based on the clips I've seen I can see Beowulf being the most likely contender myself.

Should not be that hard to get one, even though 300 looked awesome I don't thin there's a movie with better visual effects.Beowulf looks nice, but lacks of personality and warmth, don't think it is a serious competition. But I don't care anyway.

// Forgot to mention Sunshine.A great movie,THIS could be a real competition, but I doubt that it has any chance to win against TF.

I think Transformers' biggest advantage is that there aren't many films that have done the same sort of thing with effects before (as in giant transforming robots). From what I know of that list (and to be honest, films in general over the past decade have been so lacking in imagination, originality and quality I don't particularly keep up), there isn't much that makes this sort of leap - Golden Compass is the same sort of stuff seen in LoTR/Narnia, Harry Potter and Pirates have refinements of the stuff seen in earlier films, and so on.

IMO, as fans we're a little bit too close to see just how good the effects for Transformers are. The stuff seen in the film is pretty similar to what's been happening in our heads for the past decade, if that makes any sense - as fans, we aren't as blown away by giant Transformers hurling each other around as people who haven't really paid much attention since '85, if at all.

Vote chainsmoking for coherence! :\

I agree with Cliffjumper in that the effects were visually fresh for Transformers. The other films mainly applied expansions on previous effects. We'll have to wait and see but geez there are a lot of nominies in this category...

Agreed. In the case of Beowulf, all they mostly did was enhance actors with CGI, then put them over prerendered backgrounds. Transformers actually had to make believable giant robots in a real setting.

Wasn't this already reported? We discussed the relative merits of CGI Ray Winston Vs. Optimus Prime?

Ahhhh ok. the thread that Dalek and I are thinking of appears to have been just a nomination for visual effects.

Awwww. I wanted to do it. :(

Actually, if the writters are still on strike and the actors won't cross the picket line the visual effects award could be bumped up to the big time...

Yeah, my thread was apparently the shortlist of nominations. They've now actually announced the final contenders in each category.

Hmmm.... The visual effects in Bourne weren't that spectacular. In fact, I'd say that the fact that they were low key made the film more gritty and real.

My knowledge on these things isn't great, but Cinematography and Visual Effects are two different things, right? Because if we're talking camera angles and use of cameras, then I take back my previous statement, because this was excellent in Bourne.

In very basic terms, cinematography is how a scene is lit.
