Hugo Weaving to voice Megatron in the Michael Bay movie?

Apparently the viral advertizing website "Sector Seven" sent out the following mail:

Quote:

Operation Hungry Dragon 2 continues. As of today agent H. Weaving has officially convinced S.S., M.B., R.D and A.K. to oversee the Megaman issue. The recording will commence immediately.

All the years of investment into Agent Weavings public persona have finally paid off. We will monitor the campaign from the inside and report on its progress free from suspicion.

By this summer, the population will think N.B.E.'s are nothing more then figments of an overactive imagination.

Our power lies in our secrecy.
Weaving is best known for playing Agent Smith in the Matrix movies.

Thanks to Master Fwiffo for the news.

Someone has updated the wikipedia entry on Weaving to include Transformers. I know this doesn't really count as confirmation, but it's a start.

I'm going to have to find a few examples of his voice over work.

Quite a filmography behind him.

Maybe in your crazy world.

Where the rest of us live, he's best known for being in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Tetsuro 2007-03-24 11:37 AM

What about Elrond or V?

Megatimus 2007-03-24 11:40 AM

For all his roles, he's a superb actor with a very distinctive voice.

Considering this Megatron is more similiar to the Predacon Megs, maybe this is a good thing.

He was in V? Did he play the hamster?

markmilton 2007-03-24 02:30 PM

I think they mean V for Vendetta, not the V mini-series from the 80s.

Some of us do! :p

Could we have Kevin Bacon as Ironhide?

Anyhoo - Hugo's not a bad voice for the job. But what about poor Frank? Does his marvelous work as Nibbler not qualify him for instant Megatron reprisal role?

Halfshell 2007-03-24 05:57 PM

I'd rather have Agent Smith than the guy who did the noises for LL Cool J's parrot in Deep Blue Sea.

Actually, on second thoughts...

I thought it was funny.

And remember it's coming straight off the back of somebody responding to "rubbish - the only thing anybody ever remembers that he's been in is the one where he's a drag queen" with "but what about everything else he's been in?"

It's like the board's been surrounded by an "overly literal" field...

RID Scourge 2007-03-24 06:09 PM

Ooh, I like that.

Halfshell 2007-03-24 06:14 PM

You like that the board's been surrounded by an Overly Literal Field?

Quelle surprise.

RID Scourge 2007-03-24 06:18 PM

Damn straight. Everything should be taken at face value.

LKW 2007-03-24 07:46 PM

:( :( :( :(

Not that this version of Megatron particularly reminds me of the original, but if Peter Cullen is Optimus Prime, I would like to see the very versatile and accomplished Frank Welker as his opposite nuimber. Not to say that Hugo Weaving doesn't have a good voice - I could hear him saying "MISTER Witwicky";) But, while Ricardo Montalban has a great voice, dunno if I'd want him cast as Jazz. (Actually, he could be a nicely different take on Starscream...)

Anyway, it's too bad if Mr. Welker still wanted the role and didn't get it. And the producers seem to want to have their cake and eat it, too - casting one of the original voice actors to appease the fans, but then not any of the other (surviving) originals. Either it's a completly new take or it's not, it seems to me.

But according to imdb
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0418279/
Frank is listed as doing Megatrons voice...

So what? IMDB isn't always accurate, especially with stuff that isn't even out yet.

That has been up for a while...

It's too bad, but not too bad about Frank.

Did we all hear Welker's new Megatron demo from a few months back? Welker didn't sound much like the old Megatron.

Anyways it's not like Frank is hungry for work, the guy is in everything, And I think Weaving will make a great evil Megatron.

"never send a human to do a machine's job".genius.

Reflector 2007-03-24 11:54 PM

*prays. sorta.*

I still think this is the greatest idea Bay's ever had/entertained. Weaving's perfect for the part, and Welker would just ruin it. They'd need to do way too much vocal processing to make Welker sound legitimately evil, especially in his Megatron voice. Weaving's much more natural at spewing venom.

Can't wait.

Serves to prove that IMDB entries for movies that aren't out yet are worth ****.

Still waiting for Steve Buscemi to get cast in this thing. Him and Bay have a symbiotic relationship

Cliffjumper 2007-03-25 05:03 PM

Yeh, I've never been a fan of Welker's Megatron... too much of a reminder of a character totally unable to pose any sort odd danger - not just his fault as the writers put the words in his mouth, but at the same time Megatron always sounded so slow and thick. Cullen I'm down with, Chalk always sounded a bit too 'young' for me. Of the past Megatrons I'd throw my hat in with Kaye, because he sounded so menacing and charming at the same time - never really knew what sort of mood he was in...

Pun-3X 2007-03-25 08:04 PM

Agreed, I was never a fan of Welker being this Megs.

Really, I wasn't too picky about Megatron's voice in this. Hugo would definitely fit the bill if this is true.

I had forgotten about that, good point. If he does get added to the cast...I wonder who he'd be?

They seem to have made it official on superherohype.com

Certainly in the Prequel comic it's easier to hear Kaye (and indeed Weaving) saying the lines than Welker.

[That sentence is to be taken at face value].

Cliffjumper 2007-03-26 01:18 PM

Personally, I 'hear' Kaye most of the time for Megatron, especially when there's anything approaching menace coming from the bloke - G2, for example. Imagine Welker saying any of that... no, somehow two years before he was cast, that's Kaye voicing the lines. I can see Megaclone being Kaye as well - the normal Megatron (i.e. the one who's in most of the US series, and is thick) sounds like Welker.

If Megatron was just going to make animal noises, be filtered into next week or be an annoying cock with an omlette on his stupid, deformed face I'd be all for Welker. If the intentions are anything else, he's not the man for the job.

inflatable dalek 2007-03-26 01:26 PM

Well, Movie Megs does have the stupid deformed face part down pat.

Osku 2007-03-26 07:35 PM

Not a bad choice. :)

About the same. Assuming you're talking about Kaye's performance from BW/BM. Not familiar with his work on Armada/Energon/Cybertron.

Now that I think about it, I don't even remember how Megatron from original series sounds like.

Megatimus 2007-03-26 08:25 PM

Very raspy. Deeper than Starscream though. But Kaye is the Megatron which the film has qualities of.

Sixswitch 2007-03-26 08:43 PM

The problem for me is that Welker's Megatron is very obviously a 'cartoon' voice. A very good cartoon voice (in my opinion), but this is supposed to be a live action film, so I think we need something a little more 'realistic' (yes I know we're talking about giant 40 foot robots). Kaye would be my choice between the two cartoon actors, but Hugo Weaving would also be excellent.

Just for the record, in my personal opinion, Frank Welker's Megatron is the second greatest villain voice of all time, behind only James Earl Jones' Darth Vader.

But, that voice may not belong with the razor-toothed character of the Bay film... and Peter Cullen could well be out of place, too.

Markus 2007-04-02 01:04 AM

steve buschimi would be a great bumblebee, imo.

HAHA, I could hear that.

SenahBirdR 2007-04-02 08:48 AM

I always found Cullen's voice to have a paternal comfort to it. There is some sternness and some sadness to his Prime voice at times, especially the movie. If they go with the classic prime characterization, a working stiff doing his duty, then I think he fits the movie. The flame paint makes me wonder if this Prime is going with a more standard action hero characterization, but I'll wait for the movie.

Welker's Megatron I always found fascinating. A great villian voice in my opinion, yet I do agree that it is a cartoon villian's voice and would fail a bit on the big screen. Kaye's is another great one too. Very different and more suave. However, I think he lacks a certain power to his voice that would be needed to this role. Almost too human. My imagination places the Megatron as very coldly evil. Hugo Weaving can do different voices. My hope is that he does a deeper crisp and terse mode of speech. The almost drawl of Agent Smith is unnecessary in my mind, but certainly pull forth some of the calculating hatred that he used in that role. I want Megatron to come across as cold inevitability (heh), the voice of an uncaring Tyrant that barely recognizes the existence of others.

I am going to trust that the right decisions were made and wait for the movie. Actors can heavily surprise us.
