That magnificent 80ies tune
Loving the cover thread we have, so I thought we'd have something similar but for a different genre. Loving my Cash/Nelson/Young music but every once in a while I want some 80ies beat to keep me going.
Doing so I've found some iconic 80ies tunes and whatnot I hadn't listened to in decades!
Post away!
Fire away, more will come shortly!
PS: Hope I'm doing the right thing with the youtube links and they'll show properly!
PS2: No they didn't. How do I make them show up with a preview like on the cover thread?

Few stuff in the UK to trade/sell. Measly sales thread.
Another thread I could spend days posting in.
Well, let's just start with one, because I pulled it up and now I don't want to stop listening to it.

80's country music? Why, don't mind if I do.
IT'S SO TWANGY.
An aunt of mine loved this type of music, she used to babysit me and when she did, she'd listen to this stuff.

I grew up with a father who loved Hank Williams Jr. (and still does not as much though). The 80s were the only time Hank Williams Jr. had any real great hits before he batshit insane (just avoid stuff like"The South is Gonna Do It Again" and some other songs unless you can stand is pro-Confederacy nonsense). I never did like Dwight Yoakam i would rather listen to nails on a chalkboard than listen to him sing through his noise.Sades wrote:80's country music? Why, don't mind if I do.

I would recommend the following songs:
"He Stopped Loving Her Today" by the late great George Jones
"The Christmas Visitor" (I think that is the title) by Grandpa Jones you can probably only hear his version from an episode of Hew-Haw. I know that Reba McEntire did a recent new version of it. It's a beautiful Christmas song about a lonely man who waits for God to visit him for Christmas dinner.
My first music record a Dukes of Hazard record that was just plain stupid fun to listen too (even if most of the actors couldn't sing to save their lives).
IMHO the best Country Music is from the 90s and PM me and I can provide you with a huge list of suggestions of CDs and songs if you want.
Please visit Outlaw Colony my new message board it's a fun site for fun people.
That's funny actually, as I was never big on Hank Williams Jr in much the same way. Just was never someone I enjoyed listening to.
George Jones has some fantastic stuff however. Golden Ring was a favourite, and I still think I Don't Need Your Rocking Chair is amusing.

Ah hah, I grew up in what is essentially Canada's Texas. I definitely know a little bit about Country Music in the 90's. I wouldn't necessarily say it was better IMO - I have a lot of nostalgic faves from the 70's-80's and earlier but it's definitely not bad. It was definitely more "polished". Some of my favourite stuff comes from the 90's. For sure, send that list. I like music, and musical trips down memory lane.Cyberstrike nTo wrote: IMHO the best Country Music is from the 90s and PM me and I can provide you with a huge list of suggestions of CDs and songs if you want.

Alabama (the band not the state) had some great songs in the 80s and 90s and they were probably the one of best Country music bands in the 80s.Sades wrote:That's funny actually, as I was never big on Hank Williams Jr in much the same way. Just was never someone I enjoyed listening to.

My favorite song of their is "Angels Among Us" and it is one of the beautiful songs in any genre. I highly recommend it to everyone here to listen even if you hate Country music give it a listen (and despite it's name, it's not a religious song). I used to have a 2 disc set that had 40 of the best songs from Alabama I ripped both CDs to the HD of my original Xbox (the first version) and I didn't have broadband so I didn't have XBL (I didn't get XBL until I got my Xbox 360) had to list all the songs by typing them out which was very time consuming. Still got them too.
Sadly about half of my CDs were lost (most of them were the ones I was playing at the time) when me and my dad had to move. I just haven't had the interest in getting new copies (and in some cases that would be in terms of my wrestling entrance music CDs since finding some like WCW Mayhem-The Music was hard for me to find when it was new) or used copies that aren't scratched up to death. Also the only CD players I have are my PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. I sometimes play some music I installed on Xbox 360's HD when I'm playing the ME3 multiplayer.
I grew up in Indianapolis in the 90s and was constantly having Pop, Hip-Hop, Metal, and Grunge shoved down my throat by my school mates, so in hindsight Going Country (I know a very cheap joke) with my taste in music was my way rebelling against people at school.Ah hah, I grew up in what is essentially Canada's Texas. I should probably note that there's not a lot of 80's in this post. Sorry.
A favourite by Alabama was "I'm In A Hurry", thanks YouTube sidebar! It's gonna be a "mid-late 90's Country" afternoon from the looks of things...
I still have a ton of CD's in boxes somewhere, but I'm probably going to clear them out. I'm fighting a losing battle against "stuff" right now (probably will do so for the rest of my life now, ha) and closet space is at a premium.
I think it's mainly that I've found some awesome shit that way that I never would have found otherwise. Probably why I love music threads so much. Tied to that, YouTube has that "suggestions" sidebar and it is my very best friend. I can be pretty emo sometimes, but I think I've "grown out of" that, as people do (actually may be emo in a different way, heh). Usually now it's just the loud stuff when I'm in a mood (best in combination with exercise). I also really like swearing in songs as long as it's well-placed and not overdone. IMO it can be kind of satisfying, like audial bubble wrap. I like sap, too, though Hound gets/used to get all embarrassed when I directly post any sappy stuff so I can't do that too much anymore. Video-wise, I think now it's usually the stuff that makes me happy/makes me want to go "LOOKATTHIS"/I want to "save" in a thread for random listening as well as sharing with anyone who might want to listen.
Back to mid 90's Country, I liked Reba. Garth Brooks, Vince Gill, All the big names in the 90's for the most part. That "Chris Gaines" shit was weird, back in the day.
Give me a couple of hours, there will probably be a bunch of links edited into this thread.
Edit: Here's the first! John Michael Montgomery, "Life's a Dance" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7k4ujBGRGf8
Ahhh, Randy Travis! I loved his stuff, I did. Still do apparently! It's so simple and lovely. Though I just googled him and laughed my ass off at the expression on his face in the mugshot I found...
"Deeper Than The Holler" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ffo3yKFjYmA
"Forever and Ever, Amen" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptDBuNlbG0A
"Diggin' Up Bones" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JVIUaqC0gM
Garth Brooks- Gotta be "The Dance". Though I can't find the video that I saw growing up... was a vid putting it into context with the Challenger shuttle explosion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpwdwbO1uvM
The Rankin Family- They kinda fit. Sorta. They're kinda Country. They were amazeballs.
They're Canadian, which means it's probable that no one knows who they are.
"Fare Thee Well, Love" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6-mo4jS8VI
"North Country" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXlbI9wDxUs
"Rise Again" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hffAItzLj2A

"Endless Seasons" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beZDJopw6n8
SO. GOOD. I forgot how good their stuff was. I'm going to need to buy/find all of it now, dammit.
I remember them, they were pretty big back when when I was growing up. I can't recall a song off of the top of my head though I'm pretty sure they covered a Christmas song or two that I liked.Cyberstrike nTo wrote:Alabama (the band not the state) had some great songs in the 80s and 90s and they were probably the one of best Country music bands in the 80s.
looked it up, I remember this one. I liked it when I was younger. I gotta say I disagree, I think it's pretty religious. The song is more or less saying "hey, these people are real-life guardian angels, it's not a coincidence. GAWDDIDTHIS"."Angels Among Us"

I used cassette tapes until the late 90's. I had a handful of CD's, but tons of cassette tapes. Used to record radio songs. Once I was working regularly, most of my money went to CDs. Beyond that, I more or less had a set of headphones permanently attached to my head.Sadly about half of my CDs were lost (most of them were the ones I was playing at the time) when me and my dad had to move. I just haven't had the interest in getting new copies (and in some cases that would be in terms of my wrestling entrance music CDs since finding some like WCW Mayhem-The Music was hard for me to find when it was new) or used copies that aren't scratched up to death. I didn't want to rebel so much as to be accepted for at least a portion of that formative time way back when (I think the "**** everyone" mentality developed later), so I pretty much listened to anything anyone else thought was cool for a long time. A lot like I do now, when I'm in a positive state of mind. Though now I do it for... maybe not "different" reasons, because there's still that element of common ground that I like, but for "added" reasons.I grew up in Indianapolis in the 90s and was constantly having Pop, Hip-Hop, Metal, and Grunge shoved down my throat by my school mates, so in hindsight Going Country (I know a very cheap joke) with my taste in music was my way rebelling against people at school.

I was unaware until this moment that "Push it" was an 80's tune. I am happy to see/hear it...! I just sort of mentally group it in with their 90's stuff, I think.
That Randy Travis stuff haunted me last night. I had to fire up YouTube in the middle of the night to get rid of it. It's going to be a long-ass time before I listen to any Randy Travis again.
The reason I'm here: HOW DOES THIS THREAD NOT HAVE ANY HEART IN IT? I was obsessed with Heart in the early/mid-90's.
(though this is technically 70's, I need to post this here as when I said the above to Hound, I was listening to Barracuda and he was all "You've got to put some Barracuda up in this shit!" . Soooo just think of it as my way of balancing out all of the EXCELLENT IMO 90's Country)
"What about Love" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfnNn-0rMgk
"Never" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjeeXfuViRU

So much for balancing out the 90's stuff. This was done in '90 I'm pretty sure. But it's a classic.

This is my signature. My wasted space. My little corner. You can't have it. It's mine. I can write whatever I want. And I have!
