Im not in favor, seeing as I would have nothing to make an avatar... ;)

Didn't this board previously allow avatars, a long time ago? My memory from back then is fuzzy, I might be thinking of a different board.

[edit: Woah, 1600 posts? coulda sworn I had just had my 1337 one about a month ago...]

there used to be avatars, but only mods/admins could use them. I think it only lasted like a couple months or something. If we're trying to find ways to get more people to post, why not experiment?

Those weren't avatars. They were HTML in the user title field.

When we work out appropriate filesize/dimension limits, there's a stronger change they'll be allowed. Any suggestions, post them in this thread.

25k ??

Most of the sigs I make are sub 25k so how in the hell you can get a 100x80 image that size and it not be animated...

Damn, even the Scorponok image at the top is just over 17k!!

Thanks, I needed a laugh

An avatar is a little picture that is seen under your username when you post. It's usually right above your CUT (Custom user text).

I'm thinking more like 64x48, 4kb max.

Bear in mind both that the board software would auto-admin this and that sigs of up to 40kb are allowed. Mitigating this is that avatar display can be turned off independently under 'user options' in our control panels.

EDIT: http://www.vbulletin.com/manual/avatars.html

^^^ That's what they look like.

again, I see myself only making this board better as usual.

I say we could do 60X60 and have like a 7-8K max OR have a bigger max 30-40 and if people dont want them, they can turn them off OR get rid of sigs (pictures) and only allow Avatars

Avatars are small. A 30-40 kb avatar would have to be animated AND a bitmap in order to get to that size....

And yes, I know bitmaps cant be animated... thats the point.

I say keep it around 3kb.

I said max. I didnt know an exact # so I just threw it in. Its not like anyone will have one that size anyway.

I don't really see the need for them. We have sigpics, and that's enough. Avatars are just lame.

How about maximum size 100 x 100 (Livejournal icon size), 10 K?

And I think I'd be good if we could have avatars.

I've given Sky about ~150 sample avatars at my suggested resolution, so we'll see what he thinks of 'em...

Why bother. Just let users use their own, no need for hosting sample ones.

If we allow user uploads, it forces people to comply with the max size, etc. It's still polite to provide some for people who are only casually acquainted with graphics software and compressed file formats.
