through to the tablet.

There used to be a way to do it right through msn messenger. Unfortunately that's all j remember because in my family it was my dad helping me.
