Prof: I want to know when grades are due.
Me: They're due 72 hours after your final exam.
Prof: I don't have a final exam.
Me: Ok. Then they're due 72 hours after your last class.
Prof: You're not answering my question.
Me: Yes. Whenever your last class is, the grades are due three days later.
Prof: But I need to know when I have to have the grades in by for graduating student.

Seriously! How ****in' dense is this guy?! YOU TAKE YOUR LAST DAY OF CLASS, AND YOU COUNT 1, 2, 3 DAYS LATER, AND YOU HAVE THE FRIGGIN' DUE DATE! MORON!

I'm quite surprized professors don't forget to breathe.

There was a professor who just couldn't wrap his head around the fact that he had to come up with his own grading policy since he was the instructor for the course (ie use your common sense. Did the student meet your expectations, surpass them or not even come close? Grade accordingly).

He was asking for a specific date, not a moving target.

That's the thing. The system is set up so that it's due three days after his class officially ends (he should know by now when his class ends) so I can't give him a specific date.

Got another call with pretty much the same line of questioning. Plus an added bonus:

Me: When is your final exam?
Prof: Uhhhhhhh (for about half a minute) How about today?
Me: Ok you're issuing your final exam today?
Prof: Yeah.
Me: Then it would be due on thursday.
Prof: But I need an actual date . . .

Yes you can. If the last day of finals is Friday, May 8, then tell them that the absolute latest time to turn grades in would be Monday, May 11.

Uh, Clay, how is "Three days after your last class" not a sufficient answer for the deadline?

They do know how to spell, though, yes? I suppose no one other than myself and Rick Fox is perfect.

Well, the difference being that a 'professor' is supposed to represent that he has enough intelligence to impart knowledge onto other people. An internet poster only needs to know enough to bitch. :)

Erm... you may want to check the dictionary on that one. It's possible Rick Fox is flying solo in perfectionland.... ;)

You're right. My whole argument is void because I misspelled a word.

Point is that if they can't figure out a deadline based on the information I've given or can't figure out how to grade his damn class then he's not capable of doing a very important part of his job.

Tenure. Word to the wise, if one pisses on the instructor, usually the instructor pisses on one's grade. Try to be the one pissed off, not pissed on.

I always keep my dictionary by my computer. You'd be surprised how often it comes in handy - or even surprized...;)

Edit: Whoops, that was actually addressed at secretcode - thread suddenly became busy while I was typing. (Just switched to my wife's laptop - it's much faster, so I shouldn't fall behind again tonight.)

@ RID - my (original) point was that you didn't even technically misspell, anyway :)

Ah right. Only looked on dictionary.com. Now that I looked on webster I see that the "z" is indeed a spelling variant. Guess my point wasn't voided afterall. ;)

Princeton doesn't seem to quote the 'z' variant.

When you'll actually get them is generally the last date a final can be, +3. If lucky. Probably easiest just to work off that. Chances are what's being fished for is a latest possible date, and trying to get data earlier by holding staff to a range of deadlines will meet with the usual internal politics of any academic institution.

Is there anything fresher than complaining about the person you work for?
