W3rd. Kids at that young age have nothin' much to spend on. They don't pay for rent, car, bills, etc. They have more disposable income than any other age group by far. They're classified as Generation Y who have impulsive wants. So the music industry markets their products to children. It's where the profit is. Plus kids will do anything to "fit in" and go with what's hot right now.

Individualism doesn't exist in the world of North American pre/early-teens. They don't have an identity of their own, so they just go along with what everyone else is going with. MTV and the Radio decides what's good music. Right now it's studio-mastered vocals and choreographed dance routines.
It's the same reason why movies like 'She's All That' and TV shows like 'Friends' are popular, even though they are complete ****.

It's because 13 year old kids are idiots. There should be an age limit on albums... Anyone above the age of 13 buying a Steps, or Pop Idol winner single or album should be shot for the good of the human race. Except for some unexplicable reason, I kinda like Colourblind by Darius - not that I'd ever be stupid enough to buy his singles or albums. By the way Cliffy, his surname is 'Danesh', but I'm not sure if he uses it in his publicity lark.

I found God. Then I lost him. He'll probably turn up down the back of the sofa someday.

I actually took a non-obvious tack to the essay and spent the whole thing alternately mocking self-styled serious musicians and thier fans, and the NME... it occured to me that everyone doing the question was going to take the same old "kids like crap" angle, and thought a closer examination was needed... For one, the likes of boybands etc. do work harder in terms of PR etc. and seem more appreciative of their fans, rather than making out that celebrity is some sort of drag, and teen magazines are nowhere near as hypocritically hilarious as 'serious' music mags...
