For a long time we (the US) considered taking Canada as an American territory. We were about to do it when someone reminded us of those French people in Quebec.

Thats a load of crock.
The U.S. never tried or even 'considered' a course of action to 'take' Canada, it was an official british colony untill 1867, and the U.S. knew at that point that they were in no condition to challege the British unilaterally. Thats why they tried to invade in 1812 when Britian was busy in Europe with France.
When britian sent over its army, finished in Europe, the Americans realized that this war wouldn't be prosperous for them, so they negoiated a truce.

I know I'm comin off as rather angry, but here in Canada we get very touchy when Americans just think that Canada is just American property with a different flag.....

Maybe they should develop a conventional force first. Their navy's largest combat ships are four destroyers that are decades old, and when they sent troops to Afghanistan they had to use U.S. cargo planes because theirs weren't up to the task.
