I'd actually have to recommend waiting for the Takara version on this one...unless you're willing to pay $5+ for the part and can find someone who's making them.

It's a great mold except for looking completely retarded without a weapon...

Don't most of us have a few spare weapons by this stage in our collections? Or is the attraction something that'll store seamlessly in vehicle mode?

Because lists are so much fun...

1 - The existing part looks awkward and broken without the barrel.

2 - The figure should have come with a weapon. An attachment where the gun's barrel was going that turned the engine into some sort of tool instead of a weapon would've been suitable as well. Would have definitely eliminated complaint #1.

3 - I have plenty of spare weapons, but very few are suitable for the Alternators scale and none of them come close to matching the quality of an Alternator weapon...not that the replacement barrel I have is of the highest quality either.
