What I find cool is that you've got semi-modern stylings on the action closest to 'camera', whilst the jet looks like something out of an original picture-book or Find-Your-Fate novel...
The fetishistically bright and PhotoShop gradiented stuff Dreamwave were fond of often felt like they were illustrating a webcomic.
As you say, it'll live or die on story.

Fetishistically?...................
Anyway, yeah, I agree, as is always the case, the TF comic will live or die by its story, not by its art.
Which is why, despite the sense of optimism I get from that pic, I have to say my jury is still out until I know what's in store for the story. Personally, I liked DW's stories (Micromasters aside), and would hope they could continue where they left off on the ongoing and Dark Ages. But, seeing as that is likely not going to happen, let's pray we get some good writing talent on board, whatever publisher gets the license.
I really, REALLY think an anthology book should happen. Different art, different talent, fresh takes on our favorite bots, I think most fans want to see this. If you don't like one style or writer, perhaps you will like another. That is one of the prime benefits of an anthology series.
If you look at that list of debtors and creditors regarding DW, I think its quite possible that the thing holding the comic up most is the cost that Hasbro is charging for the license. As we full well know now, a smaller publisher, though willing, will not be able to make such an investment and keep its head above water. No doubt the likes of Josh Blaylock, head of Devil's Due, are mulling over that licensure cost vs. the huge potential a successful blockbuster movie will have on his comic sales. For a smaller publisher, its not straightforward, and I would venture that this, more than anything, is holding things up.
