looked over the link, Denyer and all I can say is uhg...can't people just understand the intent of a wiki? It's there for everyone to put two cents in and the truth may filter out.

Geeze... it's just an interweb and Geeze they are just toys...

...oh and I'm no longer looking for the real killer...

Come on and wind me up.

Just a question: there's that TF:Fanon section that supposedly includes a number of fan-fictions which are ... where?

Is there a page somewhere with links to the actual stories they mention?

Yes, but links to the stories they mention would be nice.

The one about Arbitrary Autobots and Consumericons seemed like it would be funny.

Isn't fannon when theories and ideas invented by fans that become so commonplace every winds up accepting them to the point they often show up in "official" fiction (Seekers, Darkside, mass shifting ect)? I've never heard of either of those examples.

"No" would have saved time.

Fanon isn't based on any fanfics - it's widely accepted (or at least postulated) stuff that isn't featured in anything official. This happens either because it's a good explanation for some continuity error, for convenience (e.g. the idea that the Decepticon jets are called Seekers) or simply because lots of people started thinking in the same way (e.g. "Dion must be turned into someone, surely?" No.). Most TF fanon, I believe, came from the early days of ATT. Interestingly, it nearly all relates to the G1 cartoon.

A lot of Ye Olde Fanon has been legitimised since nerds started getting jobs with various licencees - Prime and Magnus being brothers was finally put in a official comic by Dreamwave, I believe the name 'Seekers' has been used in a comic now and so on.

[nitpick]Even though the name originally started out as a sorta-official term of a very VERY obscure origin and was later propagated via repeated fan usage.[/nitpick]

Ad copy by a third party counts as official?

Assumption is that a lowly copywriter is rather unlikely to come up with such an obscue word on his own AND decide to randomly capitalize it, so the name might be coming from Hasbro somehow.

Well, it was an official ad, though weren't they called the Decepticon 'Hunter-Seekers' in it (referring to Starscream, Thundercraker, and Skywarp)? I'm going off memory here, and it's been a long, long time, though.

How can something by a third party really be considered official? Are all the numerous things JC Penney catalogues get wrong also official?

It wasn't the only source, but I honestly can't remember all the details from that far back. I think that it appeared in a couple of other ads at the time, and that it probably originally appeared in Hasbro's solicitations to retailers for that year. (Most of the 'copy' ads that you see are based on those solicitations).

Now, the first time I was really introduced to the term was when I was first an ATT member, and that was back to right after it was created. The 'seeker' term came from the original mailing list, and migrated along with it, so it was kind of 'enshrined' into the fanon already by the time the internet fandom came along. Granted, there was a lot outright WRONG in that period too.

So, it's possible that someone (and I want to say Raksha, in this case), who really liked the term on the mailling list (after having seen it in the catalog, and used it in he fanfic for years), got it going when the list turned into ATT, and just kinda kept going after that.
