[ICON] Closing the Icons

Post by Jaynz »

Since I've been working on my own IP for 'Transforming Robots' (for game purposes), I got a friendly recommendation that I should pull off the 'fanon' material from my site. By and large, that pretty much just means the icons right now...

So, rather than JUST ditch them, I'll post the archives that remain here as they are and let everyone have at it.

That also means that I won't be working on Specific Transformers in the future.. as everything else would be for my site and more 'generic'.

'Intellectual property'

In this case, having both 'fanon' works along with my 'independant' work could create a conflict of interest when I take my own stuff 'private'. I've been wanting to break further away from fanon anyway, so this isn't a huge deal to me... aside from maybe lightening my project load a little. :)

ah intellectual property. cheers.

Is it about potential copyright clashes ? Does that mean you'll be taking down the star trek designs and d20 rules as well ? I'm not all that hot on legal issues.

It's not 'copyright' but 'trademark' infringement. While I could claim that the icons are parody, having them up while working on Spychanger City, in particular, could invite some unwanted trouble down the road - or just be bad karma.

The 'Trek' designs I've got written permission for, by and large, though I'll likely be culling a little bit out of it soon. (There's a ton of redundancy in the artwork, etc...) A lot of the artists and their estates (for those who are no longer with us) have been very generous and giving for the Trek material... so long as it's just the ships and credit is retained.

D20 is an 'OGL' system, meaning that the rights to the trademark are 'open' so long as some key rules are followed. This means that anyone can legally and without-challenge produce d20-branded material. Again, that's work that desperately needs a cleaning pass... but that's not for any legal issues.

Ay. Counterbalancing. Trademarks do make for some cheap advertising though. Useful phase to go through.

swotting up... please stand by... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D20_system

ah, that's where I went wrong. Thinking the d20 trademark was copyright. The Rokugan d20 edition struck me as odd when it was released. Nice idea putting the rules out on OGL.

Once again, well done on all the work you've put in on the icons. It's good to see so many of them being used as avatars... at least, I hope they're yours...

Well, Nick has a lot that he's put up for use as avatar's too (the easiest way to tell is to look at the feet. If they're 'straight', they're likely mine. If they're 'outward' a little, they're likely Nick's)

I also consider my icons 'open source', so people can use them, alter them, etc, any way they want and I won't get too snippy. (Though, if you're hosting a load of them, I would like a link back)

And, of course, there's both the Autobotrix and Mechanix icon cusomizers that I made, which allow you to 'build' your own icon through a web application. Again, I made that for people to use for free... though it's in sore need of an update.

I spent a good couple of hours fiddling with your customizer a while back. Nifty application, although I don't think I ever quite figured out how you made it. Dynamic .gif creation is dead impressive. I didn't even know it could be done.

Thanks for the feet tip. Might save me some future embarrassment ;)

Would you like help with it? I got butt-loads of free time. And where is the autobotrix? I can't find it.

Unfortuantely the update I need to do is for adding Javascript to the update functions (something new to me, actually), so it's probably best that I knock it out myself. :)
