Transformers UK Comic Faq: Ruff Draft!

Post by Cliffjumper »

This is what happens if Cliffy has had too much nicotine/caffeine… He sits up all night and actually does something for his website. This is a rough draft, and I need you guys to help me with it… I need a hand from the comic experts, from the guys who’ve just read the run and have questions, from guys who’ve read a few of them and want to know stuff, and from people who’ve never ever read a TF comic. This version hasn’t actually been researched yet as I can be a bit lazy, so some stuff will be resolved from me just going thru the comics, but these at least are questions I could do with answering:

- Can anyone give me a few more countries where the UK stories were printed?
- Any behind the scenes things people can point out which’ll add to this lot?
- Where any other back-ups used aside from Iron Man, Machine Man, Visionaries and G. I. Joe? I have vague memories of Hercules, but nothing solid…
- Am I being too subjective in some places, especially when it comes to canonicity?
- Any other definite “Movie” events?
- Can anyone shed more light on this booklet which featured info on Impactor, Rack ‘n’ Ruin, Xaaron etc.? Was it Jetfire who owned a copy?
- Is Prowl Pants posting actively at Transfans so I can bug for use of a pic of his R ‘n’ R Kitbash?
- I could do with a bit more on Transformers appearing in other comics… I can’t get into the correct areas of Zob’s site at the moment…
- I also could REALLY do with any info on Collected Comics – which issues it reprinted, how long it ran for etc., and a lot more on the Specials…
- I’ve got a nagging feeling I’ve missed some ‘biggies’, so fire away… Before it’s said, I do plan to add a “Who drew the UK comic?” one, and the mentioned Book of the Dead…

UK COMIC FAQ – ROUGH DRAFT

How long did the British Transformers comic run for?

The Transformers, published by Marvel UK, ran for 332 issues, the first dated 20/09/1984 and the last dated 18/01/1992. The Generation 2 title, published by Grandreams, ran from October 1994 to January 1995.

What's the difference between the UK and US run?

Basically, the UK comic was weekly rather than monthly, so even after the US strips had been split in half, the Marvel UK staff needed to make two weeks' worth of material in-house. After reprinting the four-issue US limited series in TF #1-8, Marvel UK then ran homemade strips in the gaps between the US reprints. Issues 1-26 only featured about 5 or 6 pages of colour Transformers' strip, the rest being black & white. From Issue 27 onwards the comic was all-colour. To fill the other 11 pages of strip needed for the comic, a back-up title was ran, with "Machine Man" and "Iron Man" among the supporting titles. From Issue 213 the format changed again, with the new distribution being a colour reprint of around a third of an American book, mixed with a short black & white UK-made strip, and a reprint from another line, which started off as "Visionaries" and later became "G. I. Joe". By Issue 309 the format reverted to reprinting half of a US story, and a back-up strip. On occasion, the back-up strip was a reprint of an existing Transformers strip.

Were any of the UK stories available in the US?

The first homemade UK strip, "Man of Iron", was reprinted as a stopgap measure in US #35 & #36. It was recoloured from scratch by Nel Yomtov. Aside from this, no UK stories were ever made available in the US, though they did feature in other European countries' runs, such as Holland and Sweden.

Who wrote the UK run?

Mainly former "Scream" writer Simon Furman. He wrote the second indigenous UK story, "The Enemy Within", and then wrote every UK exclusive story for the rest of the title. From US #56 [reprinted in UK #240-242] Furman switched over to writing for the Us book also, which meant he had less time to devote to UK strips, which slowly faded, the last UK exclusive being printed in UK #289. Bob Budiansky wrote US #5-34, #37-42 & #44-55, and thus received writing credits on well over a hundred UK Transformers books. Marvel UK stalwart Steve Ridgeway wrote the first UK exclusive story, "Man of Iron", and Ralph Macchio converted his own TV screenplay for "The Big Broadcast of 2006", a US story reprinted in Issues 180-181 of the UK run. Also due to the 'board room' way that the US limited series was written, Macchio, Bill Mantlo and Jim Salicrup all received credit at some point in the first 8 issues.

Were there any differences in the UK reprints of US stories?

There were a number of changes in the US stories reprinted in the UK comic. For the first 26 issues a large number of pages, usually around 6 or 7 out of 11, were printed in black & white for financial reasons. These monochrome pages were usually taken from the master inking drawings of the US editions. As well as this, where the stories were split in half, a new “Next:” box was inserted at the ends of all the parts, and a new title & credit box put at the start of each segment.
As well as this, all American English words were Anglicised, including the title of US #41, “Totaled!”, reprinted as “Totalled!”.
Also as the “G. I. Joe vs. The Transformers” Limited series was not part of the standard UK continuity, references to it in “Gone But Not Forgotten”, reprinted in UK #107, were removed.
“The Big Broadcast of 2006”, which was printed in the US as a stop-gap, was based on the cartoon episode of the same name, which contradicted the post-Movie timeline put forward by the UK comics. Therefore it was given a new prologue and epilogue, and was presented as a story told by the captured Wreck-Gar to a Quintesson interrogator, leading onto the UK epic “Space Pirates”.
As a minor side-note, the last page in UK #324, a reprint of US #76, “Still Life”, was erroneously coloured due to a printing error.

Where do "Man of Iron"/"Enemy Within"/"Raiders of the Last Ark" fit in?

Well, the cynical answer is “they don’t”. At the time the stories were written as basically stand-alones, to fill the gaps between the US reprints. The whole idea of continuity was not introduced initially, despite the slight anomaly of nearly all the Autobots at the end of UK #8, and the following 9 issues featuring them all alive and well… However, with a little imagination they can be slotted in as happening in one of the respites in the first three stories.

Is the flashback in "Decepticon Dambusters" canon?

There’s no definitive answer for this one. The story as a whole was the first written to slot into the US continuity, but it’s a matter of opinion whether the story Ratchet tells the Dinobots, actually based on the television episode “More Than Meets the Eye”, took place or not. It can be claimed that it, along with the three stories listed above, took place during the limited series, or that there are enough inconsistencies in the story [a sudden appearance by Inferno, Optimus Prime and Megatron’s never-seen-again energy weapons] to point it out as not happening.

Was the crossover with "G. I. Joe" printed in the UK?

The series was not part of the standard UK continuity, though it was printed in the UK eventually. Instead, the first cycle of post-Movie stories were printed, introducing Death’s Head and incorporating the only long-term event of the limited series, the rebuilding of Bumblebee as Goldbug, though in the UK he was killed by Death’s Head. Also references to the series in “Gone But Not Forgotten” were altered. However, the series did see the light of day in Britain when it was decided to run the series as a back-up strip from April 1990, split into 16 parts.

What is Action Force, and what issues do Transformers appear in?

Action Force was the European name of the G. I. Joe toyline. In the UK in the mid 1980s, it had its own UK comic book, which like the Transformers’ series was made up of reprints of US material, and of indigenous stories. With the US crossover overlooked by Marvel UK, Action Force made a guest appearance in TF #125, which then switched over and was continued in Action Force #24-27.

When is Earthforce set?

Earthforce was a set of black-and-white five-page UK-only stories, mainly written in order to promote the series of Classic reissues in the country at around 1990/1991. The stories appeared in TF #255-289. Again, they don’t really fit anywhere, but the best fit is just after the conclusion of the main run. The deactivation Prowl etc. could be a side effect of the Nucleon, while other minor inconsistencies, such as Optimus Prime appearing in “Powermaster” form can be overlooked. This is the position taken by fanfic gods The Hub, so it’s good enough for the most of us.

How come "Target 2006" places the events of the Movie in 2006, unlike the film?

This only comes up because people assume that because events that happened in the cinematic movie are part of UK continuity, which the whole of this version was played out in the UK comic universe. This is not true. The following facts can be ascertained as to the events of the movie as far as the comic goes: -

 The battle at Autobot City takes place in 2006.
 A Decepticon force led by Megatron besieges Autobot City.
 Optimus Prime does arrive on Earth, and is mortally wounded by Megatron.
 Starscream jettisons Megatron into space after the unsuccessful attack.
 Unicron rebuilds him into Galvatron, a Decepticon named Lifespark becomes Cyclonus, and a third Decepticon is remade into Scourge.
 Galvatron returns to Cybertron, and kills Starscream.
 The Autobots do make contact with the Junkions, and Wreck-Gar at least joins them for the battle with Unicron.
 Hot Rod does battle with Galvatron inside Unicron, and opens the Matrix, becoming Rodimus Prime.
 Rodimus Prime casts Galvatron into space through Unicron’s leg.

Do the UK annual stories count?

The first Transformers annual was not strictly written to fit in with the established comic continuity, but “And There Shall Come a Leader” does fit in with the continuity. From 1986 on, Furman wrote many of the stories, and wove them into existing stories. However, some had more questionable claims than others. In the 1987 annual, a text retelling of the Headmasters saga was printed which varied from the original version in a number of ways. The 1988 annual included an alternate future story named “Peace” which featured, among others, Roadbuster and Sandstorm, who died fairly finally in “Time Wars” [TF #203]. In the 1989 annual, “Chain Gang” and “Trigger Happy” both didn’t mesh into the established continuity. Finally, the 1991 annual featured a story named “Another Time and Place”, which contradicts the Generation 2 comics, and thus is a matter of personal taste as to which alternative you choose.

Who was Death's Head?

Death’s Head is possibly Furman’s finest original creation. First intended as a plot device to introduce the UK’s future stories set after the events of Transformers: The Movie, Geoff Senior’s design for the character was so impressive that Furman gave him guest-star status in the 8-issue plotline which began with “Galvatron: Wanted – Dead or Alive” [TF #113-114]. The cybernetic bounty hunter was referred to by Furman as “the ultimate capitalist”. He was popular with readers, and made two further TF guest appearances, in “Headhunt” [TF #133-134] and “Legacy of Unicron” [TF #146-151]. The latter saw him disappear into Unicron’s time-portal, and he eventually turned up in Marvel UK’s Doctor Who Magazine, making an appearance in #135, “Crossroads in Time”, where he was reduced to human size. The character then guested in Dragon’s Claws #5, where his original body was largely destroyed. Death’s Head was then given his own 12-issue series by Marvel UK, as well as a new body, and made guest appearances in the US in “Fantastic Four” and “She-Hulk”.

Who are the Wreckers?

The Wreckers were the Autobots’ crack commando squad while Cybertron was under Decepticon control. They were initially led by a new Furman creation, Impactor, and consisted of Roadbuster, Whirl, Topspin, Twin Twist and another new character, Rack ‘n’ Ruin. They first appeared in the “Target: 2006” storyline, with Impactor debuting in TF #78, and the rest of the team in TF #82. In TF #84 Springer, Sandstorm and Broadside joined them, with the former taking over the leadership of the team when Impactor died in TF #88. The team were next seen in the “Return to Cybertron” storyline, printed in UK #98-104. Between this and their next appearance, in TF #165, Whirl disappeared. The team were back in action for the last 4 parts of the Flame storyline, from TF #165-169, and then journeyed to Earth to battle the temporally displaced Galvatron in TF #172-173. Sandstorm and Broadside were the placed into the Cybertronian Autobots’ Advance Surveillance Unit to search for Galvatron on Earth, who appeared in TF #188, TF #198 and TF #200. They were reunited with the rest of the team in TF #201, the third part of “Time Wars”, and the Wreckers then made a joint attempt with their Decepticon counterparts, the Mayhem Attack squad [see below] to attack Galvatron. However, Galvatron had forged an alliance with his past self, Megatron, and the two squads were taken by surprise by this development. Megatron killed Topspin in TF #202, and one of the Decepticons killed Sandstorm in TF #202, with Roadbuster killed by weapon feedback at the end of the same issue. Galvatron destroyed Rack ‘n’ Ruin and Twin Twist in TF #203. The remaining Wreckers, Springer and Broadside, formed the Survivors with Inferno, Skids and Decepticon deserters Carnivac and Catilla in TF #222.

Who are the Mayhem Attack Squad?

The first Mayhem Attack Squad clearly seen appear in TF #201, though there is a fan theory that Shrapnel, Bombshell, Kickback, Blitzwing, Astrotrain, Octane, Dirge, Thrust and Ramjet were a Mayhem Squad. However, there is no official material pointing to this. The squad in TF #201 were led by Carnivac, and consisted of Catilla, Flywheels, Battletrap, Chopshop and Venom, with Snarler later revealed as the group’s co-ordinator. They formed an uneasy alliance with the Autobot Wreckers in order to destroy Galvatron, but were taken unawares by his alliance with Megatron. Galvatron killed Battletrap and Venom, and one of the rogue Decepticons killed Chop Shop the same issue. Flywheels disappeared at some point in the “Time Wars” saga, and is generally presumed dead. Carnivac and Catilla later joined with a group of Autobots to form the Survivors. Snarler formed a second Mayhem squad to hunt the deserters, formed in TF #229 and consisting of Spinister. Needlenose, Bludgeon, Strangehold and Octopunch. They travelled to earth in the Earthforce era, and targeted the Survivors group. Led by Snarler, they attacked Carnivac in TF #237, and in #239 Bludgeon killed Catilla. The group next appeared in TF #272, as Carnivac planned to take revenge on them for the death of Catilla, killing Needlenose the same issue. Carnivac then killed Snarler and Spinister in TF #274, with the remaining squad captured by Earthforce and the Survivors. The remaining trio escaped Earthbase in TF #282, and in TF #284 Shockwave assigned them to assassinate Starscream. A combination of Starscream, Soundwave and the Autobot Earthforce stopped them.

Who on Earth was Krunix?

The US Headmasters mini-series features, among other things, a lot of art mistakes where character designs and colour schemes have been switched. One of the more notable was the switching of Cyclonus’ distinctive design with a much simpler one, most likely intended for a Nebulan Targetmaster. While this was overlooked in the US [the Headmasters serial was the first US comic appearance of Cyclonus and Scourge, aside from the Movie mini-series], Cyclonus and Scourge were central characters in the UK storylines, and the mistake would cause confusion. The decision was taken to re-title this squarer Cyclonus as Krunix, with Cyclonus appearing properly later in the serial when his role was more central, and his art better researched.

Were any of the UK stories ever reprinted?

For a while the main title had a sister book, called Transformers Collected Comics, which reprinted whole stories from the start of the run. Also a number of Specials were printed in the UK, usually combining two-part stories. “Man of Iron” was reprinted in US #33-34. Older stories were also split in half and reprinted as back-ups in TF comics from TF #221 onwards. “Galvatron: Wanted – Dead or Alive” was reprinted in TF #221-224, “Headhunt” in TF #225-228, “Resurrection” in TF #229-232, “Worlds Apart” in TF #255-258, “Legacy of Unicron” in TF #290-301, “In the National Interest” [TF #302-307], “The Enemy Within” [TF #308-309, #313-318], “The Big Shutdown” [In colour, TF #330-331] and “The Greatest Gift of All” [TF #332].

Were the Transformers Universe profiles ever printed in the UK?

Not in their original form, in the comics at least. The US limited series entries were edited and printed in pairs in the UK comic as ‘The Transformers A to Z’, while the trade paperback collecting the series was available in the UK. The second series, originally printed in the later issues of the US comic, has yet to be commercially available in the UK.

What do Impactor/Emirate Xaaron/Rack 'n' Ruin transform into?

A pullout in a UK Transformers special gave Impactor’s alternate mode as a drill tank, and Rack ‘n’ Ruin’s as a spaceship/jet. Emirate Xaaron’s alternate mode is unknown, but he did at one point possess the ability to transform to a ‘vehicular combat mode’, though in TF #168 he believed the shock might kill him, having not used his alternate mode for hundreds of years.

Who are the main non-toy Transformers comic characters?

The main ones are as follows:

Guardian: Not so much a Transformer as a powerful robot, probably built in number. First appeared in TF #20, on board the Ark. Subsequently deactivated by Windcharger, then rebuilt by Shockwave and left to guard the Ark. Then destroyed by Swoop in TF #32. Later appeared in a dream sequence in the 1987 annual story “Victory”.

Straxus: Initially appeared in #17-18 of the US comic, reprinted in TF #66-69. Leader of the Decepticons on Cybertron after the departure of Megatron, and took the title of Lord Straxus. He was seemingly destroyed by Blaster in TF #69, but his head survived and he attempted to take over Megatron’s body in TF #103. He was eventually driven out of Megatron’s body when the latter too fell from the Spacebridge, and eventually took over a copy of Megatron’s body. This version finally destroyed itself in TF #244.

Xaaron: Held the title of Emirate. First appeared in 1985 annual story “And There Shall Come a Leader”. The only Autobot to survive the killings of the Autobot Council of Elders, Xaaron then led the Autobot resistance. Co-ordinated the eventually unsuccessful Operation: Volcano in TF #78-88, and helped identify Optimus Prime in TF #100. After this made a number of appearances before being possessed by Primus, then killed by Unicron in TF #321.

Impactor: Led the Wreckers, first appearing in TF #78, and was killed saving Xaaron’s life in TF #88. His corpse was resurrected by Flame in TF #166, and initially helped the mad scientist. His personality later resurfaced, and he sacrificed himself again to save Cybertron in TF #169.

Rack ‘n’ Ruin: A distinctive conjoined twin, who first appeared in TF #82. Appeared in most other Wrecker stories [see above], until his death in TF #203. As an interesting side-note, a kitbash of Rack ‘n’ Ruin was made by fan Prowl Pants.

Flame: An insane Autobot scientist, who tried to take over Cybertron using controlled zombies. First appeared in TF #166, and in TF #168 showed his alternate mode, a flame-throwing tank. He was killed in TF #169 by Impactor.

Is the Galvatron in "Target: 2006" the same one as in "Rhythms of Darkness"?

Nope. The former is from the Movie possible future, where Galvatron is unsuccessful and cast out into space, whereas the latter is from a universe where Unicron is able to destroy Cybertron. It seems logical that the version from the end of the run is the one at large in “Perchance to Dream”, who clearly tells Wheeljack he took no part in the Time Wars.

What other comics have TF characters appeared in?

There have been few out-and-out guest star appearances. The clearest in that TF Universe super-heroine Circuit Breaker appears in Secret Wars II #3. Seaspray made a cameo in an Archie comic, while a hybrid Transformer appeared in an issue of Wolverine. Also an altered version of Galvatron appeared in The Incomplete Death’s Head #1.

Is there a timeline putting all this into order anywhere?

The bible for most fanfic writers is Martin McVay’s timeline, available here.

Is there an appearance guide for these comics? Or a ‘Book of the Dead’?

Yes, both available at this site, here and here respectively.

What came out in the UK with regard to Generation 2?

With Marvel’s UK line in big trouble, Grandreams took on the G2 book. The first comic was dated October 1994. The first two issues consisted of new material, with the US material too violent and too dependent on the second G. I. Joe crossover. These were drawn by Robin Smith, with the writing credited to Furman, who later denied knowledge of these stories. The third issue reprinted US G2 #4, edited for space and violence. The fourth issue contained reprints of “Tales of Earth” Parts One and Two [printed in the fourth and fifth issues of the US series], while the fifth contained an edited version of “The Power and the Glory” from US #5. The series was cancelled after the fifth issue. The comics also contained profiles and posters.

Are any of the comics available now?

Titan has just reissued two trade paperbacks, named “All Fall Down” and “End of the Road”. These collect US #68-74 and #75-80 respectively, equivalent to the material printed in UK #306-318 and #319-332. Plans for further books are on the horizon.
The UK comics are best found on ebay, Selling for anything from £2 upwards.
Failing that, comic scans are available either on various TF sites [see the Comics Scans and Links pages] or on CD-R from this site.

It would be wise to mention the name of the story "Ancient Relics".

That booklet jobby is owned by Impactorr Returns on Transfans, a couple of weeks ago he scanned it onto the net, if you look through the old pages you should find it. I agree with half the stuff and disagree with half of it- I'll go into more detail when I'm not as tired.

Ask impactor returns off transfans and he'll probally let you have/copy them or whatever:cool:

"Action force" was a back up during the 100's numbered comics also.Cant remember till I get back to my mums when it exactly started. Yes Hercules was a early back up strip.

Mike collins is credited with the script of "crisis of command" pts 1 and 3 and James Hill is credited with "crisis of command pt2".

The latter "GI-joe" strip was actually fully titled "Gi-joe:The action force".

I believe the collected comics reprinted the Uk only storys. I know Target 2006 only got up to the part when Galvatron shows Jazz captured to the autobots then they pointed out they had lost the 'master' versiosn and coudlent continue :-/
Collected comics tended to have around 3 parts of a story in them as I recall.

Thanks for all the input! If anyone has alternate theories for anything [eg Earthforce] let me know, and I'll put them in... With regards to collected comics, I'm 99% they did at least the US mini-series...

Regarding Earthforce, in that Powermaster Prime talks to Grimlock about the need to be ready for the coming of Unicron, this would imply that things take place before all that stuff at the end of the run. My personal view is that the whole lot could be taken as completly out of continuity with Furman just using it as an oppurtunity vto play with characters and tell some tales. Although saying that there are clear links with past issues such as Time Wars, it is possible that this is an alternate universe, there have been several shown already - perhaps the Rythm's of Darkness/Evil Rodimus stories are from this same universe as they too do not fit in with the American run continuity.
