Meister?????

Post by SoundCrush »

If the new Meister alternator looks so much like Jazz, why didn't Hasbro just call it Jazz? What's a meister anyway?

They couldn't get the copyright for the name (thus why the Jazz reissue is called Autobot Jazz), and they got tired of sticking Autobot on the front of names for those cases. Meister was Jazz' original name in Japan, so they opted to call the Alternators one that.

You can't copyright a name. You can trademark it, though.

Wow, I'd forgotten how grating the pedant angle is from the receiving side...

Oh, by the way, Aaron Archer (chief Hasbro TF designer) gives you permission to call your toys whatever the hell you want. Most of them don't have their names scribed on them these days, thank goodness.

Don't worry, I've been through worse discussions with someone who claimed Takara can't name a toy "Shockwave" because they don't own the "patent" (that being based on the correct observation that neither Hasbro nor Takara own the rights to the ToyCo mold, but then, that has nothing to do with the name Shockwave, which had been attached to the mold by Hasbro in the first place). ;)

Meister = champion, so a "Weltmeister" at something is a world champion

Since we're going off-topic, anyone else find a British person using Merriam Webster's dictionary as a reference amusing?

I know you can't be unfamiliar with Webster's views on "Americanizing" English and all that fun stuff. Tickled me to see someone cite a source that would contradict himself. Illyria's a sillypants.

I use m-w when illustrating things to Americans. For normal folks, I use other sources.

Besides, meister's not covered by the "Americanising English" thang, as the word's German. :p

Thanks for that info y'all. I wonder how many years it will take to make the entire world to speak American English? If you think about it, if you put a Norweigan and an Italian in a room, lock the door, and leave, the only way they can communicate is with body language or English. I guess me and my stupid Americans' stubbornness is actually good for something!

If we ever someday have a global language, it'd most likely be Chinese.

That's really assuming the Chinese manage to dominate the planet under a global regime, otherwise, highest population or no, the language of the superpowers will continue to dominate.
