I remember a lot of people not realizing this and throwing the packaging away.
Yep, it's Hasbro's way of punishing the people who throw boxes away. Packrats rule!

For Dark Crumplezone, pretty much every single piece was resculpted (and, yes, the fins were added). It's definately the most radical retool that Takara/Hasbro had ever done.

Ramjet (who gets new wings and a new noggin) was tame by comparison.

Unless you count K-9.

Then there's the retool of that, Max B. from one of the Japanese Beast Wars lines.

Well, Max B doesn't seem nearly as much of a retool of K-9 as K-9 is of Wolfang.

Is K-9 actually a retool at all, ot is he an entirely new mold based on the same general structure?

I'd consider K-9 to be a retool of Wolfang, as it's about the same robot with a new shell. But what do I know?

K-9 was close, but the legs and arms were the same, etc. Dark Crumplezone goes even to that length. The MaxB and other 'cyber-beast' guys, though, probably come close to beating Dark Crumplezone, if they don't outright. I forgot completely about them.

(K-9 is a retool, though... )

The robot parts are the same, aside from the chest. All/most of the animal parts are changed, though. The 'core' is otherwise unaltered, if you will.

Not really, no. They look different, but they have far fewer pieces changed/swapped than Wolfang --> K-9.

Actually, now that I'm home and can look at them, I recant the above. The rear animal legs seem to be genuinely resculpted (the fur pattern is the same, but the mechanical details are different). Aside from that half-change, the animal sides (mounted on the pins) are unchanged, as are the upper arms. The shoulder ball / socket joints, the hip ball / socket joints, and the animal head ball /socket joints are unchanged, as is the robot head minus the mutant mask.

Aside from the above, every piece is a new sculpt.

EDIT: After digging up the Crumplezones, they're not quite so different. Without going over them piece-by-piece without a camera to document them, I'd say a quarter to a third of the pieces are new. That's no so much compared to Wolfang/K9, but still far more than a typical remolded toy.

It's been awhile since I had Wolfang and K-9, but I really didn't think the robot parts were too different. I remember the torso being slightly modified, though.

Ah well, I'm old and senile anyway.

Well, I already have the original Crumplezone. Bought him in late 2007 (that's a long time spent shelfwarming) so he's pass.

Here's a photo of a loose Crumplezone presumable intended for the pack:

Details from Hasbro's website:
http://www.hasbro.com/transformers/d...C59B3BC7A0265A

The Costco exclusive Optimus Prime Prime/Crumplezone two-pack is due out in November and will retail for $36.99.

In other news, the annoying redirect on Hasbro's website has FINALLY been de-annoyed, at least for the time being. Clicking the link once will redirect you, clicking it for a second time will send you to the news.

Cool, I've always wanted the Galaxy Force Prime. This looks like a good Christmas present for me.

Maybe I'll kitbash the Prime into Thunder Clash.
