Play.com listings for reprints of Dreamwave's G1 series
Play.com listings for reprints of Dreamwave's G1 series
Thanks to reporting at Seibs for these:
Volume One

Volume Two

I would seriously recommend that if anyone hasn't looked at DW yet, they borrow a copy to read before buying. Or just wait for IDW's own take on Transformers in January, and get the preview issue of original material they released a few weeks ago. What you're getting in these two DW trade paperbacks is a first volume that the author of the second wrote off almost immediately, and a second volume that barely has an end (the decision was taken during production to it run it into an ongoing volume three. Which then dropped the plot and went on tangents.)
If you read Volume 2 #6 you'll have a decent idea of everything DW had solidified in print up until that point, and if you track down MTMTE #8, you'll have a fair chunk of what were their upcoming ideas. Yes, I am biased. I've read them.

I can't emphasise enough that IDW Publishing are not directly connected to Dreamwave. They just have reprint rights to TF material in general.

So have I. And so, to give this thread some balance, I will say that Vol. 1 is worth the read, and Vol. 2 is one of the most kickass TF stories around.
For every Stu, there is a Shockwav, eh?;)
Indeed. I do think it's worth people trying to read a bit of any series before buying into it, though.
If IDW decide to take some of the Dreamwave stories forward once their own books are in full swing and all the legal issues are sorted, I'll be interested to see what they do with it. Until then it feels a bit like reading Stormwatch: Team Achilles in the knowledge it has no published end.
And I really hate that "new edition of the long out-of-print classic" tagline in the Play listings; it suggests the titles are older than they are, and is likely to confuse casual buyers and friends/relatives buying for others. The first volume came out in 2002, and the existing trade paperback stayed in print for a while.

Well, you've got reviews by Cliffy, Bombshell, me, and others on this site. If you hunt around on a.t.t. there are some fairly in-depth reviews by ZacWilliam... he liked them more...

Volume 2 has little referencing to the first volume, and you could pretty much read them both as stand alone stories.
Which is a mistake on the part of James and Adam, I think. Still, as a product on its own, Vol. 2 was awesome stuff IMO. Granted, it was fanwank stuff, but somehow it delivered an epic feel to it. What impresses me most is that despite its incredibly enormous cast, there is quite ample individual characterization. In other words, it wasn't "stick this guy here and this guy there just to include them" kind of stuff ala Budiansky's late Marvel run.
As far as what I didn't like, I think too much was crammed into the last issue, without an adequately conclusive ending. And Pat Lee's balloony artwork was annoying at times.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I was reading Cliffjumpers reviews of the DW G1 and on-going series last night and I am certainly in the mood for these now.
I'd say its a bit of a bargain compared to the £2+ whatever an individual issue cost at the time, and as long as its all full colour i'll be happy. Perhaps it will then encourage them to publish the War Within series too. I see this as something like the Collected Comics series of the 80's, maybe a few quid more, but I'm a grown up now.

I know the item description thingey has to sell the product big time, but these take a few liberties... "Long out of print"? At most a couple of years counts as a long time? Not to mention the Forbiden Planet in Derby had bugger loads of copies last time I was in there... And "Superstar artist" to describre Porsche Lee?

I agree with you that I hardly consider DW "long out print" but I guess it's just matter someone's point-of-view.
To some people I guess 2 years quailifies as "long out of print".
But to me the term "Long out print" to me means books like Miracle/Marvelman or Atlantis Chroncles that haven't trade paper back (Miracle/Marvelman needs some new tpbs and in the case of AC; DC still hasn't relesead a tpb of it) and/or that they haven't any new material (i.e. new mini/maxi/ongoing series) between
5-10 years. But that's just me though.

They're out there for anyone who looks, but should be taken as the opportunity to get a taster of material—one, people will not hand illicit things out on a plate, and two, ask again how you can bilk people (IDW) I like and who are doing good things for this community out of money and you will not be coming back here.Originally posted by Thefallenone

Under no circumstances will I recommend something against honest opinion, but don't confuse that with endorsement of freeloading.
