Yep, i'm not even sure which of the two white robots front and centre on that one cover is supposed to be Drift.

[toy] I think the vehicle mode is okay. I visit Drift every time I'm at my brother's place. I haven't transformed it yet though... I prefer to visit it in car mode, lest I not like it after it's been transformed.

... It's a bit like a shallow guy refusing to visit or take out his latest girlfriend until she's all made up, wearing ridiculous high heels, a tight dress and a padded, push up bra. Drift is a 10 imo in vehicle mode, but robot mode? I don't wanna see that shit. Keep it away. [/toy]

Possibly...the character hasn't really done anything to really tick me off and it's quite nice to see a new TF to be honest. Cliche as he is, I really don't mind him.

Is that Dai Atlas telling Drift to "GTFO"?

Looks like him, and considering the characters on the other covers don't have much in the way of distinguishing features I'd say it probably is.

"Hey people likes the Wreckers comic, and that had obscure Japanese guys in it. If I stick some on my comic it'll rock. Plus Drift must be Japanese because he's a ninja so it's thematically right".

But I thought Sixshot was the ninja in Japanese continuity.

Frankly I'm surprised McCarthy knows that Dai Atlas exists. Or is that an elaborate easter egg by Milne?

Nah, by Ninja Consultant he just means he's the guy who consults on ninjas rather than the ninja who consults on stuff. Like flower arranging.

Like Roadbuster in AHM he's the token non cartoon guy who was picked by clicking random page on the wiki.

But he can disappear and split himself into six and has secret weapons and do all sort of stuff anime ninjas do...

Roadbuster seems to be more of the token Wrecker, IMO. Or he's the toy that Shane had as a kid. Deluge feels more like a guy taken from the Wiki. 'I need a scientist. Hmmm. Okay, let's see the Wiki. Here's a G2 guy. I'll use him and kill him off.'

Serious question: does anyone care or need to know where drift comes from?

Unless it leads into the sludge that costa is writing for ongoing, whats the point of this? I've a sad feeling that this will be an origin story for a caracter which, at the best of times, hasnt made much impact, and in all fairness no one cares about and no-one has a reason to care about. Basically, IDW are starting a race from standing here to make this any way good.

Speaking of Impact, I would much rather a origin story for LSOTW Impactor. Now thats a character.

100% agreed!

Now that reminds me of Autopedia and I wonder why IDW are doing another reprint (they're doing this, or am I wrong?) of DW's MTMTE instead of starting such a thing on their own. By the number of issues published this would be far more justified than DW's was.

Drift is like Dawn Summers from Buffy the Vampire Slayer: inserted into the continuity fairly late on and eventually explained.

It appeared to me that Dawn was introduced as a way to try to boost ratings. The plot could have taken various other directions but the show needed more viewers.

3 seasons from 7 isnt fairly late on though is it?

Anyway, its going to need to be pretty damn good to justify itself. Cant see it being massively relevent to the ongoing (altough I'm sure it will have a few links) so its going to sell itself on its story. Maybe the shorter issue run will help McCarthy be a bit more focused. Heres hoping.

Plus the explanation was built in, just not immediately explained. It wasn't like they added Dawn to the show and then suddenly went "OMFG! How are we going to explain this?!?", she was introduced with her explanation built in, and not revealed the the audience until later for dramatic reasons.

252 posts and we're still waiting for one that isn't stupid.

"Later" still being "within four episodes".

Plus her presence was integral to the entire season arc. Drift's presence is integral to nothing other than Drift's presence.
