Default Activision's Transformers game details

First Transformers Details Revealed
Activision announces platforms, gameplay tidbits and more.
by Jeremy Dunham

February 9, 2007 - It's been exactly a year since Activision last said anything about its game based on Michael Bay's upcoming robot movie, Transformers -- and even then, explicit information about the title was closely guarded (specific consoles hadn't been named; the developers weren't identified, etc). But after 52 weeks of nothing, our contacts at Activision have finally come clean and given us a couple of details to work with.

Officially known as Transformers: The Game, the Traveller's Tales-developed actioner is scheduled for just about every platform out there (PC, PS2, PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360) and will come out this summer with nearly identical content. Its storyline will follow the movie closely, giving players control over both the Autobots and the Decepticons as they choose to either protect the earth or pimp slap it.

The final number of playable characters is still unknown, but Activision has confirmed that Optimus Prime, Megatron, Starscream, Bumblebee, and Ironhide are among them. Each bot has their own set of special skills and abilities too, and gamers will be able to switch between robot and vehicle form at any time. Fully destructible environments (including entire buildings and vehicles) and the ability to use wreckage as weapons are also expected.

Combat mechanics still aren't very clear, but developers do say that each character's scale and weight affects how they fight. Both ranged and melee battles are possible as well, and there are a few other elements that haven't been expanded on yet.

You too will be able to scare the bejesus out of a pack of buff guys.
Handheld fans should also take note that PSP and DS versions are in the works from Savage and Vicarious Visions respectively. No details about the Dual Screen edition were made public, wowever, we do know that the PSP edition boasts 20 playable Autobots and Decepticons and follows an expanded telling of the movie's storyline (complete with bot customization and ad hoc/ infrastructure multiplayer modes).
Sounds a lot like the Transformers PS2 game, and I'm not really expecting much since it's a movie license and the movie's doing anything for me anyway. I guess the braindead diehards will eat it up anyway.

As long as there's a special feature that unlocks either Dropshot or Daytonus as a playable character, I'm a happy boy.

ugh, sounds like they should've just let Melbourne House do the bloody game, least they had the engine already in place.

Didn't the Armada PS2 game go down well, then? The opposite seems to be the case from feedback at the time...

The PS2 game was a whole lot of fun, except for the fact that the game took every opportunity to punish you for transforming. Usable gadgets, shields and weapons on the alt-modes would go a long way to making a pretty hoopy game.

actually doesnt sound all too reminiscent of the Armada PS2 game actually

completely different style of play.

i would say that large maps and the fact that its transformers is about as far as the similarities go

Armada was more an over the shoulder shooter, while this one seems to be a Grand Theft Auto/Spiderman/Hulk:Ultimate Destruction free-for-all pounder [with weapons thrown in]

i for one am very excited to see some actual footage

sounds like a sweet sweet game

just the amount of playable characters and the fact we get to play as the decepticons makes me drool

That's good, those cutscenes were beautiful.

Sounds like a fun "blow stuff up" kind of game.

Not really since cutscenes outside of the game's engine are either throwbacks to the previous generations or indicative of the actual game engine being so ugly that cutscenes using it aren't aesthetically feasible.

I'd like to point out that videogames are second only to politicians in hyping and promising and not delivering the goods. Whatever you will read about this game you should all take with a grain of salt until the reviews are out.

This is not some game where they picked up the Transformers license and decided to do something with it, it's a game based on a movie license and with a few exceptions, those have a godawful track record. In fact, off the top of my head, I can only think of two critically successful movie-based games. The Chronicles of Riddick and King Kong. Riddick was developed by a studio that was passionate about the franchise and Vin Diesel had a financial interest and had a lot of creative control, and King Kong had an acclaimed designer that was hand-picked by Peter Jackson because he (Jackson) didn't want the game to be made like other movie license games. As in, he didn't want something that just had a bunch of cliche, half-assed gameplay elements thrown together by an inexperienced or inattentive team that had to rush it out by the movie's release date.

Default More on the TF games

Couple more articles from IGN on the upcoming games, I pulled the console one from their wii section but apply's to all consoles this early on. Gives a little more detail on gamestyle/graphics etc. Sounds like it'll either turn out pretty good or it'll be a steaming pile.

Bit on the mobile version only glanced at as I not really interested in mobile games.

If G1 Megatron is one of the unlockable characters, perhaps then people will realize how utterly worthless his alt mode is without someone to operate him.

Looks a little grainy around the edges - my guess is, it could very well be in-game. Very nice, too.
