Yes, I would loudly insist that said exchange be conducted publically before witnesses. The implication of requiring a private area is that there is something to hide; either on the part of the detainer or detainee.

*edit* Ooo, look, I have 20 posts in binary... (10100)

In Finland it's a theft if you go through the counter without paying. Most of the stores let you pay it off immediatly after though even in the most obvious theft attempts. And of course in cases that the customer simply forgot to pay (old people and such, which is the majority in these situations) it isn't considered as such a big deal and the cashier just asks the customer to pay it.

Well then it's just a matter of misunderstanding. Even in Finland we perfer to handle it first in public if the customer agrees. But if the customer says he hasn't taken anything but still won't empty his pockets than they usually handle it in private.

Thanks D!

Well from listening about these security guards they seem to be very sloppy. They should not be following people around as to make it so obvious. Also they can't do much unless they have solid proof. Yet don't look at us so bad.

You know what? A year or two ago, I would have read this, shrugged, and maybe said 'lighten up, they're just doing their job...' That was before one of my friends got a job working store security. That was before I started hearing the stories...Now, well, now I'm convinced that store security people are some of the most inept, corrupt, power-mad people in the world.
Seriously, you wouldn't believe what I hear from this guy...sleeping on the job...racial profiling...age profiling...gender profiling...constantly brutalizing suspects...taking bribes or sexual favors to let suspects go...the entire security force for all the stores in the city leaving work early to go drinking...not only do they admit to this, but they seem almost proud of it...
I hope that this **** is isolated to just this one company, but I'd seriously doubt it...

You have good reasons to doubt. Lots of bad things happen back there. Most of which you said. It is so easy for things to happen.

Actually, my Ancient Epic professor once saw a person steal an ethics book from the university book store.
