That thing about reissues as retailer exclusives in 2009 sounds like a possible U.S release of Encore Trailbreaker and Hoist...

And why exactly would Hasbro reissue those two out of all the toys/characters they could release?

Hmm, let me count the ways.

1. Trailbreaker wasn't released here before.

2. Neither Trailbreaker nor Hoist are receiving Universe toys, unlike Prowl, Silverstreak, Ironhide, or possibly Ratchet.

3. Megatron can no longer be reissued, and I think the Datsun mold is kaput, so that only leaves Jazz, the Seekers, and Tracks, all of which have been reissued before.

So yes, U.S releases of Trailbreaker and Hoist seem the most likely. If I'm right, Trailbreaker will be mine.

I think the question is more: why would Hasbro bother reissuing characters with such minimal appeal? Original Prime reissues tend to fly off the shelves, but that's about it.

Yeh, the last batch of reissues sold very badly aside from Op - Classics Soundwave doesn't seem to have done badly, and I suspect that'll set the pattern for any future Hasbro reissues - someone like Optimus Prime or Starscream put out under the Universe banner.

Hoist was basically one of the reasons the Commemorative Series stopped in the first place, and Trailbreaker's really not much more high-profile (plus there's the ongoing trademark problem they have with the character). Hasbro seemed to cotton on that on something that sold largely to converts, releasing the same stuff Takara had done months before wasn't the best move - too many of the target market will import beforehand.

I think assuming toys that have recently been polished up by Takara being used is a reasonable assumption, but I think the more likely options are ones that share names with Movie characters being put out around the time the sequel comes out (So Starscream pretty much a certainty, possibly Ratchet and Ironhide at a pinch. Soundwave has probably been done to recently and Optimus is getting a more general reissue isn't he?).

Hell, Prime is already out at my Wal-Mart. Didn't realize G1 Toys were so small as I have never seen one in person before.

When does the Movie line start up? The Q&A mentions reissues coming in Fall 2009.

Well, I don't see why they would release old toys that are namesakes of the new Movie toys while the new Movie toys are on the shelves.

Twenty somethings go to the film, get a big nostalgia "I had Ironhide when iIwas a kid! Great toy" and next time they're in Toys R Us with the kids they see Starscream and pick him up on a mad impulse is the theory.

Will there be a followup to Transformers: Animated with similarly-styled figures? If not, will we see "Animated" figures in the TFU line? My favorite TFA figures are the ones that look like charicatures of G1 characters.
