Horrible and persistent pop-ups

Post by Clogs »

(Not those sort...)

Hi, I'm having trouble with pop-ups from gambling sites and some rather questionable dating ones which seem to be riding on the TFA. This still seems to be happening despite having the blocker on max and only enabling when needed.

Any ideas?

won't be associated with the archive seeing as we don't run anything that's intrusive in any way, shape or form.

Only thing I can suggest trying is running the likes of Ad Aware and Spybot on full searches and see if there's anything more malicious on your system.

Thanks. I'll have another go and see what I can find!

(I did not wish to cast natursiums on the TFA!)

Oh and, if you're not already, use Firefox :)

Had Firefox - until my computer-industry-programmer friend killed everything when he installed XP for me! I have AVG now, which he says is OK, coupled with AdAware.

Really can't stress enough the importance of not using Internet Explorer really.

Did you have any joy with any of the scans?

Scan found lots of little things to quarantine - and I updated the Ad-Aware SE, only to still find the Poker site pop-up appear immediately I entered the Internet again, and that, plus two others, still come up while I'm in the TFA.

Could just be the fact that I TFA most often, I suppose... Still, I can't block the 3 offenders so far. Trying again...

Spybot- Search & Destroy - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html is worth a shot too. Similar idea to AdAware but seems to pick up on some stuff that AdAware doesn't.

You using Firefox yet ? ;)

Sadly, no FireFox (mmm, remember Eros of Titan?). My computer genius friend insisted that I shouldn't install it on my newly XPd system, as it kept clashing with AdAware on the old one and everything seized up. Spybot might be worth trying...

There are, as I mentioned, just 3 sites: one dating, one poker and one, oddly, WWF. I have discovered a bit in the Orange pop-up blocker that might let me target them incoming... if I can figure out how it works... hmmm. I'm sure it's easy to follow the guidance and ignore the bad grammar. Will try later tonight...

I fear, Ackula, that I will have to and, if it all goes spliffst I'll witter on at my friend Rich to come fix it... The old pop-ups have gone away (yay!), but a new one for a casino site has appeared.

How to I tell the world at large that I am not a male seeking support - as it were; not a compulsive gambler, 'cos I think it's a waste of time and, anyways, I can't understand the rules of much more than 'snap'; and I'm not seeking female companionship.

Sheesh!
