I've done a few searches on Google and can't come up with anything that's actually what I'm looking for advice on. For some reason, every time I download a file now it gets set to be shared with nobody on my Homegroup. I'm using the current version of Firefox, and I haven't changed any settings that I'm aware of in either Firefox or Windows. Any ideas?

Bizarrely, sharing the Downloads folder appears to have instead shared the Users folder. This is reproducible, I've just verified it two or three times, and others have noted the same issue...

That's insane.

I'd strongly recommend verifying that C:\Users isn't shared in your setup, or at least that full directory traversal isn't possible.

I think it is related to homegroups. When two computer joins a homegroup, the users can freely browse each others profiles (docs, pictures etc), because the homeusers group is given read permissions.

That's probably the underlying reason, tying in with the irritating Libraries feature (something I've disabled in Explorer via the registry) since they're virtual folders.

Even if recursive permissions aren't set, it shouldn't silently share a different folder to the one specified.

The weird thing is, I'm downloading to different folders, and all the folders I'm downloading to are supposed to be shared with read/write access to everyone on the homegroup. It just started a few weeks ago that every file I download (docs, exes, pdfs, etc.) have the gold padlock on them. I can change the setting on the file, so it's not like it's permanently locked. It's just annoying that I have to change the permissions on each file when I never had to before.

The bummer is that doing a Google search is coming up with all sorts of problems that aren't what's going on, and keywords of "firefox, win7, share, download" give you LOTS of different discussions. :(

Have updated the earlier post as I've been trying things... the setting that causes sharing of Users is use of the Sharing Wizard and then sharing a profile subfolder, irrespective of whether Homegroup functionality is enabled. Access to files belonging to files in folders of other profiles was verified, although using an admin account that would have access.

The problem you're having appears to be a known issue with current versions of Firefox, 26 onwards:

Thanks for all the articles. I just stumbled across a Mozilla forum myself where some other people had the same problem. Sounds like a possible fix is coming soon. Hopefully.
