Branching Out My Reading Radius - Comics

Post by CounterPunch »

ok rite, i really wanna branch out in terms of the comics i am reading (as its just tf and gijoe) so.... can anyone tell me a good comic (not necessarily the top mainstream stuff) thats just started (or will be soon) has nice art which compliments a good writer, not having a weird story to it (like fantasy elves or something) and doesnt require in depth knowlegde of what came before.

Crossgen is a good place to start, most of their stuff is collected in TPBs so you can catch up for fairly cheap.

Sandman is awesome, probably the best, you don't mind horror with a fantasy slant do you?

Exiles from Marvel is good and is collected in TPB

Daredevil from Marvel Knights is good and in TPB

Masters of the Universe. Those of you over in the States can get your mitts on it far easier than me, although it's just started being reprinted in the UK.

Been a while since I had the chance to savour that 'straight off the shelf' feeling...

As always, I'd recommend the Warren Ellis Stormwatch and Authority trades. His Transmetropolitan is excellent, as well.

Please tell me it's the first series with Jenny Sparks as the team leader, and not the new, terrible one.

All you really need to know is that some of the members of The Authority were part of Stormwatch (a UN-run superhero team) before it was shut down due to lack of funding. The Authority are the most powerful superhero team in the world, and possibly the universe, though this gets tested pretty much every story arc. Otherwise, it seems to have very little to do with the rest of the Wildstorm universe, save for the WildCATS crossover that led to the end of Stormwatch.

Preacher and Hellblazer are recommended.

I think if you want to read the really good comics you're going to have to stray from the "only 10 issues into the series" boundary you've set...
