Japanese GI Joe

Post by DrSpengler »

I've been getting interested in Japanese GI Joe lately, for some reason.

I was searching ebay and I found out that Takara released the original GI Joe vs Cobra toys in Japan back in the 80's (with some really sweet packaging).

Anybody know any more info about GI Joe in Japan (aside from the original line inspiring Microman, which inspired Microchange, which was a part of the original Transformer line)?

Maybe a website with some pics?

One weird thing I noticed just from looking at the boxes, Duke is called "Grant" in Japan for some reason.

Nah, it's called G.I. Joe with the red, white and blue and everything.

Actually, it says "Chijyou saikyou no ekisupaato chiimu: G.I. jyoo", or "Earth's Strongest Expert Team: G.I. Joe!"

Originally, G.I. Joe was called "Combat Joe" in Japan, from what I read... Might be one of those internet legends, though.
Looking for a complete Energon Sky Shadow (from Superion Maximus).
Offering: Binaltech Hound, Swindle, Ravage (Corvette), Skids.
Can buy in stores: Robot Heroes Tigatron/Inferno, Ricochet/Predaking.

Cool.

I checked the names on the back of one of the cards, they're all the same save for Duke being called Grant.

And one other I can't figure out...

GI Joe figure number G-07 is named "Mick". Who the heck is that?

I found the toy but I can't identify it. He's in the top right side, between Gung-Ho and Snowjob. Anyone tell me who he is?

He resembles Rock 'N Roll from the cartoon.

The color of the in your picture seems to differ a little from the picture I found of Rock 'N Roll's figure. http://www.yojoe.com/action/82/82card/rocknroll.jpg

Oh yeah, that's Rock n Roll. Thanks!

So in Japan

Duke = Grant
Rock n Roll = Mick

Cool.

Iw as thinking maybe it was "Mic" as in short for "microphone", but Ir eally don't know. They changed "Duke" to "Grant" when his real name is Conrad Hauser, so there's no telling what's what.
