Material Stealing?

Post by Tempest »

http://www.topsitelists.com/bestsites/s ... sites.html

I found this on the net. I dunno if it's one of Brendan's sites he hosts but I thought I'd check just to be sure. It has the TFA's background plus one of our images.

This may be something completely stupid I'd double check just to be sure.

*clicks link and blinks at background*

Hmm. Looks like you could be right, though seeing as so many places seem to use the same purply-gridded background I don't tend to notice that much anymore...

And which other image is it that they've taken from here?

The background doesn't bother me, its it's source that does.

Also the TFA button or such is at the very bottom. Also it has the same hit counter as us ...

*takes another look*

Seems like there should indeed be some sort of image at the bottom, though for some reason I get the Red X of Doom. However, by right-clicking and selecting Properties, you can see that the URL is listed as "http://www.tfarchive.org/banner/tca.gif".

The background is not "taken" from TFA... it's HOTLINKED. If your browser offers you the "view single image" option, do that with the background. And then take a look at the URL.

Hot-linked meaning "taking up the Archive's bandwidth", right? Or something like that anyway...

Well, Cybertron Archive are the ones with the imagination for the url tfarchive.net.

Could we not change the image to a big graphic saying "Bastard Thieves"?

Right, so what's to be done about this asshattery? Assuming permission to hotlink hasn't been given.

[edit: scratch that, it's just the manual I'm working from...]

TFArchive.org (asides from backpedalling at some point in the past to call their site 'The Cybertron Archive') also ripped a bunch of image galleries from various sites a couple of years back. TFArchive.net seems to have lapsed, though.

A generic .htaccess block isn't the solution, as lots of site hotlink banners and buttons from here.

Did you move this, or copy it? I've just replied to one of 'em, anyway...

Short version: I can't do anything nastily creative without mod_rewrite.

I doubt the guy behind tfarchive.org has permission.

Er, just copied it. Meant to add a "Copied from: ..." to the title.

Weren't they the reason one of the older boards had a tfarchive2.something URL as well?

Sort of... tfarchive.net was taken, and I think B wanted another URL with 'tfarchive' in it to ease the transition between servers. Hence 'tfarchive2'.

Still, cocksuckers.

Their webguy being named Skywarp is well-spooky too,

Dug out some old code. Only blocks, rather than offering seizure-inducing animated GIF goodness, but it'll do... no need to bother B.

SetEnvIfNoCase Referer "^(.*)topsitelists\.com" BadReferrer
order deny,allow
deny from env=BadReferrer

I still prefer the idea of renameing the file for the archive so it accesses say redbox2.jpg and then altering redbox.jpg to say "I am a thieving C U N T!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I'm not willing to put money on it being only in the header includes, nor B or friends not having inlined images elsewhere; this isn't the only site on the server.

what about a .htaccess file redirecting all requests from the thief server to that file?

edit

here is the .htacces code to put in the file

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)?tfarchive.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteRule \.(gif|jpg)$ http://www.tfarchive.com/nasty.gif [R,L]

Just create a file "nasty.gif" and place this particular .htaccess file in the common sub durectory

That's interesting... the reference I've got omits closing ] brackets (as you'd omit closing " for direct HTML output rewriting of 404s, etc)... I think the reference is incorrect... so mod_rewrite is working fine.

Erm, which bit of "if we block all other referrers, we block the many other sites linking our banners and buttons" wasn't clear?

Code to use would be:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(www\.)?topsitelists\.com/ [NC]
RewriteRule \.(jpe?g|gif|bmp|png)$ bandwidth.gif [L]

I'm going to merge this back into the original thread... getting messy...

edit: Or how about we be extra-friendly?

RewriteRule \.(jpe?g|gif|bmp|png)$ http://www.tfarchive.org/prod/images/zo ... /arcee.jpg [L]

edit2:

Yep, that actually works. Moral highground time, though. Simple block is back.
