Direct Connect Ruleset (i.e. we need some)

Post by Lomar4976 »

Anyone whos been connecting to the TFArchive Direct connect hub over the past two weeks or so should recognise my name ([UK-ADSL]Lomar4976) and in these 2 weeks ive found a couple of small points that should be brought up with anyone who connects.

1) Please only have 1 connection going at a time to any person. During quiet times, this isnt such a big deal, but at peak times, ive had people take 2 connections to me for downloading files. Personally, I limit my connections to 3 to conserve bandwidth for people who are downloading (no one likes 2k a second downloads) but that sort of behaviour is just being selfish.

2) If youre gonna download files, try and stay in the hub. Not many people disconnect (at times Ive been disconnected and reconnected while ive been AFK during the day) but there are people who begin a connection, then go off to another hub. This means that hub regulars, who are offering their files for others in the hub cannot get connections to me (or whoever) and also, I wouldnt have a chance to see if there is anything of yours I may like (after all, share and share alike)

3) I know that we have TFArchive inside the hub, but he cant be online at all times - is there any chance we could have the forum mods as operators in the hub in case someone has any complaints about another member (cant say this would happen much, but TFA cant be at his screen 24 hours a day)

4) Whats the policy on porn. I know IaconHub (the other big Transformers DC hub for anyone who doesnt know of it) has a zero tolerance policy, simply because of the nature of files we share (cartoons) could bring children into the hub. Personally I would hate to think that any children are logging onto some peoples file lists and see what ive seen on there from time to time.

Still, a few small observations, but all in all, im sure most people who have used the Direct Connect software would agree that its providing an excellent means to share the episodes and other software.

Hubs have operators? They have mod powers?

Post by Denyer »

That pretty much sums up what I know about DC. Have ye considered volunteering yer services? Seriously, I'm not sure if any of the mods use Direct Connect (and suspect that most would already have any media they wanted via other sources and/or don't have the bandwidth for it.) Whereas, having one or two regulars keeping an eye on the system sounds like a good idea if it's practicable.

On other matters... AFAIC, if parents can't be bothered to monitor what their kids are getting via broadband connection, that's their lookout. Besides, porn was only really interesting when we were all teenagers...

Well, if Brend could figure out how to do it, id gladly police it if he wanted me to do it - If we could get a few people from different time zones who were on regularly we could have someone who was new to DC to have a contact point, and also, anyone breaking the rules could be formally warned (whatever those rules may well be)

Ill leave it up to the powers that be to decide what he wants to do with his hub, after all, he may simply want a 'drop in point' to be created where anyone can hop in for 10 minutes and start a download off.

Well said Lomar4976...

Very valid points that needed to be brought up sooner rather than later!

If I can help out in your just cause, let me know!

Me have mucho experienco with directo connecto. In response to your questions, I do not run the hub but you have good questions nonetheless. My opinions: Minimum: 2 slots open, min share: whatever is decided upon, something small preferably like 1 gb - 5. Pron....no big deal, I think it should be allowed, people are coming there to get transformers episodes, not porn, so it really doesnt matter, they want pron, go somewhere else. I also agree with the OP thing, the hub may not be huge yet but it will get bigger, I could fill an OP position in the central time zone if needed. :)

Denyer, I use it, but I'm not a mod anymore.

I'll gladly help out, I'v been using the hub since brendan started it, so I could cover the times the US'ers are sleeping.

Yes, users from the IaconHub are heading over to the tfarchive one, filling it with kiddy porn and such, something must be done about it.

Personally, I think people should make their own decision on whether or not to add to the community or only leech from it. In addition, sharing stuff when you are on a 56k is not good deal. Those people shouldn't be forced to share a bunch of stuff no will ever download. Also, I think porn belongs in a porn hub, not a transformers hub.

That's one of the main reasons we have the rule in IaconHub.

Hi this probably my 2nd post on this board. Wouldn't it be a good idea to have a seperate Forum for TFArchive's hub on this message board? Then it would be easier for DC users to track developments? Just a thought. Also TFArchive would it be a good idea to advertise your board in the startup screen of DC so that if anyone has any queries or wants to gather opinions they can post it on the board.

Lomar4976 good idea about having more ops and in different time zones. We already got an op from Europe and if you are willing to offer then I suppose we got enough from Europe. I'm also from Europe (UK) and would volunteer if there is any help needed.

Lemming are you saying that 56Kers should not have to share a minimum amount of stuff? I would agree with you seeing as I am a 56Ker myself but you must remember that some people are deceitful and would then set their status to 56K so as to not let anyone download from them. Its a good idea Lemming which I would like to see happen but would probably not work due to the nature of some people. Anyway I'l be going to uni next year and hopefully that will mean connections faster than dial-up :) Maybe it could work if it was an unwritten rule. Maybe,I don't know.

On the porn issue, yes a lot are from the other Hub, who have been kicked off. I think porn should be outlawed on this type of Hub (i.e. a hub for Transformers which is a children's television show) as not only can it be illegal for minors to view porn but also yet again you can get some sick wierdos who overstep the boundary and having files which are of paedophillic nature, which is illegal to possess and share, which would mean TFArchive and it's HUB would be liable. Well IMHO.

Well anyway nice to see you all and have a fun time on DC and its main chat :D

...according to the legal test cases on newsgroups and various other file-sharing services, it wouldn't. I do try to keep up with the news on this. Provided there's a disclaimer along the lines of that which free webspace providers use, and any illegal material is removed within a reasonable time-frame, no worries...

although a case could be made that all of the TF episodes shared could be considered illegal, even though they were aired on free tv. DVDRips are different though. IaconHub has a ban on rips of the new Rhino G1 box set right now because that's a mess I don't wanna get into right now. And Rhino's been pretty good to the TF community to rip them off like that. :)

...taping anything off TV or radio is illegal.

I don't think anyone should be trading anything other than home tapings (as a trial to see if it's worth buying the DVDs), but that's my personal opinion. It reflects only my peculiar brand of morality.

Yeah - ive gotta put my point in on this as well (even though we had the 'copyright' discussion a few weeks ago)

The only stuff that should be shared actively on filesharing applications such as these are episodes that were freely available to the public at no cost (other than the TV licence fee, or whatever the american equivalent is)

Whilst I would personally love to download some DVD quality episodes, since the UK dvd set isnt available yet, It must also be understood that if they dont sell in America, theres little chance we will get them in the UK.

Im willing to wait and watch the TV episode downloads until the DVDs are released in the UK to buy.

Not in the US

We have:Supreme Court decision in Sony v. Universal Studios 464 U.S. 417 (1984), a.k.a. "the Betamax case"

which includes the paraphraph:

[p.456] In summary, the record and findings of the District Court lead us to two conclusions. First, Sony
demonstrated a significant likelihood that substantial numbers of copyright holders who license their
works for broadcast on free television would not object to having their broadcasts time- shifted by private
viewers. And second, respondents failed to demonstrate that time-shifting would cause any likelihood of
nonminimal harm to the potential market for, or the value of, their copyrighted works. The Betamax is,
therefore, capable of substantial noninfringing uses. Sony's sale of such equipment to the general public
does not constitute contributory infringement of respondents' copyrights.

and there is the Home Recording Act of 1992.

:-)

I was about to mention this too. I've heard that in the UK you have to pay a license with every TV set. In the US you don't. You get a TV and you can watch anything through the air for free, but you gotta pay for cable and satellite.

Its good that you offer to help, but if you have 56k I dont think your going to be on very long as youd tie up your phone lines, so if you were an op, you wouldnt be getting out your full potential, only among certain small spans of time, but thats up to you:).

If that central slot is still free Ill glady take it.:)

Yeah in the UK we have to pay a TV liscence to watch TV, I think its set per number of people in household not by number of TVs. It is because we have the BBC who do not run adverts on their channels. Only adverts for their own shows betweeen when the show ends and the next show starts. We have two channels of advert free programmes. The other 3 channels have advert vreaks in their shows but not as many as you lot in the US, e.g. a show desginated to fill a 30min time slot would only have 1 advert break in the middle, unlke in the US, advert after the opening credits, 2 adverts in between and an advert before the end credits, or something like that.
Its good that you offer to help, but if you have 56k I dont think your going to be on very long as youd tie up your phone lines, so if you were an op, you wouldnt be getting out your full potential, only among certain small spans of time, but thats up to you.

You'd be pretty surpise how long I can stay on with a 56K modem but next year I'm going to university which means faster connections :)
