I need help with perl

Post by Sixswitch »

Anyone know any decent tutorial sites? I have to make a library system for a piece of uni coursework. Basically all I need is a way of searching through a series of .txt files for a certain key (input from the web through a form). The text files will be stored on the server.

Anyone have any ideas?

You're about as useful as a wet paper bag. Reasons why this won't work:

1. Unix is an OS. Perl is a programming language.
2. I HAVE to use Perl. I have no choice.

Oh, Brend, you're useless too, but we already knew that.

Actually, that's an allegation. Not fact.

And only Casper's allowed to suggest otherwise without fear of pissing me off.

Well be more useful next time, then I won't have to...

I think this might be a case of being all too willing to take the mick, but unwilling to recieve back? I mean, I've no problem with you posting a smart/jokey reply, as long as you can accept an equally jokey/smart response.

Thanks Jim, by the way. One of those sites was most useful.

What? Wow, you're stupid.

I'd love to help, Sixsw, but I'm only just getting to grips with writing to guestbooks and stuff, not file 'I' as well as 'O'... I can tell you that CHMOD is your friend, and if you want a straightforward notepad-type text editor with quick conversion to UNIX linebreaks (useful if working with WinPCs), give 'metapad' a whirl:

Perl is great; it holds about three-quarters of dynamic content across the web together! :D

Because jokes typically involve humour.

Anyone know any straightforward methods of implementing custom date display in Perl without having to fuss around with arrays and stuff?

No, I can't see it. Unless acting dumb counts as humour, drawing irrelevant parallels between two dissimilar things isn't amusing.
