Bit of quick site feedback, anyone who's around...

Post by Denyer »

Update: a lot of what's below isn't current. A wide design is live and tweaks being made.

Update: a wide version is currently live, notes below are from previous messing around. The new design isn't currently active for the forums.

How does that look, and if it's hideously broken in your browser, what browser and what version?

Link to switch it off:

It's a bit bright isn't it? Burns my eyes...

Hmm, yeh, bit white for my tastes too, sorry. Maybe carry across the gradiented light grey?

Do like the peg hole, though :)

Yeah, I like the layout and the peg hole thing, but I'm not too keen on the colour. As dalek said, it's quite bright.

It's probably worth mentioning as well that the contrast is off on my monitor os that things appear darker than they really are (makes it a bugger to watch porn youtube) so if it's bright for me it must be like a deathray to everyone else.

A bit on the bright side, could probably get used to it, but prefer the darker color scheme. I do concur the layout is nice however.

Very bright, and it looks like it's copying Shortpacked's layout.

I find all of that white a bit bright as well.

The white isn't so bad but the Yellow when you go into the comic sections is harsh.
The bunnies, they give me knowledge it is neat.

Pretty much the same as everyone here. I like the lay out, but the brightness hurts my eyes.

It's been a bastard to get things to look right on top of, and one suggestion I kinda wish I hadn't made way back when... depending on where text falls on the gradient it gets a bit lost, particularly at smaller sizes.

Does need to be a bit darker, I think we're all agreed. (Though for the love of your eyes, folks, turn the brightness and contrast down on your monitors a bit. Have still got mine fairly bright, just not TFT-fresh-out-of-the-box bright. Monitors should be set so that a white page with black text -- eg, a word processor -- is comfortable to look at.)

Those who find it bright, how do you feel about this? --

oafe.net, and that guy and Willis both scabbed it off earlier sites. It got thrown in 'cause that's what I think every time I look at the current rounded corners. Also wanted to check if the current browsers would be happy with the cut-away (browsers haven't always applied transparency to background images correctly) -- happily they seem okay, though I haven't looked at it in older versions of IE yet.

Spaaace... page weight... tricky to add a new section to... want to do stuff to improve things for partially-sighted users...

The aim's to have something functionally close to what we've got now, then I can duplicate the design and start on a wider layout, making sure all of the pages fit things appropriately.

A lightish grey, like the box I'm currently typing in, would look spiffy :)

Agree re: the Shortpacked thing. Packaging is an obvious theme for a toy-related website - it's no more copying Shortpacked! than any TF site that uses the 1980s logo colours on its' typeface is copying another.

Does it look as bright once there's an appreciable amount of text on a page --

eg, http://tfarchive.com/toys/reviews/mov_starscream.php ?

Not quite as much, but still a little dazzling.

All the different schemes that were used were funky imho.

For anyone who hasn't seen some of the other speculation --

http://tfarchive.com/community/attachme ... tid=549552
http://img184.imagevenue.com/img.php?lo ... _552lo.jpg
http://www.tfarchive.com/community/atta ... tid=549605
http://tfarchive.com/redesign_css/?styles=allwhite.css
http://tfarchive.com/redesign_css/?styles=pink.css

The eventual idea's to give people a choice if they want it. It's conceivable (though unlikely) that we can support different content widths as well. Getting pages to reflow neatly where there's full-page-width tabular data (used in most sections, particularly indexes) is tricky.

Both of us would like things to be less dark, but if most people aren't keen we'll aim to accomodate...

Sufficiently off-white and comfortable for reading?
