RID didn't have a spaceplane mode in pretty much the exact same layout or general transformation pattern.
The purplish highlights on the toy are a nod to the Galvatron/Energon Megatron heritage, I reckon.

Aside from G1 influences, some the TFs have been designed with their Energon counterparts in mind.
Considering the time of the design inception, it co´ncides pretty much with the timeframe of Energon being the main line.

Arcee - inspired by E Arcee
Bumblebee - inspired by Hot Shot
Ironhide - inspired by E Ironhide.

Megatron - Energon Megatron
