Default American DVDs. GRRRRRR!!!

I just experienced something very annoying and there is nobody around to complain to so I thought I would bring my beef here. Why do American DVDs need to have so much un-fast-forwardable sh*te on them? I just prepared to jump into bed and watch a movie, grabbing one from a pile of Japanese region Hollywood DVDs thinking it was Japanese then finding out it wasn't and having to change my region code to watch it. I'm kind of accepting of this inevitability. However my slight irritation turns gradually into blinding rage as I am forced to sit through the cheesiest of anti-piracy warnings and 15 minutes or previews before I can get into bed, relax and watch the movie. To top it off I have to waste my time at some stage trying to find a firmware flash for my DVD drive or I will be a slave to this pathetic excuse for a region code for the rest of my computer's unnatural life.

Jesus Christ, what is wrong with this picture? Aussie DVDs have a black screen with a warning that flashes for about 5 seconds and if you're very unlucky, there might be some crappy trailers in the extra features. Japanese DVDs are the same. I thought the days of FFing through half a dozen previews to get to the start of a movie came to a close at the beginning of this century. Obviously not for about 250 million or more Americans. I offer the US and A my humblest condolences on what can only be decribe as PRECIOUS TIME STOLEN FROM YOUR LIFE. I can only suggest that you see it for what it is and seek to reclaim this time from the vile perpetrators.

End rant and thank you anyone who is listening. Appreciate it.

I find that, in about 90% of cases, the anti piracy guff and trailers can either be FFed through, or just bypassed by hitting Menu...

You could try playing them via a PC with VLC. Think that just ignores restrictions. It's possible that the same Eastern set-top-box players that read DivX also ignore restrictions...

You should get a Playstation 2. The "next" button on ours lets us skip through anything .

(Of course, you also have to get a PS2 remote, or else try to control it through your game controller, which is doable, but a little awkward...)

Whenever a DVD won't let me skip, go straight to menu or fast forward I usually stop the DVD and then press "menu". Most of the time it will take me directly to the menu screen and I can by-pass all the mandatory previews.

Has about a 90% success rate, at least with all the DVDs I've bought.

Awesome guys, you heard my cries (that sounded a little too much like Wheelie). Thanks for the suggestions. I just tried opening the DVD with winDVD, stopping it completely, then selecting menu from the right-click bar. Works a charm, but didn't have the same luck with PowerDVD. What is the go with UK DVDs? Any 'mandatory' stuff at the beginning?

Re: the PS2, I'm thinking to buy a PS3 sometime soon because they are nearly $400 cheaper here than the PAL territories, but that raises another problem. The games are all fine but the DVDs follow the same region coding as before. Not so much of a problem until I try to play my old DVDs or ones I've bought from around the world. I would like to know however, what the region coding groups are for Blu Ray discs. I heard they were grouping Japan and US and A together, among other craziness. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks again!!

Worst we'll get is a "this disc is protected by copy protection blah blah blah" screen, which you just have to sit through. Most of the anti piracy skits can either be FFed through or Menued out of... same goes for any trailers.

I get more annoyed by the menu screens which take about two minutes to load because they're going through stupid fancy cgi or spoilery montage sequences. Hence I have a habit to go off and make a cuppa whilst a disc is loading. Which is the point where I normally return to find it's still stuck on the "select language" prompt that crops up before anything else can proceed.

Yay.

And how annoying is the company that insists on lisiting the countries alphabetically and thus you have to skip through 12 pages to get to United Kingdom? bah.
