Autobot cars

Not all, surely? Sideswipe, Red, Sunstreaker, Mirage (plus Diaclone 'red' variant and IIRC clear and black versions... none of the others have anything along these lines AFAIR, despite the potential of Deepcover, Clampdown, red Sunstreaker, Marlboor Wheeljack etc - difficult to get hold of sticker sheets to copy, whereas with Mirage it's on the paint mask?), Wheeljack, Smokescreen, Prowl.

I remember there was a Bluestreak in the offing a couple of years ago but I never saw it listed anywhere (and I wanted the box for my Anime Streak). Seem to have avoided anything in Encore (Hilux Brothers, Onebox Brothers, Jazz) or the later much-clearanced US reissues (Hoist, Skids, Grapple, Inferno, Tracks). Hound and Bluestreak are the only ones which don't fit either category.

Mind, with this sort of thing it's difficult twofold - one, they could be out there but really ****ing good; two, the things are verboten in a lot of fandom, which probably means a few more people are getting fooled than is strictly necessary (but are probably blissfully ignorant).

That's no watch, it's a Transformer. This thread has lied!

I keep meaning to get the Mirage and Wheeljack knock-off's.

There's Reflector to add to that list too (I have one - he's a great toy) and Dalek, I can highly recommend Mirage and Wheeljack.

And here's me with my massive rambles about not liking Third Party stuff, but happily possessing some other third party bootlegs. Sigh. I'm such a hipocrite!

Scorponok's a bit of an eyebrow raiser, and probably nobbles Takara's rumoured efforts to do the same, but then they still did Metroplex and Devastator after they'd been bootlegged (and Metroplex with the Metrotitan variant too...).

uh, so you can add them to the list too!

Is Scorponok really all that surprising? Headmasters actually seem like a reasonable choice to bootleg, all things considered. Finding a complete example isn't the easiest thing in the world, and prices are sky-high compared to most other toys from 87 and on. They'd probably have a big market for it.

Speaking of Headmasters, at least Weirdwolf, Minerva and Go-Shooter have been bootlegged recently if memory serves.

This reminds me that I found some pretty decent knock-offs of the Aerial Bots at last year in Family Dollar, part of their cram-in of Christmas toys. Probably be hard to find it now, but they might reproduce them again for this year's toy rush.

There was another set of knock-offs as well, another combiner team, but for the life of me I can't remember which. I'd have to go dig them out to jog my memory.

All of the combiners have been so heavily bootlegged that it could have been anyone, other than maybe the Seacons or Pretender Monsters (and for the former, Hasbro did a good enough job of making the reissue feel like a KO anyway...).

Have we ever gotten quality bootlegs of any combiners, though, on par with the recent cars and such? The only ones I'm familiar with are the dollar-store ones in zany packaging, which actually seem to have dried up a bit in recent years.

Yeah that sounds about like what I found. My first impression on seeing the packaging was "what the hell?" but a closer inspection let me figure out what the knock off was.

Most of the combiners got 'quality' bootleg treatment. Devastator (which comes in green, yellow, orange, and curiously, white and black), Menasor, Defensor, Superion and Computron. All in reproduced packaging.

Heard they were fairly spot on.

The bootlegged cars are excellent quality, often feeling strangely more authentic than some of the reissues; if they can do chrome and diecast okay I suspect they'd make mincemeat out of the blocks of plastic which make up the '86 combiners.

This is no surprise, since the bootleggers didn't have to invest any money into the development of the transformer. With copying being a cheeper process, they can put more money and effort into the production while still maintaining their profits.

That's not to say that all bootleggers do good. I've seen some horrific ones. But yeah, there are some that do nice.

I was under the impression the Autobot cars were a little more variable in quality than that? With Wheeljack and Mirage being excellent but some of the others a bit dodgier?

Mmmm...bootlegged Technobots. Tempting, tempting. The off-colour Devastators are pretty cool too, I have to admit. And considering how shitty Takara's reissue was the bootleg is probably a better quality product.

Really wish sellers wouldn't try to pass them off as the real thing, though. I guess that's a holdover from the eBay days when they started deleting bootleg auctions?

I don't think it's strange at all. Between the butchered weapons and missiles on Hasbro's releases and Takara's terrible QC and need to deface the toys with "cartoon accurate" modifications, the bootlegs probably are closer to the originals than the official reissues.

Actually, I think you've got it backwards. Hasbro and Takara already have the original molds (or at least the ones they haven't destroyed due to negligence...) and can crank out toys to their heart's content with no development work. The bootleggers need to reverse-engineer the toys first, and doing that to the level of quality you'd need to produce good replicas is actually quite expensive (which is why Hasbro and Takara have never bothered with reverse-engineering any of the Autobot cars/Dinobots they've managed to lose the molds for). That's why the good-quality KOs will cost you a lot of money while the crappy ones that anyone can crank out in their garage are dollar-store fodder.

Yes already having molds is cheaper than making molds, but making molds really isn't all that hard or expensive, the hard part is getting the original made. But you are correct, Hasbro really shouldn't have any toys that feel cheaper than a knock off since the work is already done, it's a matter of laziness or trying to maximize profits. That's what recolors are for :glance:

Just noticed this prototype on eBay -- looks like someone's seen the niche for an unofficial reissue/reconstruction of the Browning mould...

If true, will probably get one.

Cheers. Worth a punt, it'll hopefully be interesting to compare the more TF one with the Joustra imported redeco.

edit:

In other news, someone at TFW pointed out that the Cretaceous Advancement chest filler for FoC Grimlock is based on a LEGO part -- http://w.brickset.com/parts/?part=4609731 -- so I think it's time to try some basic custom stuff again.

Well, I saw a Fort Max Jr. KO on Ebay tonight painted as Robocop... in package.
