Headmasters {What happened?}

Post by Cassettacon 27 »

Could anyone please tell me what happened in the series. All I know is that Soundwave is rebuilt into Soundblaster, Ultra Magnus is killed, Cybertron is destroyed, and Rodimus passes the Matrix of leadership to Fortress Maximus.

What else happens?

Rodimus takes the Matrix with him.

I'll let McFeely or Spengs post the big old recap. They like doing things like that. ;)

Well, if you insist. :) Using American terminology...

Headmasters are a race of small robots that fled Cybertron during the wars four million years ago. They crash-landed on the planet of Master, where the harsh environments caused many of them to meet their ends. Some of the survivors built larger, lifeless bodies called "Transtectors," and had to perfect transformation to merge with them as heads, becoming Headmasters. Some of them, however, chaffed under the leadership of Fortress (Cerebros in the US, but he's just so different in Japan that I'm using that name to make the distinction), and united under another robot called Zarak to fight back. Fortress's team forced them off of Master, and Zarak hooked up with Galvatron.

The series starts out a year after the events of "Return of Optimus Prime." The release of the Matrix's energy in that two-parter has caused Vector Sigma to destabilise, reverting to a "neutral balance" which allows the Decepticons free access to Cybertron again. Galvatron's forces invade the planet, bolstered by the addition of the Decepticon Headmasters, intent on taking control of Vector Sigma so they can take over the planet. The Autobots fight back, and the sudden arrival of the Autobot Headmasters forces the Decepticons to retreat, but Optimus Prime heads down into the depths of the planet to stabilise Vector Sigma himself. Unfortunately, since he doesn't have the Matrix, that means he'll be sacrificing himself to do it. The Autobots searh Earth for the Matrix, which has been hidden by Prime to recharge, and Soundwave and Blaster have a final battle at the North Pole that destroys them both. Hot Rod and the Headmasters then find the Matrix and take it to Cybertron, where Alpha Trion's ghost (who's been helping navigate Optimus's way) re-energises it and turns Hot Rod into Rodimus Prime again. He and Optimus dispatch Galvatron, but Rodimus can impliment the Matrix, Optimus sacrifices himself by merging with the computer and stabilising it.

Next, the Decepticons rebuild Soundwave as Soundblaster as part of a plan to unleash their newest weapon, the "Mad Machine," on the Autobots. Blaster is rebuilt as Twincast to stop him. Battle Beasts then guest star as the Autobots force the Decepticons off their planet, and Daniel steps to the forefront to destroy Galvatron's latest doo-dad, an artificial meteor with metal-warping gravity engines.

Zarak - appearing only shrouded in shadow at this point - lures the Autobot Headmasters into a trap on Planet Praun, which they have to call on all their training to escape, switching heads with each other to overcome it. Sixshot then reveals his varied transformation powers by attacking six different countries.

Then, Vector Sigma develops a new alloy named Cybertronuron, which Galvatron is intent on having for himself. His forces attack Cybertron, but Zarak, having suffering one bit of abuse too many at Galvatron's hands, orchestrates his own supremacy by having Mindwipe plant a bomb at Cybertron's core, and luring Galvatron there just as it detonates. The Autobots are able to escape the planet, but it is decimated by the explosion and left uninhabitable. Rodimus, Kup and Blurr set off to find a new world for the Transformers, leaving Fortress in charge (though Rodimus keeps the Matrix), and Zarak establishes himself as Decepticon leader, collecting and harnessing the plasma energy released by the explosion of Cybertron.

Zarak's troops then take control of the Solar One, and Earth satellite designed to gather energy from the sun's rays. The energy is directed to a small planet in a dark nebula off in space, which Zarak has enslaved, where a massive Transtector is being constructed for him. The Autobots save a Peruvian village from a volcanic eruption triggered by the Decepticons in another energy-gathering stunt, and Fortress then reveals his ultimate transformation, combining with his battleship, Maximus, to form Fortress Maximus, in order to destroy a monstrous, carnivorous plant that the Decepticon unleash on San Francisco.

Conducting a geological survey on Mars, Spike, Daniel, Wheelie and the Trainbots discover a Decepticon plot to blow the entire planet up in an attempt to acquire more plasma energy. The Autobot Headmasters arrive, but Fortress's energies are nullified by a burst of plasma energy, preventing him from transforming to Fortress Maximus, and Zarak steps out of the shadows for the first time, taking the opportunity to unleash his Transtector, flying to Mars and combining with it before thrashing Fortress Maximus and renaming himelf - no longer Zarak, he is now Scorponok. Mars is destroyed, and Zarak is about to coronate himself as Decepticon Emperor when Galvatron returns and retakes the seat of power.

After the Autobots respond to an SOS from the planet Sandra with a donation of energy, Spike convinces Galvatron to hold a peace conference, suggesting a joint energy production scheme. Galvatron insists that Spike must leave the most important thing in the world to him - Daniel - on Earth so that he will accept Spike's neutrality, but it is then revealed that this is not Galvatron at all, but a disguised Sixshot. Using this deception to their advantage, the Decepticons get a head start on the Autobots and depart for space, planning to attack other worlds and harvest their energy.

Cue a series of episodes where the Decepticons attack a random planet of the week. First they hit the insect world of Beehive, then the twin interlinked worlds of Sperity and Toluin, then the corrupt planet Dallos, where they find Battle Beast who gives them encoded computer data that will reveal Scorponok's weak spot . The next target is the planet of Paradise, and then the Autobot and Decepticon Clones join the fight as both factions search for super-powerful proton energy on Pirate Planet.

The Deceptions then return to Earth and initiate a series of attacks on the Autobots. Sixshot battles Ultra Magnus, and kills him with his seventh secret transformation. Decepticon attacks intensify, and as Zarak defies Galvatron and continues with his own plan to destroy the Earth, the Autobots uncover Galvatron's own true plan - using the amassed energy, he actually plans to incorporate the planet Earth into his own body. Galvatron confronts Zarak in Alaska, where they are attacked by the Autobot Headmasters, and Galvatron fights them in an ice field, where they unleash their combined energies and defeat him, entombing him in the ice. A dramatic explosion follows, and Galvatron is out of the picture for good.

Zarak installs himself as Decepticon Emperor, and once again resumes his plan for the destruction of Earth. Spike is injured in a Decepticon attack, and an enraged Chromedome is prevented from joining the battle by Fortress because he's over emotional. Fortress uses all of his energy to remove the shrapnel in Spike's body with telekinesis, and Chromedome finishes Highbrow's decoding work, locating Scorponok's weak spot and informing Fortress Maximus, who critically damages him, forcing the Decepticons to flee the planet.

The Decepticons invade planet Master, and a refugee ship escapes to alert the Autobots, who are busy on Earth attempting to clean up the Decepticons' mess, removing leftover plasma bombs. Unfortunately, one is triggered in the process. Meanwhile, three of Wheelie's superiors - Pointblank, Sureshot and Crosshairs - have come to Earth, and volunteer to take the bombs aboard Maximus so they can explode harmlessly in space. On the way, however, they cross paths with the refugee ship from Master, which is being pursued by a trio of their old foes, Slugslinger, Misfire and Triggerhappy. The Master refugees are brought on board Maximus, and then take the bombs out into space, where they explode, fusing the Master refugees onto the arms of the six larger robots fighting outside. Thus, we get the Targetmasters. The Autobots then pursue the Decepticons to Master, where Chromedome meets up with an old friend of his, only to have the Decepticons capture and brainwash him, and install a bomb in him, forcing Chromedome to kill him before he can blow up Maximus. It's harsh.

Next, the Decepticons capture Wheelie in order to ransom him for the secrets of Fortress Maximus's weapon, the Master Sword, so that Scorponok can build a shield to counter it. In a battle that introduces the Duocons, Wheelie is freed but the Decepticons get the data, and Scorponok sets about constructing his "Zarak Shield" in a cavern. The Autobots track them down a force them to flee, and Chromedome then puts together a plan with the armies of Master to defeat the Decepticons once and for all. Unfortunately, the Zarak Shield is now complete, and the Master Sword falls before it.

The Decepticons head back to Earth, and the Autobots pursue them, but in an asteroid storm, Sixshot and Daniel are swept up and crash on a barren alien world, where Daniel starts to realise that Sixshot's not all bad as he protects him from the dangers of the planet. The Autobots return and collect Daniel, but Chromedome is not convinced of Sixshot's good deeds. Scorponok, meanwhile, is forced to set down in the asteroid belt to affect repairs, allowing Sixshot to catch up to them - Scorponok is not best pleased, as he considered him expendable and planned to leave him behind. Sixshot then challenges Chromedome to a one-on-one duel, which Chromedome accepts, but even as Daniel attempts to stop the fight, Scorponok takes off, leaving Sixshot behind as a bomb planted by the Duocons detonates and destroys the asteroid, and apparently Sixshot.

The Decepticons make it back to Earth ahead of the Autobots, and Scorponok goes into seclusion, once again beginning his scheme to destroy the Earth. Operating out of the lost sunken continent of Lemuria, he crafts the ancient city's miracle metal (apparently called "Crysmag," I'm still trying to confirm this) into giant "Death Towers" which erupt at focal points across the world. As the Autobot Earth forces attempt to destroy them, their attacks only lead to disaster as the towers release destructive energy waves when struck, wreaking havoc across the Earth, unleasing energy that is harnessed by the Decepticons' orbiting satellite. The Autobots return to Earth and do their best to combat the threat, and the surviving Sixshot, who stowed away on board Maximus, tracks Scorponok to Lemuria and discovers his plan, defying him and escaping as Scorponok attacks him. The Autobots then engages the Decepticons in a final battle at the North Pole, where Sixshot lends a helping hand, and all the Autobots combine their energies to empower Fortress Maximus, who uses the Master Sword to destroy Scorponok's Transtector and end the threat.

The series then ends with the Decepticons having been forced off Earth, the Autobots departing too, and Daniel saying a tearful goodbye.

There are longish discussions of the box set in the news forum, if you take a look around. :)

Get changing, then, because it is indeed Japanese audio with English subtitles. The dub's on it too.
