Funny thing is, the original Green Lantern story that inspired the term wasn't explicitly graphic. Most of it happened in people's heads.

Oh, speaking of... it's happening in reverse now too. See the pilot of "Alias" (the TV show, not the comic)...

A bit. If a comics storyline wants to get a team stirred up about the loss of one of their own, odds are extremely high that the casualty will be a female character or a kid sidekick. The bulk of TV also tends not to feature female characters rescuing the male ones on a regular basis -- Joss Whedon in particular has managed to pleasantly shake up the stereotypes.

That's because female 'superhero' characters near-universally suck. I mean, looking at the stack of trades next to me, we're talking Jenny, Jakita, Kitty Pryde for about 12 months and Avril (actual Avril, not the sk8r chick from Infiltration, for once I'm actually using the name to refer to someone who has that name). Even powerful (as in possessing lots of power) female characters like Storm, Angie or The Scarlet Witch are usually up for a good blub as soon as the chips are down...

Seriously, I bet a good chunk of it is because the female characters in most superhero books are the ones that people wouldn't miss - just rope in another slut with a bust that could be used as a mantlepiece, and you're away.

Maybe I'm totally desensitised through having far too much porn, but there's nothing in that manga that bothers me sex-wise. I mean, it;'s exploitative crap, but I doubt it's going to bring in the paedos/hentai freaks - they can probably get better **** elsewhere. There probably are a couple of Transformers fans out there who'd bang one out to the stuff, but we've had at least one member admit they'd do the same over Arcee et al.

Half of the people posting in disgust are only doing so because of metaphorical nudges in the ribs from others, anyway. You don't like it, don't endorse the stuff; if it totally disgusts you, maybe not opening topics with links to scans of the manga with keep your Daily Heil outrage in check

That'd certainly be my assumption, and also reflect the experience of those I know who've been to Japan. As for online, it'd be surprising if there was any form of comic porn that wasn't around -- not having to pay people to act in it is the same reason things usually explode more in cartoons; no extra budget is required.

Which in itself is a problem -- many writers can't do credible female characters, and go back to such wonderfully subtle shorthand as "male interest turns out to member of league of assassins --> tubs of ice-cream"...

I do 'do' fairy tales and myths. Red Riding Hood is, actually, quite tame. As Pterry says, you can tell it's for the kiddies cos it's got lots of blood in it. He could well have added 'it's got s-e-x', but no doubt would have been censored/censured, especially if Nanny said it...

Most of the folklore etc we have today has been filtered by the Victorians. Maybe we still have their attitudes. Whatever - I will not be touching this manga with a metaphorical bargepole.

Mmm.

In the time of Louis XIV there was sometimes seduction before the devouring.

Exactly, dear. Let's not even consider Sleeping Beauty in case there are minors reading this thread...
