Advice on comic series sought
Hi,
I've currently got a lot of spare time on my hands while recovering from illness so I've been getting as many comics to read as I can. I've been borrowing and downloading and I'd like to know what series people would recommend to someone who's been following IDW's TFs for the last few years but nothing else. What's out there that's any good?
I'll list below some of the series I've been reading:
IDW's and Marvel's TFs
Planetary
The Authority
Marvel's House of M saga and Civil War
Fables
Astonishing X-Men
Sandman
Watchmen
So what series would you recommend. I've heard some people recommend Transmetropolitan and the Mouseguard and so I'm gonna try and get those. What Batman and Superman stories would people recommend as there are so damn many? Anything else?
Anyone care to help?

Transmet is definitely worth the read.
The best Batman series I've read is Gotham Central. He isn't in it much, it's more a series about how Gotham functions for the rest of the poor sods who live and work there (police, etc.)
You might like Invincible; it riffs on cape books, but without huge backstory or taking itself too seriously most of the time.
Hitman (warning: gets grim towards the end of the run.)

Aquaman (the Peter David run, which is the 3rd series, I think)
Actually before reading that read Atlantis Chronicles, then Aquaman: Time & Tide
The latest Green Arrow series (which really hadn't had a bad issue.)
There's an old Superman Annual with an Alan Moore story called "For the Man Who Has Everything". It's awesome.
Justice League/Justice League International/Justice League America (Up to issue 50 or so. Kieth Giffen and J.M. DeMattius' run, it's classic, probably the best Justice League comic series of all time. Justice League Europe too)
Batman Year One
Preacher
Miracleman (If you read only one other comic series, let it be this one)
Y: the Last Man
Exiles
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Promethea
Top 10
I should probably stop there. Seriously, I could keep you reading for a couple years...

For the first question, please see the fine gentleman below in my sig. Anything involving him would be quite adequate.
Besides him, The Ultimates as previously suggested. Volumes 1 and 2. Green Lantern: The Sinestro Corps (heard really good things about this one, but haven't actually read it, although I plan to).
Re: Bats and Supes, I actually went back this week to reread the infamous "deaths of" trades. IMO, I find the entire Knightfall series more satisfying than the Death of Supes, but I also like all the post-death stories involving Doomsday.

If you want old school then pick up Alan Moore's "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow" arc. It was the grand send-off to the Pre Crisis Superman series and is both campy and dark all at the same time.
You can get both of these in a trade called DC Universe: The Stories of Alan Moore which basically collects all the one off stuff he wrote for the company and the rather good Killing Joke. If you like that it's worth getting Alan Moore's Future Shocks which basically does the same for his 2000AD work and has a cute injoke where a character in one story mentions having read one of the issues in the DC book.originally posted by Hound

As for batman stuff, I've allways liked the whole Cataclysm/No Mans Land arc. It's spread over about six books but well worth it. The one thing I didn't like at the time- the idea that America would be so useless in the aftermath of such a disaster hitting a major city now sadly seems the most probable part after New Orleans...

How fair is it to recommend comics which you can't get anywhere?
Sure, I'd love some Miracleman myself, if it's really as good as everyone says, but it's not gonna happen.
If it's so good why can't you get it anywhere? Is it not available in trades? If not, why the hell not? Anyone know?
