Movie sequel possibly delayed

Post by Halfshell »

From the Hollywood Reporter, via Empire Online.

http://www.empireonline.com/news/feed.asp?NID=21711

Hardly shocking, given the circumstances, but I thought it worth a note.

I also motion that I be allowed to tag all movie related stuff with [LAF]. Because of clarity and comedy.

[EDIT] Just for anybody who wants a citation for the Bay quote contained within:

edit:

June 2nd announced as shooting date --
http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=co ... &Itemid=99

Film's still "unslotted" in schedule --

Noted.

Pity the strike didn't affect some of the noisome stuff released this Christmas...

Yeah, it's hardly fair. BSG is crippled, yet Alvin and the Chipmunks escapes unscathed. WHERE'S THE JUSTICE?

I am glad AVP:R didn't get put on the back burner. Watched it, loved it, and thought it kicked the first movie's ass by far! I hope TF2 will do the same, maybe this writer strike is a good thing!

I love the robo-racism line "they're some sort of advanced robot. maybe it's japanese". that was a moment i wish the animators would have done an out take of optimus pimp slapping sam. other than that, i thought that was one of the more hideously stupid lines in a movie.

Personally I found that line great. Not because of any "apparent" robo-racism, but becaue it played homage to the the origins of not only the Transformers toys before they were even Transformers, but also of the entire "giant mecha" sub-genre. That whole sub-genre of anime originated in Japan so it was a wonderfully fitting homage to that.

If it is racist (and paying tribute to a country's skill and reputation for high technology is certainly a novel approach to it), the Japanese don't seem that bothered.

Maybe the new film will be full of racism like "Hey, Brazil produces a lot of top quality football players"...

Possibly somewhere there's a version in which Shia ad-libbed "...maybe it's going to BOOM attack us ZOWIE with used schoolgirl panties!" and then ritually disemboweled himself for talking like Warpath, which made him late for a tea ceremony?

Nah, I thought the line was pretty dumb, but not racist...
unless that script is absolutely locked, then the movie can't go ahead, as no changes can be made.
I like the concept of unions and everything, but the idea that they be used to lock people out of creative processes comes across as scummy. Particularly as an average LJ fanfic is often more interesting than Hollywood movies.

And I know that the writer's guild has stirred trouble for films I like, such as Fear And Loathing. It's a situation where "professional skills" are barely distinguishable from stuff a lot of people do as a hobby.

Support them fighting people profiteering off their work, but not much else.

I know, i just use the term "robo-racism" as a funny term with anyone online. I imagine someone on youtube dubbed in "domo arigato mr. roboto" too when that was said. I am glad they acknowledged the roots of robots too in TF, at leats that was one thing Bay-zilla did right.

On the writer strike now, the only thing I don't like is the other night on Letterman, Huckabee, a presidential candidate, came on like is to be expected to lobby his position. Apparently the picketers got mad at him for crossing a picket line! I hate it when people claim "bad politics" or whatever for someone just wanting to lobby a position they are running on. Letterman's show of course isn't too affected, nor other late night shows because the host started out as a writer of some sort anyway. I do feel sympathy for the writers not getting the good graces enough of being mentioned, or being paid correctly for their efforts to try to give Hollywood a script.

I just hope this issue itself gets resolved quickly and with the dues being paid in full.

"What's crackin', Bitches?" didn't strike you as racist? Or the fact that Jazz was the ONLY good guy to die in his Token glory?

No, it didn't. It was simply a modernization of his existing characrization from G1. Jazz' whole character has always been about being "hip" to current pop culture—in G1, that meant he was all into Jazz, R&B, and Rock'n'Roll, in the new movie, it's all Hip-Hop. And in both this movie and th G1 cartoon, he was played by an African American. In G1, he was played by the legendary Scatman Crothers, now by Darius McCrary. Also, his "death" had nothing to do with his Ethnicity. They simply felt that killing him would have more of an emotional impact than if they killed Ironhide, nd they didn't want to kill off Bumblebee or Prime. If it were his ethnicity, they would have killed off Sgt Epps as well.

now that you mention it, the use of the word outside it's intended use (sex/gender of animals) always bugged me. it's another way the english language gets perverted. i thought that line could have been tastefully done, especially if the sentient robots claim to have downloaded earth culture. one would think Jazz, being in g1, a representative of sorts to earth culture would have picked up the bad uses of the language. just my thought on the idiocy of the people responsible for the writing. (no writer's guild raises for them)

On Tramp's comment, i agree, he is a beloved character who tries to be cool at all times, regardless of the danger. It did have a decently emotional impact on the audience. I can only imagine the newcomers to the Transformers series wanted to know more about his character. I feel he, and other decepticons, got much of a chance to really make their character personalities come forth. Too much human interactions, not enough robot interactions lol. For instance, maybe Bonecrusher or Brawl slapping Starscream up the head maybe? And Blackout just looking passively and wondering where his little robot minion went.

That's just it. Jazz' whole character revolves around "fitting in" and "getting it". He picks up pop-culture with ease. The "street culture" has always been his favorite. Thus, it would be perfectly natural for him to pick up youth culture and local "slang". It's just pat of who he is.

It's a sufficiently recurrent meme that characters often make reference to it in other films. Pick twenty horror/thriller movies at random and see how many, of the ones that have one or two black characters, have 'em make it out alive or a character refer to the cliché.

A fair number of the audience are likely to have taken it as a deliberate scriptwriting joke.

Well, that wasn't the case here. Sure, the voice actor was African American, but the character obiously wasn't. The two actual African American characters survived the movie virtually unscathed. According to Robert Orci, Jazz was selected simply for the emotional impact. They had to "kill" one of them, and they wanted the one whom they thought the Audience wuld feel the greatest loss for aside from Prime and Bumblebee. From what Darius McCrary himself said, Jazz may not stay "dead". Then again, he may. We'll have to wait and see.

A lot (most?) of the adult audience regards Jazz as black, and the character received stereotyped dialogue. This has nothing to do with the movie "in-story"; there's one 'black' Autobot and that's the one that bit the dust (in a perfunctory manner that a lot of people have commented felt glossed over.)

Be wary of taking comments from creators (comics, films, etc.) at face value. Greg Land doesn't say a lot about using porn in photo-references, either...
