Is Death and Rebirth same as End of EVA? Cause I thought End of EVA was good, at least until it goes wicked metaphysical and shows real footage of japanese people going to work and whatnot...

Death and Rebirth is pretty much a long trailer for End of Evangelion. The first chunk of Death is sum up of important plot bits of the first 24 episodes with some added footage for more background on things that weren't in the TV series. Rebirth is the 30 minutes of End of Evangelion with some slightly different music in some areas. Then you got End of Evangelion, which is the new episode 25/26 to the show. You can skip Death and Rebirth as long as you seen episodes 1-24, and just watch End of Evangelion.

I think this happened because of the hedgehog'a dilemma: as Ritsuko said, Shinji is able to communicate only by causing pain.

I dunno about that, it could be but I don't think thats the reason. At first I thought it could that Shinji was thinking that Asuke was not real, but another illusion and tried to strangle her, but teh stopped when she caressed his cheek.....AfterallShinji did ask for Asuke in the end?

Hmm, I think that caressing his cheek, Asuka shows him that tere are other ways to communicate... and for the first time, Shinji understands.

In Shinji "dream" , he starts strangling Asuka after having asked her to love him and not to leave him alone.
