Genetically it's a bad idea to reproduce (as it is for anyone with an existing genetic issue on a dominant allele to decide that their "right" to have kids outweighs the health of those offspring, if major.) Morally? Don't see the problem -- it's just a cultural ick factor going back to childhood, of the same type as "it's rude to touch each other there."

Take an unknowing example -- boy meets girl, they fall in love and marry, all that traditional schtick. Years later they discover, oh noes teh horror, they're first cousins (or some other near relation that prevents marriage in many countries.) Is that justification for breaking up a relationship, taking away any kids they've had, and jailing one or other?

Personally, it goes against my beliefs, but so do a lot of things. If people want to live like that, though, I say, let them. Doesn't hurt anyone, as long as they don't have any children.

Does it hurt anyone? Well...if it is between two consenting adults, no, I suppose not, though there is the chance that it may devastate other family members – but, then again, the same could be said towards other arrangements....so I’m not even going to attempt to go there. However, as stated earlier, there is the potential threat of passing on recessive genes, with heterosexual incest at least, therefore harmful to the children born under these circumstances.

Would actually be more worried about parents having four kids, unless they're from previous relationships...

Saw this story posted on the Fark a while back. Yeah, all four are their kids. Apparently, the state has already taken three of the children away, and two out of the four have some level of retardation.

I share others views in this thread in that I don't have a problem with close-blood relationships from a moral standpoint. It goes against my religion but as far as I'm concerned, my religion can go **** off on this point.

I agree with Denyer though that it's potentially harmful to the kids after doing some research into why that is:

Didn't seem to bother European royal families all that much. for example.

Seriously though, i do have a couple of cents on this. Mostly about love being an unstoppable emotion. Regardless of however much you might fight it. It defies logic. That said, there can be a case to argue about sibling incest and the possible genetic and sociological patterns that first brought the parents together might be present in their children. I'm a bit shaky on hereditary sexuality but it sounds plausable to me.

Perhaps in certain cases it can be more about confusion between familial love and sexual attraction proper but that's pedantry for you.

I'm more in the 'love conquers all' bastion, so that takes precedence over the inherent problems of inbreeding... anyway, I'm off to pick flowers and walk barefoot in the forest of life. I'll see you all on the other side of the rainbow :p

erm well its good that they love each other.although for the kids it'd be quite strange. I dont frankly care so much that they are brother and sister. i say leave them because its not doing any harm to people.

Personally, it's pretty weird.

I don't think there is any reasoning that could make it sound, well, normal. The whole recessive genes thing, too.

I mean, look at the south. so i've proved a point that it should be banned. but at the cost of west virginia becoming un-inhabited? I don't think so!

most of my material used here was in jest

Now, I don't really care about incest at all, apart from my ongoing bugbear with incest porn (I MEAN DO THEY HOLD ID UP TO THE ****ING CAMERA OR SOMETHING??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!). No, I'm here for a much worse duty. As a respected pillar of this here boardthing, and the closest thing we have to a level-headed, well-mannered poster, it's my sad duty to ship Jets to the webpolice. Not because he's abused that keyboard far too many times, Oh No. Not because he's a Gooner. Oh No. Not because he's obsessed with incest. Oh No. Not because of all those racist dances he holds in his secret underground missile fortress. Oh No.

Because he can't keep a simple promise, that's why.

I didn't promise mate. I DIDN'T PROMISE!

And 2004 was probably one of the worst years of my life since childhood :(

I tend to discount much of it. I actually had it wiped from my memory.

Life got better mid-2005 onwards. Much better :)

I should add that in the last few months we have found a rather incesterous family line's off the 2 estates that surround our school.
We think there appears to be several generations of not quite brother and sister nbreeding but so many interliked relationships that genetically they are very similar. 3 or 4 generations of chavs have never bread out of the area and given that hardly any stay married for long and many kids have unidentified fathers (but familar facial features) and fathers/mothers who have a dozen or more children by different fathers. Factor in the clearly many mothers who sleep around freely (A lot of partners just don't seem to care) with the others off the estate there seems to be very limited genetic material floating around.

These fathers also produce children by more off the estates there appears to be several far too close bloodlines mixing up. Given the consistency of the learning disabilities among the 20 or so "demon families" and what the old timers (some teachers have been at the school for 30 years) remember about their parents it makes some disturbing matches.
