Why are the charts full of music aimed at 13-year olds?

Perhaps because with a little help from their parents' money they buy the most records. And they're old enough to have friends who tell them what music is cool and a bit too young to know where to get them for free.

W3rd. Kids at that young age have nothin' much to spend on. They don't pay for rent, car, bills, etc. They have more disposable income than any other age group by far. They're classified as Generation Y who have impulsive wants. So the music industry markets their products to children. It's where the profit is. Plus kids will do anything to "fit in" and go with what's hot right now.

Because 13-year-olds are the most easily influenced group of consumers, with the least taste and proportionally, the most disposable income (100%). As long as it looks good and is reported to be "cool," you can count on 13-year-olds being the first in line to buy it....

What's Darius off Popstars' surname? Or does he record as just Darius?

Individualism doesn't exist in the world of North American pre/early-teens. They don't have an identity of their own, so they just go along with what everyone else is going with. MTV and the Radio decides what's good music. Right now it's studio-mastered vocals and choreographed dance routines.

It's the same reason why movies like 'She's All That' and TV shows like 'Friends' are popular, even though they are complete ****.

... that's why those same artists sell big and those shows are watched massively in other non-north-american countries too ...

Yeah, I agree with much of what has been said, particularly bignaki, which made me laugh a little.

But.

Maybe it also has something to do with the type of groupies that people like Gary Glitter and Jonathon King prefer?

It's because 13 year old kids are idiots. There should be an age limit on albums... Anyone above the age of 13 buying a Steps, or Pop Idol winner single or album should be shot for the good of the human race. Except for some unexplicable reason, I kinda like Colourblind by Darius - not that I'd ever be stupid enough to buy his singles or albums. By the way Cliffy, his surname is 'Danesh', but I'm not sure if he uses it in his publicity lark.

Kids are really susceptible to advertising... you tell them it's cool, they'll believe it. Other kids tell them it's cool, they'll definitely believe it.

Advertising agencies make it their job to own your kids. Hide the TV and Radio...
[edit]: Oh, wait, that IS their job, isn't it? Silly me...

There's gonna be some fun when a certain couple of 13-year-olds see this.

I actually took a non-obvious tack to the essay and spent the whole thing alternately mocking self-styled serious musicians and thier fans, and the NME... it occured to me that everyone doing the question was going to take the same old "kids like crap" angle, and thought a closer examination was needed... For one, the likes of boybands etc. do work harder in terms of PR etc. and seem more appreciative of their fans, rather than making out that celebrity is some sort of drag, and teen magazines are nowhere near as hypocritically hilarious as 'serious' music mags...
