I thought folks were supposed to be getting design updates. What's up with Soundwave still as a tape deck?

I was really diggin' the other updated designs (except Megatron's Crazy-Eights chest thing). I've been a little disappoitned with these one shots for Shockwave and Nightbeat (although Nightbeat's storry was really good). I did like the Dinobots though...nice tie in with Beast Wars.

My guess: Soundwave's been active on Earth since the 80s.

The character's more iconic than Megatron -- face of the Decepticon faction symbol, focus of more backlash surrounding the movie than even the new Megatron design, etc. I'd call this pretty sensible.

The possible downside is I don't think Nick'll be doing the interior art...

That's beautiful. Most of my exposure to Roche's art is through his covers, and they seem to be getting better and better. A good mix of detail and expressiveness, and reminiscent of Geoff Senior's work, especially the "Galvatron stomps through flaming forest" scenes in the UK comics Wanted: Galvatron run.

That's what I'd assume as well. Here's hoping the cassetts will be allowed personalities rather than just going "RAAAAGGGHHHH" every so often.

Soundwave != Tape_Deck

Soundwave == Dictation_Machine - something you still see in Office Max and Office Depot stores nationwide.

That's why the casettes are labelled MICRO Casttetes.

Oy, people!

Japanese personal cassette recorder that came with headphones. They were sold for music as well as other uses, and for audio higher fidelity metal tape was used.

This was brought up in the very early stages of first producing Transformers titles. In the end it was Hasbro's call.
Peace...

While Nick isn't doing the interior art on this round (he's busy with something coming down the pipeline a little later), I don't think the art is going to disappoint. The pencils for the cover just came across my desk this morning and they look great.

Don't get yer panties in a bunch. You're arguing semantics. Dictation Machine or no, it's still what I'd consider a tape deck...micro or not, they're still tapes.

Now, if I'd said "stereo" then you'd have a point.

I'm sure it'll be fun. Just enjoying NR's stuff lots at the moment.
In the end it was Hasbro's call.
Slightly surprised -- what with them having done Soundwaves as a jet recently, car, etc. -- but it's one of those situations where an alt-mode fits a character particularly well, and so many people seem to have had the cassettes as kids there's a groundswell of interest.

While that's true of the toy, it's not true of his portrayal in, well, most TF fiction I can think of off-hand (IIRC, the cassettes weren't labelled in the comic or cartoon either)... it's a bit like Metroplex - he's the core of Autobot city in the (official) fiction, but no more than a transforming jumped-up Micromaster base in toy form.

Titanium Soundawave must have been at least planned at that stage. Maybe also Soundwave reissue? Of course, by that logic Soundwave Spotlight should have been in the first patch of oneshots. :o

I'm hopeing that future Spolights will also focus on characters who have allready been introduced but haven't really done anything yet. Wheeljack springs to mind.

Mmm. Although Soundwave fits that bill, as he was in Stormbringer.
