Personally, I'd like to think that kitbashes were of an all-round better standard than the Energon Dinobots...

I'm also pretty sure I swapped Ramjet for some Proset cards. Anyone remember Proset cards? One of them was Steve Castle, though. I sign him every time I play on CM2 in an attempt to justify my stupidity...

Despite slight misgivings over Midnight Express' proportions, RiD Rail Racer is still probably the best combiner I've ever seen. The design from top-to-bottom is superb... I'm not keen on the combined modes of the Energon ones, despite the nifty figures, and them limbs being 50% repaints was a pain - I mean, there's a bit of variation even in the original Aerialbots.

I have absolutely no desire to see "G1" Dinobots combining myself... I think it'd be a lose-lose situation, if nothing else - those of us who don't like the idea wouldn't bite, and those who like the idea would be disappointed in the result, having "known" what they wanted it to look like for years.

In retrospect, am I the only one surprised McNugget and Fries didn't use combining Dinobots in War & Peace?

I'm sure that, given long enough, they'd have gotten there. Once they'd gotten Sunstorm, Bumblejumper, Magnus/Prime/Bruvva and the Female Autobots out of their system.

Actually, it wouldn't surprise me if "The Beast Within" could be squeezed into DW continuity...

I think the biggest problem with combining dinobots is their shape. It's easier to do with vehicles which can be boxy...which the dinobots are not.

You can either make a combiner with no articulation but retain the appearance of the dinos relatively well, or one with plenty of articulation but sacrifice the individual dinos. I don't really see how else it would work.

Alas, I sold a huge quantity of my still functioning Transformers last Christmas, as, working in practical environmental conservation, I jump from contract to contract (usually in under a year...), and around the UK, and they were just taking up too much space (as my fiancee was always kind to point out...).

Still, most went to good homes that'll probably appreciate them more than I did.

My collection is a lot smaller now, and I think hard before buying any new fellows, but I suppose I appreciate each of THEM all the more for it.

As to combiners, they're hit or miss - and mostly miss in my opinion.

I love RID Railracer, and would cast my vote on the best gestalt there.

I certainly have no interest in a gestalt made of 'G1' Dinobots. Just seems wrong and pointless to me. They're great in and of themselves. A well though out dino-based gestalt would be interesting though.

Yeah, Rail Racer's pretty nifty. Not really big on gestalts, but he's got a good deal of playability. Points got to Predaking for the surprizing amount of articulation in a G1 figure. Only reason I wouldn't recommend Preddy is that he's damned expensive.

Predaking gets brownie points also for not having a ridicilously huge "center bot" compared to the other members of the combiner team, unlike Defensor or Bruticus, for example...

For the time period produced, Predaking (and to some degree, its individual components) is surprisingly good in terms of ariculation and proportions.

Really, for all the flak G1 combiners get for being immobile bricks, Predaking is really thoroughly articulated and quite fun on the whole.

Yeh, giving him four chunky stumps sure put paid to those fears...

From "G1", we're definitley looking at Sixliner for the win.

I'm still partial to Bruticus. Of all the Scramble-Type combiners, it's the one that looks most 'natural' when combined, and the individual robot and alt modes are generally pretty nice. (Swindle's got arm issues, but...)

All four of the little ones have "arm issues" - Swindle's actually got the closest to hands of them all... Brawl's are practically drawn on, Blast-Off has weird spoon things, Vortex won an Oscar for his role in "Lifeboat"...

They don't have 'arm' issues, they have 'hand' issues. But I consider that VERY minor when compared to most figures of that size in the G1 line.

hey ! i thought the protectobots were the best things since sliced energon

blue fire engines, ambulance-sized motobikes, and first-aid was the only doctor this side of ratchet. defensor himself didn't have lots of superfluous aternate mode bits hanging off him either

... i don't know why i said that... i can't think of any gestalts that did... my nostalgia again...

edit : come to think of it, first aid was the only doctor to look anything like he did in the comic... bonus points there

The classic combiners needed extra parts to put the robots together.

The micromaster combiners in the other hand need the robots to put the extra parts together.

But yeah, I can see where you're coming from: Sixliner was the only one of the bunch that actually put the extra parts into some good use when not in the gestalt mode. And it wasn't retarded like the 'jet' that other micromaster gestalts came with.
