I wonder if they could bypass it by calling him
Decepticon Shockwave like they did with the Jazz reissue and TFU's Autobot Ratchet granted they could use him for the cartoon unless he was like Battle Ravge and Divebomb endless cannon fodder.

Hang on - wasn't Tidal Wave known as Shockwave in Japan?

Perhaps it's "Shockblast" in order to avoid confusion? If it isn't, I can't see why they couldn't have used something like "Shock Wave" or "Shockkwave" or something along those lines.. or maybe it's a just an "up yours G1 fanboy" thing?

Maybe that was it.

Then I read this.

The toy's gonna be called Shockblast. Because Hasbro lost the rights to the Shockwave name.

Default Shockwave name lost

According to Siebertron.com Hasbro has lost the name Shockwave to a Hong Kong company. Read about it here. http://www.seibertron.com/energonpub...=612886#612886

Well, we can always pretend he got into a fight to the "death" with Ironhide or someone, and was renamed and rebuilt, Soundwave/Soundblaster-style.

Maybe?

well they can't for legal reasons, but I'm sure the company who owns the name would be willing to let hasbro use it if they paid them, but hasbro is too cheap.

What have Mattel got to do with the price of bread?

Yep. But that's a different market. Takara can register the trademark for use in Japan, Hasbro have to register it seperately for use in the US, and again for use in Europe (an example of that being Jawbreaker's name change).

Too similar.

You apply to trademark a name for use in a certain market, then it gets cross-referenced against all similar registered names in that market and the owners of those respective trademarks have the right to veto the application.

Or at least that's how it works in the UK.

Ah, yes... Hasbro. Sorry, I've been paying more attention to other toy manufacturers recently.

^^^ Treat with pinch of salt, but it's as reasonable a suggestion as any.
