That's hilarious, but not entirely surprising. I've dealt with Verizon before. Nothing quite like this, but I've spent far too many hours trying to convince them that they are wrong.
I admire the man's patience and applaud his check writing skills.

Not to excuse them boys at ENRON or WorldCom a bit, but if any CEO or CFO magaged his company's books like Congress did there wouldn't be a hole deep or dark enough to throw them in ... and Congress would be leading the lynch mob.

Nice touch with the summation. The only other "1 based stunts" that come to my mind are:

phi^2 - phi = 1
i^2n = -1^n
0! = 1
