Jets. And probably quite a few other people as well, somewhere in the world.. safe bet seeing as how there's well over 3 billion...
"What're those for again? Movies? Eh... there's awards for everything now..."Thoughts?

That's because the Oscars haven't happened yet. Those are just the nominations.
Of the movies nominated for the big awards, I've only seen Little Miss Sunshine and The Devil Wears Prada (on the same night, oddly enough) and I didn't really think of either of them as Academy Award material.
Hang on to your ego.

I'm backing Peter O'Toole for best actor. Whitaker can allways win another year, but Pete's geting on now and deserves more than the "Bugger Us, We HAven't Given Him An Oscar yet" honoury one he got a few years ago.

The problem is that the proliferation of awards shows, coupled with the fact that the Oscars are dead last in the whole "season" (and I shudder even while using that term), have made the Oscars largely irrelevant outside the industry. Sure, there will always be enough people who will tune in, but more because of the American culture's general fascination with celebrities than an innate desire to celebrate quality filmmaking.
I don't think the Oscars can be irrevelant. They are watched live by a billion people. No other film awards show probably gets 20 million world wide. The mostly the media who are obsessed by the awards season and they make the grand mistake that everybody else is interested, and therfore fed up by the end, too.
There is also a reason nobody would dare out an awards show after the Oscars because it's redundent.

It's true that the show garners a tremendous audience, but it's important to step back and consider what many of them are actually tuning in to see. Are they really that interested in the results themselves? They coudl find those out on the internet the following morning, as I do. At this point, large audiences for the Oscars are more an indication that we just want to see beautiful people and the drama of people winning and losing. The awards themselves are becoming less important because so many others are given out beforehand.
