That's not necessarily an official photo, plus there's plenty of reasons factions may team up within the fiction.

It wasn't that he couldn’t combine, it was the fact that with his Powerlinx points he he could actually look decent on other moulds.. I think one of them was Jetfire and the other was Overload. Their were many others but those are only two that looked decent enough.

I don't see what's all the fuss about. He can just combine with the Megatron toy.

Doesn't mean he'll do it in the show as well. Red Alert could superlink with Rodimus Convoy as an upper body, but that was never featured in the show either.
