Yeah.

It's interesting, having heard the stories mainly from the point of view of TSR sources in references contributed to gaming magazines over the years, to get the other side in the interview linked from that wiki page.

I think he'd have appreciated the veritable torrent of games-rule jokes that're now flying around...

Not really, but he did co-create something that formed the basis for a large chunk of popular geek culture / several novel lines I've enjoyed / several novels he himself wrote that weren't bad / directly or indirectly inspired (without exaggeration) millions of other creative types.

And he seems to have been a pleasant type, without pulling punches when fighting his corner.

dude even though I didnt even know who that guy is and I have never played dnd, after reaing his wiki to find out who he is, how can you not realise the immense impact this dude had on geek culture.

even in videogames alone dnd is pretty much the basis for every RPG made in america and even the first FF was more like it than the later incarnations.

while the dnd mythos is the natural progression from the tolkien world there are alot of concepts that came out of it that have impacted the fantasy genre more than any other medium.

I spent many years of my high school life playing AD&D. Even as an adult I was a DM for my younger step brothers and their friends for a few years. It is sad that he has passed on as he was always a very outspoken and opinionated man. His "soapbox" articles in Dragon magazine were always a pleasure to read back in the day. I think its really too bad that most people have no clue who he is, despite the fact that almost all of popular gaming culture would owe their existence to him.

I never got to play much D&D as a kid. My friends really weren't into it. I could get them to play once or twice, but they often lost interest quickly. I still trawl through my monstrous manual when I want to read about a monster.

I’m not a fan of role-playing games, or any kind of board game.
